People who put an apostrophe in a word when adding S.  Instead of making the word plural, as they intend, they make it singular possessive.  It absolutely drives me crazy and I often wonder how this wide spread practice ever got started.

The apostrophe has two functions; to indicate possession or to take the place of another letter.  It doesn't make something plural! HB~>

Sorry for the rant, but you asked. S?P

I with Bill on this. I hate to pull up to a red light and have my windows rattle from the cRAP coming out of the car next to me. If someone would invent something that would allow me to flip a switch in my car and emit white noise over there speakers I would buy it!

I had about 600watts in my pathfinder(it was in it when I got it). had a kid pull up next to me at a light, looked over at me and cranked it it up . Only 600 watts? Until I removed the system recently (Waiting to put in something new) I was running 3000 watts to a MA Audio core 2500 Watt 15 inch sub. I could hit 157db on SPL (sound pressure level) Took my fair share of 1st place tophies with that setup. I pretty much toasted anyone who pulled up and wanted to do DB Drag racing.  :X %^@ ;D ;D

You don't mean you'd turn down a free hot dog do ya??

OK, for real: Two things; the sign at a grocery check-out that says "10 items or less". In correct English that should be "fewer". And 2nd, the term "1st Annual . . .". Sorry, no such thing. It's only "annual" when it occurs the second time a year later; should be "inaugural . . .".

And please, come get your FREE hot dog!! If you don't, I might be forced to let Steve Helmick have it.

You pull up behind someone at traffic lights (On red) in the lane where you can either go straight on or turn across the the oncoming traffic. The lights turn green and they then decide to put their traffic indicator on.   HB~>

people who misuse the words "there", "their" and "they're".

The first indicates a place, the second is possessive, and the third is the contraction for "they are", these seem to be the most misunderstood and misused words on every forum I get on.

Now what do I do?  I am guilty of all the proceding.  Just today I had to go get the girls at Church Camp.  People on my bumper and I am over the speed limit.   Then someone else passes me, pulls in front and slows down.  Told Grandaughter my next truck is going to have a real heavy push bumper.  Once in a while I do signal a lane change, may also get an extra heavy rear bumper so I can slam on the brakes when they get too close.   VD~

Two things on these forums.

1.  Someone who is responding to a serious question with a reply that he thinks he remembers something published on the subject in some magazine sometime.

2.  Those who ask if it is important where to place the bellcrank then refuse along with others to understand that it does not make any difference where the bellcrank goes except for reasons of structure or reasonable design sense or to minimize leadout wire flexing at the leadout guides.  Then, there are those who seem to delight in always bringing up this subject.

It never ceases to amaze me just how many people are totally unable to spell.

True, but it is going to get worse.  Already, there is a movement to abandon all conventional structure in the English language and just spell it like it sounds.  We can thank all the whiz-bang devices people use today to send messages and converse electronically while only using as many letters or abbreviations to get the point across.  Young people are being brought up lazy and with a device in their hands.  The art of letter writing and cursive are almost things of the past.  I have heard that cursive isn't even being taught any more.  Those of us who were trained to "wind-up" the slanted "O" practicing the Palmer Method are a dying breed.  It is a shame that so much of our heritage has been lost in the name of progress.

Today's kids don't know how to entertain themselves without batteries and buttons.  What a shame.

Pet peeves? We all have them.

1. Pepper shakers that don't work.

2. The phrase "Drive careful now!"

3. Animals that don't mind.

4. People that slam car doors.

5. Best of all.  People that ask you a question that you actually know the answer to and
then proceed to let you know that the answer is not correct. I never speak to them again.

My Pet Peeve is this. You go out for a nice dinner and when you pay the bill with cash the waiter or waitress comes right out and asks you if you want your change. Heck yes I want the change. That is so rude.  Why don't they just start asking people to please give them a tip. Well when they ask me if I want the change I always tell them Yes I do, and you just blew your tip for being so rude.

TV commercials? Don't get me started on TV commercials.

1. Mercedes commercial about how their car warned the drivers they were falling asleep, yaking on their cell phone, not paying attention. Just makes the well heeled look like a bunch of irresponsible, inept and dangerous drivers. But hey, their $60,000 car will save them. I ask "well what about the rest of us"
2. Subaru Commercial where a guy steals the gear shift knob out of his totaled car already in the salvage yard lot, which only happens after the insurance co. totals out the vehicle and pays your claim. Some how this theft is somehow supposed to be cool.
3. Subaru commercial that romanticises leaving you junk car on the side of a pretty country road so others can scavenge parts off of it. And how is polluting the countryside supposed to be desireable?
4. That really annoying woman on the progressive car insurance ad.
5. The totally over played Geico Lizard
6. The Cadillac AD that touts 190mph windshield wipers....... like anywhere in the USA you can drive 190 mph , and in the rain no less. What were they thinking?
7. If I see that Slap & Chop Ad again I think I'll loose my mind
8. Scheduling TV commercials to coincide and overlap between stations. You can change channels and go from commercial to commercial to commercial for a half hour straight.
9. Publishing houses that put different covers on the same book, so you drop $12 bucks getting a new novel only to find after getting a dozen pages in you've already read it.
10. Any object that begins with "I".

How about "Artic", "Myself" as the subject of a sentence or synonym for "I" or "me" ('He and myself flew CL today'), and many sportscasters' penchant for saying things like "battle between he and ..."? I guess then that one of my "peeves" is media personalities fracturing the language so badly and often that kids have little chance of getting things right. Professionals...Hmfff!

On a non-peeve topic. My friend Mike, who did my machine (fabrication) and engine-rebuilding work for my karts always called that element "aluninum". If I wanted a job done quickly or wanted to build an experimental expansion chamber, I'd have to drive an hour and a half to New Springfield, and spend the day talking racing. So I heard a lot of "aluninums" each day. Finally, one afternoon, I finally slipped and said "aluninum." Mike didn't hesitate for even a second, before responding, "Ah, YOU say that word too!" I never knew that he even realized he was saying it. Unfortunately, Mike and those great days are gone. Fortunately we have the CL bunch again now.

Tailgaters!  They annoy me to know end, and I will intentionally slow down to p**s them off even more.  Also people who drive on the interstate at about 120mph and just go in and out of traffic not giving a rats a$$ about anybody else driving on the road at a much more reasonable speed (70mph).  Also there never seems to be a cop around to pull them over.

One word I hate, don't know why, but I do, is camcorder.  Another pet peeve of mine, actually this is probably more like an OCD tendency, but when I turn the volume up or down on the tv, it has to end on a 5 or 0.

ONe last pet peeve is when the commercial on TV is louder than the actual program!

Right you are, Matt, and that is one of my biggest issues with them too - that and setting the "background" music volume so high that it obscures the dialog for us older folks. 'seems to me that rather than pandering to those who love excess, we should be setting reasonable standards. Oh, well, I'm playing an indoor rock concert this weekend, where they've already decided to crank up the sound to ear-plug volume. My granddaughter will skip that one, because, believe it or not, she is sensitive to loud sounds at age 18. Wow...

Well Randly C., as I told the New Zealand Team in 04 when they let me have the pleasure of dining with them opening night at the Worlds.  I speak American.   Mainly what I learned in Missouri and Kansas plus traveling around this great big country of ours.  Especially when I was accused of having a southern accent by my brother-in-law from Minnesota. Well since you asked & since this IS suposed to be a control line forum.

- People who step on my lines in the pit area.
- Flyers who's friends/relatives/kids step on models / lines in the pit areas
- Parents who allow their kid to drive a bicycle over my wing (in the contest pit area) then leave, without saying a word.
- Abusive language contestants (often directed at the CD)
- Modellers who think fist fighting will help the CD see their point of view (REALLY!)
- Modellers who think the court system / lawyers is useful if they don't get their way
- Poor losers...(especially at low key local events)

People who put an apostrophe in a word when adding S.  Instead of making the word plural, as they intend, they make it singular possessive.  It absolutely drives me crazy and I often wonder how this wide spread practice ever got started.

The apostrophe has two functions; to indicate possession or to take the place of another letter.  It doesn't make something plural! HB~>

Sorry for the rant, but you asked. S?P

Dick,
I'll referer you to this site so you can figure oput who is using that little mark incorrectly. We are appointing you the apostrophe policeman on this forum.

All the rants about TV reminded me of another:

You rent a DVD movie,. and most, of not all the actors merely whisper, or deliver their lines with "mush-mouth" making it nearly impossible to understand.

So I always opt for English sub-titles.   Often, what I read has little resemblance to what the actors seem to be saying.

(John Wayne is the exception, of course!)

I have "intelligent" friends (that was nearly "fiends", till I reread this! LL~) One is an ex-teacher, and they feel we should help kids by allowing them to use text speak in exams and school work ??? WHAT! They think that writing down  a phrase like, "r u alright m8?" (are you alright mate?) should be acceptable, we are dumb enough in this country without going any further >:(

TV adds reveal where the big money is in my opinion. These are the ones that get me the most. Medicine, Diabetic stuff, motorized scooters, car insurance, lawyers that fight the government. OK we have a big problem with medicare! I believe that the medicare is so badly managed that they pay out millions and millions in duplicate or bad claims. TV commercials indicate to me that this is correct. These companies know this and just keep on pushing for more and more. How many of you see this to?

Sorry that you never cared for English.  Spell check allows more mistakes than it corrects.  It doesn't know the intended use of words like their, there or they're, two, to or too.  They are all correct words, so spell check won't find anything wrong with the use of any of them.  As far as getting over it... n1.

The "real purpose" of English classes was to keep people from sounding like complete idiots. I should have paid more attention myself!

OK, peeves. I have a bunch.
-The "press one for English" is a big one.
-TV commercials in general. I know they pay the bills, but I hate 'em.
-NASCAR=BORING. Everybody knows that drag racing is REAL racing. Long live the NHRA!
-Rain. Anyone that talked to me a the NWR knows how I feel about this one.
-Leather fillets. If it can be found in a cobbler shop, I don't need it on my plane.
-Tippy CA bottles. How hard could it be to put the stuff in a more stable bottle?
-Customers that call me 15 times a day to tell me they're hot. Leave me alone for Gods sake! I'll get there when I get there! Keeping me on the phone all day sure isn't going to speed things up.
-Crying babies. So annoying. It's amazing that my own three girls lived through infancy. Good thing their mother was around.
-NFL refs that call every little foul. Dammit, just let 'em play the game! And "clipping" should be legal.
-Anti-gun advocates. I could do a whole paragraph on this one. But I won't.
-Anti-BOM advocates. I could do a whole paragraph on this one. But I won't.
-Rappers. Learn how to read music, you morons!!
-People that have their face stuck in an i-phone 23 hrs a day.

I better quit here before it looks like I have some problem with the whole world. I'm actually a pretty easy going dude!

Clint, the word Rap has a silent C in front of it, when applied to "music" ;D I too, wasn't keen on English lessons 45 years ago, it's only now I wish I'd paid more attention! It is so nice when reading a novel or even an article on model finishing to have it flow, and not have to constantly re-read a paragraph or line because the author knew what they wanted to say, but can't  grammatically get the point across to the reader. That is why we were taught "proper" English, whether we liked it or not! It's so much easier now with spellchecks and the like, so why do I feel that standards are falling?
