Our Flying field FLOODED ! Got floaties ?
« on: February 05, 2011, 01:49:51 AM »
As some of you may have heard on the News Australia - Specifically QLD Got hit with a terrible Cyclone that has lasted many days and has brought with it devistation rain, flooding and severe tropical storms.

I dont live in Queensland I live atleast 2,000 MILES from where the storm broke Land. Several days later even way down here we are getting the side wall of the Cyclone at its brought with it massive falls of rain and Flash flooding everywhere. We are all safe - and people living in queensland are also safe by all accounts. However my poor little 4 circle Local flying field has taken a beating. I went down today to have a look..

I would have retrofitted Seaplane floaties on my stunt ship - but I couldnt even open the gate to get in.. VERY high indeed..

Your all complaining about snow.. this is our SUMMER ! LL~

Cyclone YASI was a Category 5 Storm front which was very close to Hurricane Katrina.

I thought this was a fantasic photo to give all my friends in America an idea of the size and scale of this Monster - On our local website someone had superimposed Cyclone Yasi - OVER a map of USA.

My lovely field in the middle of summer Lovely green grass.

How it looked from a similar position Today..

Our Modest Club House. - Note where the wood is.

As seen Today :

More various photos of the flooding at my field :

And along the bike path near the field :

Sorry to see that Pj, some interesting photos tho' hope it dries out soon enough for all the folks in Australia. I was hoping with 'global warming' we were all gonna have long hot dry summers, well it ain't happening in England either.. Phil

Sorry to see that PJ. Your turn for rain and our turn for snow. The ground has been white since late November.

Cold or wet... Least I can stay OFF the Field..

There is no Single way ever in Hell - you would get me out flying in that ICE Park. I had to have a shower just to warm up after seeing that.

Its ok Guys - no need to apologize this isnt the first time that field has Flooded.

Now on the map of our USA, if you had started with a line from the southern most part of New Mexico and Texas, then draw it up thru the eastern edge of Montana, that would be where the storm here in the states started.  every thing thing except maybe the southeast got hit with the snow and ice.  I have an E-Mail of some of the pictures of areas of the storm.  Here in KANSAS I have scooped 12 inches of snow twice off the drive way.  Nothing like blowing snow and the city snow plows.  Anyway I know Australia will get dried out in time.  Thanks for the pictures. How's this?

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Control line steam speed boats:

I saw this one a few years ago, highly awesome. I have plans for a flash steam boiler and engine, but I never got around to trying it.

It's hard to imagine steam power producing such velocity in a model boat, but I suppose gears and/or prop selection will make all that pressure into whatever driving force you need.

Brett, do your plans show and gearbox or is it direct drive? Are we talking cylinder/piston or turbine or what?

Maybe PJ can get some use out of the KMAC field yet!

It's a single-cylinder reciprocating engine, double-acting, with slide valves, direct drive. It may or may not be the same sort of design used by the model in the video (it's in a book from the 20's). The tricky part seems to be the flash steam boiler and heat source (regeneratively-heated blowtorch), not so much the motor or drive. I don't even see how the boiler works,  but I haven't spent a lot of time studying it. I also can't see how they manage to get it to run for any length of time without catching the boat on fire.

Geoff I posted a pic from Vic stunt a few posts earlier.

Im interested to know why Brett thinks that steam power is now the way to go.......... Sheesh IC down to Electrics down to Steam... - How does one run Nitro? S?P

Do people look at Stunt flying the same way I look at Teathered boating?? - Why would u bother doing that..... ( So damp and wet ! )

The owner of my local hobby shop can't imagine why one would actually enjoy flying an airplane on "strings".

We have a very prominent and vocal hobby store owner here proclaiming that it's a waste of National aeromodelling money to continue "propping up" control line flying! And of his crowd, not one showed up to the nationals... I hope his local field gets flooded!

Does look a bit wet PJ!!   Don't need that much rain up here but a bit would be good!   I'm over these 40+ deg C days.  Good to see you sent a southerly up to us late today!  Quite nice in the shed tonight.

Ash.   Don't worry about the loser shop owner if he thinks that way.  Same here in OZ with that mentality.    Actually about 90% of radio members hate the national body and can't see why they have to pay any fees but it is also that group who make most if not all claims on insurance through stupidity.   The NSW R/C mob don't even want the combined Nats anymore and even suggest only having a Nats each two years.   Even then they only want to have a "fly in".   Just remind him that anyone can fly R/C but it takes skill to fly control line!!

A couple of brothers here in the KC area tried to run a hobby shop after their Dad left this world.   Their Dad was a big time RC modeler who catered to us control line guys in competition.  The brothers were flying control line and said something about it was more fun.  Also they said they had less problems with the control line people.  I bought a couple of Brodak kits from them as well as dope until they said they couldn't afford the rent the shopping center wanted.  Hope to see them again this summer after I get a permit for the new circle site. Went to the field today

The water has receeded but its unflyable until its cleaned - looks like a tip. So much debris and rubbish.

Things I saw on the field :

4 Car tyres
Dozens of tennis balls
Plastic Bottles
A Writing desk
2 chairs
Part of a toilet seat
Kids toys

and LOTS OF tree trunks..

Solid 2 weeks of council cleanup
