Yep, we only made it about 230 of our 950 mile drive before the right front bearing/hub assembly
on the Suburban crapped out. We were rolling along almost to Salem, IL, Doug driving and me napping
when the ABS light came on. Doug asked me about it, what it might mean, I said "That jus means I
gotta spend more f-ing money". About 30 minutes later the truck started pulling a little to the right and
making odd noises. The next thing we know we can hear parts coming out the bottom of the truck,
bouncing off the road, and hitting the bottom of the truck. Hard on the brakes and pull off the road!
Originally, we thought maybe the brake pads had disintegrated, but after investigating determined
the bearing had let go. Fortunately an IL state trooper pulled up about ten or fifteen minutes later
and called a wrecker for us. He took us about seven miles up the road to Salem and the local O'rielly
Auto Parts shop. We put the truck in the parking lot under a shade tree, bought the part, borrowed
some tools and fixed it right there in a little over an hour. The guys at O'rielly were really cool about
helping us out. With a stop at Subway on the way out our total delay was three hours and fifteen
minutes.
I guess it had to happen sooner or later. This was Nats trip number seventeen to Muncie, and our
first breakdown.
