Robert,

Where can I find the build pictures for the Ares.  I plan to build one sometime after retirement and would like to know how to get the spar together with the fuselage.
It seems that one must insert the spar into each fuselage side and add the spar cap
pieces later.  Doing it that way would seem to make it a good idea to have the bellcrank and leadouts mounted in the spar before sliding the fuse sides on.  Yeah, I know get Bob
Hunt's video that shows Billy building one of his masterpieces.  I would still like to know where the Ares build pictures on you site are though...Pretty Please???

Robert,

One quick question here that is just knawing at my bones..... If you build the Spar for an I beamer first with the cap attached........Ahh...how do you get it into the fuselage since the tip and roots are of different heights??  You couldn't slide it into the slot with the cap already attached.  That one question just keeps me awake at night!!!!!

Hi Jim,

I don't know about Sparky, but I always (along with Mr. Werwage) have the spar completed before putting it in the fuselage.  Never had a problem and I've built a *few* I-Beamers.  Check the video..........

Yes, Jim, there IS magic at work..........

you must chant I-Beam 8 times while holding a decapitated chicken over a pit bull's mouth  with out him getting to it.................
Actually, the "slot" in the fuselage side will end up 1/2" wide all the way the height of the spar since the 1/16th ply doublers and triplers all added up will equal the width of the caps (1/2") in the center.  Think about it..............

For the mathmatically challenged:  1/4" spar + 1/16th" doubler X 2 (1/8th")  + 1/16th" center tripler X 2 (1/8th"):  1/4" + 1/8th" + 1/8th" = 1/2"  The spar caps are 1/8th" X 1/2"

When I built my first Juno back in 1985 I used a 3/8 spar with no caps as Billy did. From that point on I did all I/Beams that way. I started laminating two pieces of 3/16 together and only using one layer of 1/16 ply in the center out to the first rib.Much stronger than a stock I/Beam and lighter. I stopped mounting the gear on the spar as there was no plywood there and mounted it on plywood plates that go from the leading edge to the spar.Be sure to put lightening holes in the plate. This is the way the "new" USA/1 shows it.The gear is much stronger this way and it will never get loose with age. This method doesn't require sanding the caps to get the ribs to fit as there is no cap.
