Hi Steve,

Thanks for those pictures!

The bottom one, white and blue trim USA-1, is Billy's FIRST one!  And it is before he cut the big scallop in the rudder/fin.  That picture verifies the USA-1 as pre 1970.  And Billy told me years ago that he cut the rear end before '69 was over, and had a *dated* picture to prove it.

One of them looks very *Kostecky"ish"*  (MACHS NA)

I took slides of this model Of Bill's model...that shows that that white finish has the most interesting "screen like silver mesh lace" airbrushed paint pattern on that wing of his that was sooooooooooo artistically clever.
I took a close up slide photo of the wing that showed the detail...
Although Bill flew that Big Red Aries thingeee' in 68------I could swear it was at Olatha 68 nats that I took those slides????
Beautiful beautiful paint job...soooooooooo tasteeeeee'!!! #^ y1 H^^ H^^

Thanks for posting these STEVE...UHHH KEEP THOSE OLD COLLECTOR PHOTOS COMIN'

My pleasure.....if my cheapo' H PeePee scanner will be good enough...otherwise I may have to take um down to my camera shop. H^^

U ASKED FOR IT BILL....
I dug that old TRASHED EPSON OUT OF THE DUMPSTER...sorry for the crappolddo' scan jobs but perhaps if we look carefully....you can see the beautiful laced-airbrushed silver hatching that Bill so artfully created on this beautiful USA-1.
(Wonder what kind of scanner or process was used on the above posts? WOW! OUTSTANDING PRINTS FROM SLIDES...

"Machs Na" is Big Art's 1969 NATs plane.  Around 620 squares, McCoy 40 power, bicycle landing gear with wing tip outriggers.  I think I have a couple other pix somewhere...

As far as a home scanner I have a Dell. To take the slides to CD I went to Cord Camera in Plainfield, Indiana. They do a very good job.Sparky has a copy of the CD,maybe some way to make them available ? Proceeds to Stunthangar.com. My father took these slides originally, I'm sure he would be OK with that. He always said that C/L was by far the friendliest hobby he had ever been involved with. His stepfather wasn't a flier, but always made sure he had a way to and from practicing or a contests. Many C/l fliers of years past helped him, so I'm sure he would be fine with the use of these photos.
Ok, enough talking on with the photos.

"Machs Na translates to "try & copy this" or Imitate this.  The words were inscribed on a cathedral in Switzerland by the architect.

Founds some more pix.  It was difficult to get a good picture of it - Dad used pearl in all the colors and it always seemed to glare and burn out the pix.

1st pix is a 3/4 shot that shows the cheek cowls that enclosed the McCoy 40.  Incidently the canopy (wrapped celluloid) was tinted black not painted.

2nd pix is from an polaroid, it has darkened so I tried touching it up. Anywho its a reasonable plan view shot.

Whenever we show off a pix of Dad from back then, we say this is "Big Art" when he was still "Medium Art".  This pix came from Wynn Paul and shows the curvaceous fuselage (guess why we called it the Banana or the Guppy!) and the tandem landing gear with wing tip skids.  The landing gear were each dual wheel bogeys on spring loaded shock absorbing gear.

Last pix is another one from Wynn, taken at the '69 NATs.  This one shows Dad with the Machs Na and LeRoy Guenther with his Galaxy - ANOTHER bird that soon to be documented!

Shultzie,
These are for you.
WOW STEVE....
THANKS..THAT BRINGS BACK THE WEIRDEST MEMORIES....for example:
Note the missing nose wheel pant on my Sting Ray and the hassles it  caused when one of our fellow competitors filed a complaint that my first flight should have been disqualifed due to the fact that the wheel pant that was blown apart of my first qualifying flight...pieces of it kept falling off during the flight.
Perhaps I should have not given the signal to the Navy judges...but my take off was really an exceptional one..plus my two level laps were on rails...I had good morning air and didn't want to waste flight time (due to the heavy upcoming schedule) and why make every one wait...so I gave the signal and put in a good decent first flight.
Later on in the afternoon....THE WIND CAME UP....and along with it...scores started to go down and then this one individual, put in a protest?
Why??? Hummm? In the end...it really didn't matter. However after much discussion the contest director convinced this gent that his protest would be IN VAIN, since neither his or my 2nd flight in that high afternoon wind would never be good enough to out fly any of top qualifiers anyhoooooo?
Sorry for the rant...
That photo of the Sting Ray must have been taken just after I borrowed a locking wheel collar from BIG ART...and used his brand new little screwdriver...that I had forgotten to return to him.
I didn't  know that I had STOLEN it until I got back from the nats..
I called ART and made my confessions....
Come to think about it......I STILL HAVE THAT NICE LITTLE SCREW DRIVER IN MY OLD NATS FLIGHT BOX!  LL~ LL~ LL~

Thanks for the memories...STEVE! H^^ H^^ They are so precious to all us old UKIESTUNTGRUNTFARTS...
WOW! THOSE SCANS OF YOURS ARE OF SUCH HIGH QUALITY...KEEP THEM COMING!
AHHH! Those were the days my friend....(that reminds me of a song!! Opps! never mind LL~ LL~

Roger that Blue Jet - the AMA number confirms the ID!  I seem to recall that it had a rib about every 1/2" and the metallic blue just sparkled.  Of all the airplanes Jack published - why not this one???   ???  Donaldo, I THINK that it was at the '69 NATs - like the other 3 Steve K posted.

I will risk swelling Schultzie's head by publicly stating that his Sting Rays were on a SHORT list of my favorite birds ever - with or without wheel pant!  8)  CLP**  H^^

BTW the white bird with orange & black trim is on a list that Wynn Paul has not been able to identify... Anyone out there know?

In 69 if my demented dumolddo mind serves me.....BOTH HE AND LEW McFARLAND FLEW SEMI SCALE MODELS??? Lew's Acromasta' and Jack had that beautiful little FLY BABY?
(its been sooooooooooo damned long ago although it was either 68 or 69 either way?
I'll dig out that old slide which has the date on the slide frame...
I couldn't find the one with Jack holding this beautiful Fly Baby...but here is the scan of both Lew Mc and Jack's planes on the tarmac. I thought this was 69?

His did NOT have PINK canopies!   8)

WAY TO GO STEVE!!!

I set a little goal for myself to document the DEEEtroit area stunters from the Classic era that I was familiar with: Leroy "Gunny" Gunther. was like another member of the family.  He used to spend a lot of time at our house building - and he built a bunch!

Here's another one of Gunny's bird - actually pre-dates the Galaxy by a year.  The United-7 started out as a plans built bird (see if you can guess, the wing and stab are stock) but then he changed the top block, cowl, fin and several other things - in short he "united" features from 7 airplanes - but for the life of me I do not remeber which 7!

I'm afraid we lost Gunny about ten years ago.  He was in pretty poor health at the end too.

Gunny stop flying Stunt around 1972.  He got into trains: N gauge then HO-Narrow gauge and built some phenomenal rolling stock and layout pieces.  He dabbled at building some Giant scale RC but I don't think his heart was really in it.

My Dad has Gunny's Testors Best Finish Spitfire (1970) and Nobler (1971).  The Nobler was built with a Typhoon wing, and a OS 35S.  It weighed about 40 oz, and won the Testor's award.  I also don't think it was flown 2-dozen times...

He built a LOT of airplanes that would be great draws in Classic: the Spitfire, the 46-size Talon, a Miss Cosmic Wind (my design!) the Galaxy and the United-7 to name a few...
