People who put an apostrophe in a word when adding S.  Instead of making the word plural, as they intend, they make it singular possessive.  It absolutely drives me crazy and I often wonder how this wide spread practice ever got started.

The apostrophe has two functions; to indicate possession or to take the place of another letter.  It doesn't make something plural! HB~>

Sorry for the rant, but you asked. S?P

I with Bill on this. I hate to pull up to a red light and have my windows rattle from the cRAP coming out of the car next to me. If someone would invent something that would allow me to flip a switch in my car and emit white noise over there speakers I would buy it!

Only 600 watts? Until I removed the system recently (Waiting to put in something new) I was running 3000 watts to a MA Audio core 2500 Watt 15 inch sub. I could hit 157db on SPL (sound pressure level) Took my fair share of 1st place tophies with that setup. I pretty much toasted anyone who pulled up and wanted to do DB Drag racing.  :X %^@ ;D ;D

You don't mean you'd turn down a free hot dog do ya??

OK, for real: Two things; the sign at a grocery check-out that says "10 items or less". In correct English that should be "fewer". And 2nd, the term "1st Annual . . .". Sorry, no such thing. It's only "annual" when it occurs the second time a year later; should be "inaugural . . .".

And please, come get your FREE hot dog!! If you don't, I might be forced to let Steve Helmick have it.

You pull up behind someone at traffic lights (On red) in the lane where you can either go straight on or turn across the the oncoming traffic. The lights turn green and they then decide to put their traffic indicator on.   HB~>

people who misuse the words "there", "their" and "they're".

The first indicates a place, the second is possessive, and the third is the contraction for "they are", these seem to be the most misunderstood and misused words on every forum I get on.

Now what do I do?  I am guilty of all the proceding.  Just today I had to go get the girls at Church Camp.  People on my bumper and I am over the speed limit.   Then someone else passes me, pulls in front and slows down.  Told Grandaughter my next truck is going to have a real heavy push bumper.  Once in a while I do signal a lane change, may also get an extra heavy rear bumper so I can slam on the brakes when they get too close.   VD~

Two things on these forums.

1.  Someone who is responding to a serious question with a reply that he thinks he remembers something published on the subject in some magazine sometime.

2.  Those who ask if it is important where to place the bellcrank then refuse along with others to understand that it does not make any difference where the bellcrank goes except for reasons of structure or reasonable design sense or to minimize leadout wire flexing at the leadout guides.  Then, there are those who seem to delight in always bringing up this subject.

True, but it is going to get worse.  Already, there is a movement to abandon all conventional structure in the English language and just spell it like it sounds.  We can thank all the whiz-bang devices people use today to send messages and converse electronically while only using as many letters or abbreviations to get the point across.  Young people are being brought up lazy and with a device in their hands.  The art of letter writing and cursive are almost things of the past.  I have heard that cursive isn't even being taught any more.  Those of us who were trained to "wind-up" the slanted "O" practicing the Palmer Method are a dying breed.  It is a shame that so much of our heritage has been lost in the name of progress.

Today's kids don't know how to entertain themselves without batteries and buttons.  What a shame.

Pet peeves? We all have them.

1. Pepper shakers that don't work.

2. The phrase "Drive careful now!"

3. Animals that don't mind.

4. People that slam car doors.

5. Best of all.  People that ask you a question that you actually know the answer to and
then proceed to let you know that the answer is not correct. I never speak to them again.

My Pet Peeve is this. You go out for a nice dinner and when you pay the bill with cash the waiter or waitress comes right out and asks you if you want your change. Heck yes I want the change. That is so rude.  Why don't they just start asking people to please give them a tip. Well when they ask me if I want the change I always tell them Yes I do, and you just blew your tip for being so rude.

TV commercials? Don't get me started on TV commercials.

1. Mercedes commercial about how their car warned the drivers they were falling asleep, yaking on their cell phone, not paying attention. Just makes the well heeled look like a bunch of irresponsible, inept and dangerous drivers. But hey, their $60,000 car will save them. I ask "well what about the rest of us"
2. Subaru Commercial where a guy steals the gear shift knob out of his totaled car already in the salvage yard lot, which only happens after the insurance co. totals out the vehicle and pays your claim. Some how this theft is somehow supposed to be cool.
3. Subaru commercial that romanticises leaving you junk car on the side of a pretty country road so others can scavenge parts off of it. And how is polluting the countryside supposed to be desireable?
4. That really annoying woman on the progressive car insurance ad.
5. The totally over played Geico Lizard
6. The Cadillac AD that touts 190mph windshield wipers....... like anywhere in the USA you can drive 190 mph , and in the rain no less. What were they thinking?
7. If I see that Slap & Chop Ad again I think I'll loose my mind
8. Scheduling TV commercials to coincide and overlap between stations. You can change channels and go from commercial to commercial to commercial for a half hour straight.
9. Publishing houses that put different covers on the same book, so you drop $12 bucks getting a new novel only to find after getting a dozen pages in you've already read it.
10. Any object that begins with "I".
Words Spoken by the first human to set foot on Mars... "Now What?"

Peter,

I suppose that stuff isn't a pet peeve to me since I don't watch much television and just ignore most annoying stuff.

I have a peeve and it really ticks me off! I am paying for cable TV. I get ( and I timed it) 4 min of programing and 5 Min of commercials. ever 4 or 5 min. Now to top it off they are flasing a banned at the bottom between commercials during the show. When is enough -enough? I pay for TV there should not be any commercials and I do remember when that was so. F-N Greed!
