On the scene report-2019 Nats
« on: July 10, 2019, 04:00:40 PM »
Reporting from the LPad as the typical afternoon thunderstorm approaches.  The main road down here was blocked- don’t know why but clandestined my around the back way in.  The grass circles are dry and freshly mowed today- ready to go.  I understand the new wooden centers are a work in progress and may still have sticky paint on them when you fly.  The NFFS trailer is in place (with a nifty set of stairs).  Some of the old duct tape to patch the cracks from last year is still evident.  NO CORN.  Just weeds off 3 and 4.  All for now.

If you're coming to Muncie, you might want to be careful and not walk off the paved surfaces. It is so wet that you may never find your way back!  :( :(

Allen Goff told me this morning he got four inches of rain in that storm yesterday in about 45minites!  I just took a walk down through the grass circles.  Only the carrier circle has any standing water.  The others  are soft but should be fine for the weekend unless we another one of those.  Some of the combat guys are out tuning them up.

The circles themselves usually aren't an issue, they are elevated and drain - down to the parking areas. That usually turns into a mudhole in short order, particularly between the road to the TR circle and that corner.

Yes it might be wise to leave the heavier vehicles on drier ground or gravel and just walk it in.    One of the combat guys has a huge motor home.  He was parked over on the gravel parking lot and just flying in the grass over there near the road.  That thing would have required an 18 wheeler tow truck to pull it out.

They were/are mowing the grass circles again now.  I think it's just the getting to them that will be challenging.  Might check into using golf carts if they can find a solid path in to carry stuff and folks back and forth.  The combat guys seem to have gotten in on that end.

We left Harlem, Ga at 3:00am. Driving through the north GA mountains currently. See you guys soon.

Orestes and Enrique are ahead of us. They were going through Atlanta around rush hour yesterday evening.

Have a safe run bud!  Yesterday we had good weather so we got some fuel burned.  Joe And Colleen Gilbert we’re here for the evening session flying a new Cavalier a couple flights.  Mark Weiss arrived as well as Rick Huff and they did some crack patching out on circle 4.  I went over early to where they were doing the scale processing.  Not much was happening yet but I took a few pics of some of the CL entries.

We are headed to lunch but despite it being a little windy Gene Martine, Stan Powell and myself got some trimming flights in.  Steve Millet and Don Cranfill had it going on two for a while.  Jim Aron arrived.  Good to see him after a long delayed return to the LPad.  Scale is happening and word has it Hazel Sig is over there.  Hazel is 97!  Shirley Sheeks is also in attendance.

Jim I sure wish you would make this trip again......There are some flying down on the grass circles and are getting their vehicles in and out.  Choosing you're ground carefully seems to be the trick.  Saw someone entering the grounds pulling a pontoon boat.....seriously.  Maybe next week...There are a couple pretty good lakes over by site four where they did the scale static judging.  I haven't seen the pond out front of HQ overtop the road like it did a couple years ago-not even close.  I haven't checked out the progress on the wooden centers but Doug and Kathleen are here.  I'm sure Doug will gator-bite 'em if they aren't ready.

FYI. Just spent some time over in the grass area.  The conditions have been exaggerated.  It’s mostly dry and drivable.  Quite a few people over here getting ready for Beginner and Intermediate tomorrow.

We woke up to a light rain this morning.  Beginner and Intermediate will be flown today and may be against a steady string of showers all morning.  The radar shows a narrow band stretching across the whole state but rolling it's full length right over us like a garden hose.  Extra shoes and socks will be required equipment in the grass.
There were a few out on the pad last night but the wind was 11-13 so good food, good friends and good wine beckoned.

Christ I believe you can enter up until about noon Monday-paying a small sum more than an early entry.  If you do you will HAVE TOO be at the 180 building before 2:00 pm Monday with your airplane for appearance judging and the pilots meeting/ flight order draw.

The skies smiled on the Beginners and Intermediate pilots.  Around 9:00 the rain stopped so the events were completed.  I'm sorry I got really nothing in the form of pictures or details since I was burning in some flights on a pretty busy LPad.  I'm hoping someone who was down there will send any pics and details .  Nice to see Bill Rich flying today.  Japan has fielded a good team here-but I haven't Kaz as yet.   Mr. Hiki and Mr. Masa were working on circle four.

Back to the field late this afternoon as about everyone else was getting there for practice.  A very nasty storm blew up and most ran to the pavilion.  Seemed like 50-60 mph wind and hard blinding rain non-stop for 15-20 minutes.  Two guys each trying to hold onto each airplane.  Still pouring.  Done for the day.  Just looking at the latest on the hurricane headed our way......maybe this was a warmup.  It looks like it's taken an even better aim at us than this morning.

How have the Muncie temps been? Super hot and humid here in SO MN the past couple days with humid and 90-ish degree temps forecast from now through next weekend.

It was pretty warm and humid today!  Was glad to retreat to A/C with some nice food and a cold beer!  Rain came in this evening, a bit gusty (20-30 mph) but cleaned up for a nice evening.
