LA-25 and Speed at the 2017 Brodak
« on: October 01, 2016, 01:58:09 PM »
LA-25 Sport Racing at the 2017 Brodak Fly In
also speed changes

We ran the 100-Miler as a one-time demo and ended up running it twice with three entries per year.  I have decided to retire the event and proclaim the Barnes family permanent champions for life with their record-shattering 1:22, which bettered the Toronto record by 6 minutes.
In its place I am proposing a standard 5 and 10 mile sport race like the very competitive race we had at Brad’s this summer.  Everybody ran two 5-mile races and finished every race.  When all was said and done, the times ranged from 4:30 to 4:36 (minutes not hours).   So I am proposing to run that event at The 2017 Brodak Fly In.  We have plenty of equipment among us.  There are always spare pilots and mechanics to be hired.
If we hustle a five mile heat takes five minutes to fly and five to set up.  Even at a slow pace we can run six races in one to one and a half hours.  That would leave 30 minutes for the 10-mile final and thus still only use the circle for two hours.  But we would have the capacity for NINE, not just three teams.   As with Foxberg and Clown, we will allow a person to enter only once, but to assist two other teams.
If the whole gang goes to Carmichaels we could possibly have Brad, myself, Leonard, Mark, Peter, Keith, Doug, and Chris, that’s eight just from here.  Add on Whitney & Hallas, Charles & Chuck Barnes and Charlie Johnson, plus one traveler.  For the shorter race we could bring in Banjock, Palko and maybe Shafer & Ferraro.   It’s not a perfect world, but getting 9 or even 12 of the above is within reason.
On the subject of the 2017 Brodak, I have decided to phase out Clown Speed and add a Sportsman Stock Stunt Engine Speed event.  In the Clown Speed there were only three entries in addition to the three I sponsored.  But in Fox 35 Stunt Speed there were five stock entries who got slaughtered by the four all speed engines. .  There’s no change to Fox 35 Speed, just a relief event for those who don’t build engines.  And it’s an either/or deal to keep the engine builder clear of the stock event.  Also, the Stock class will go a half-mile from a flying start.  This will eliminate the need to build a light plane and give the stock flyers a more respectable score and fair chance at the average.
Perky is alive and better than ever with high entries and higher speeds every year.  No change to Perky.
The Closest to Average prize will continue and span Perky, Fox 35 and Stock Stunt Speed.

Is everybody running stock have a profile plane because, that would be a good rule. You want to keep the engine builder out of it, what about the high zoot plane builders. Oh wait, am I allowed to talk about this?

Everything is open for discussion.

But it's a one way street from stock to all-out and some people have gone down that street.

when the fox stunts have all blown up, the LA .25 is about as fast as a good Fox stunt and stronger. It might make a good cross over event. if there will be additional Brodak events.

No.  I have disallowed all Supertigre and Johnson engines and all Foxes other than the 35 Stunt.  Also all OS's beyond the Max III.

The plane needs to have a built up foam airfoil wing and be able to a least do lazy eight or reverse wingover.

If you want to mess with the limits, just fly the Expert class and use a Regal Raider with a Nelson inside a Fox case.

Note, this is 7 laps from a flying start, so you don't need an ultra-light plane that won't sag off on the first lap.  Also, once in the air, you can do several timed runs on the same flight.

As I recall, the OK list is Enya, Fuji, Fox 35 Stunt, K&B, McCoy, OS Max III and earlier, Veco, and Webra.  I'm sure there are enough of these around to get up a nice field.

Of course it's suction fuel feed.

There is no pylon and you may not whip.

We've done speed at The Brodak without a pylon for several years.

As was pointed out to me years ago as an event director there is such thing as whipping if you hold your hand on the center line of your chest.  Arm out stretched and pulling is whipping.  Other wise it is known as leading the airplane.   S?P

Wasted words never been heard (Alm bros). There are 3 points that matter, the center of the circle, the handle and the airplane. If the 3 points are in alignment and form a straight line, you are flying with the plane. If the handle is ahead of that straight line (ahead of the center and the plane) you are whipping. If the handle is behind the center and the plane you are blocking. I have found very few people that understand this simple geometry. Most fly in the blocking way because you learn to fly by yourself and pivot in the center with your arm in front of you. When you fly in a group you have to re-learn to walk the circle with your arm to the right and most stop learning by then and become creatures of habit. If you make a few simple drawings it is easy to understand. I wrote an article about it for Torque Roll magazine. My article was slightly re-written and published under a different name.

Maybe I'll start up a dedicated whipping event next year.

Fly 7 laps holding back.
Fly 7 laps whipping your best.
The score is the difference.

I think the score will be very low.

I don't know how we got on this theme, but in the world of no-kill combat, foam wings have hardwood strips to prevent this.

When we built our own planes, foam was a quick way to make throwaway planes.

Don't worry about the Sportsman rules.  You fly with the big kids.
Questioning the rules is an automatic upgrade to Expert.
