I've got a book the size of a cinder block, called 'A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English' by Eric Partridge. Its definition of 'dead stick' is as follows: 'dead stick is applied to the controls of an engine that has stopped: RAF since ca.1925.' Make of that what you will! Why would they call it a "dead stick" when the stick becomes easier to move and it is not the stick that is dead? Unless of course you lost hydraulics, but then you would probably have a "bad yoke".
You’re welcome!
