Holders for spraying plane parts
« on: September 13, 2010, 05:20:48 PM »
On my latest project I decided to do some prefinishing of components before final assembly.   I would eventually need some holders for flaps and stab/elevator so I decided to make them now so I could also use them during this prefinish which is mostly done with brush. I used some plastic sheet stock which is same thickness as the hinges, and cut some strips a little less than hinge width to fit in the slots. Put the flaps and stab/elev. back to back on the strips and then screwed two sticks together clamping the plastic strips. Made a set of holders (like a rotissere) from some scrap 3/8 ply and a piece of 3/4 particle board for base. The sticks are sized (3/8 x 3/4) so when screwed together they pretty much form a square. Cut some diamond shaped slots in the end supports so that the parts are held at a 45° to the base, which is perfect for spraying. They are easy enough to rotate from one side to the next, can do that with free hand and not have to put spray gun down. Shoot one side, flip them over, shoot 2nd side. And if I happen to load up a little heavy on the paint, I can still put them horizontal so the heavy coat can flow out and level instead of running.

Well, that's completely carried away. I usually make some up from balsa and plywood scraps. They work well once you know the tricks, but this is way to swank for me.

Pretty snazzy, but it looks way too much like you know what you're doing. :##
