Our club is a mix of RC and CL....here's what was sent to me..................
read the regs. It's clear: a) a u/c model is not a kite, e.g. an airborne device powered only by the wind; and b) u/c is within the definition of model aircraft because it is controlled from the ground, with no on board pilot, within the line of sight of the operator. So if you fly within 5 miles of an airport, you should notify them. Why the AMA is so brave as to tell its members to fly in violation of FAA regs I leave to you. Seems foolish to me.
It is clear that, unless something from the FAA comes down about CL, that flying without registering with the FAA is putting the flying club, the site owner and the flier in jeopardy. I don't know why so many are afraid of registering....since the Patriot Act, the Feds know more about me than I do.....plus, I don't give a rat's a** what they know about me...
