My boys and I like to watch this on the web sometimes. We like watching the Heli's perform to music also. We know a guy that is a DJ and a great heli pilot, a great show every time.

I have seen similar videos of flights of these type of 3-D models, and they have light weight streamers on each wing tip. Makes a great affect and lets you really see the corners on pullouts and such. You might think that on fast aileron rolls, while going that slow, they might wrap around the tail or at least get caught up some way, but they never seem to. Some have reversable pitch props, and dive to the floor and stop inches from the floor and back straight up until they can pull out forward again. That's pretty cool! Wish I could do that with my Park Zone Champ!

You forget todays generation is buy and destroy. Why learn to build when they can buy ready to fly. If only we had a CL plane like that for indoors. Well, now I think of it, we do but getting it out in vast numbers is holding it up with an affordable price.

I guess I am just an old dinosaur but I have to echo Mike Keville's sentiments. It is like playing a video game, there is no connection the the model where you can feel it and become one with it. I have a couple of foamie toys I play with sometimes but it is what it is...remote

Your going to show us real flying skills in C/L to emulate that flying and believe me a Bi Slob isn't going to cut it. I've also seen too many people in C/L buy their rides, sold quite a few of them myself.
Mike, C/L is not the defining moment of model flying but part of the whole hobby. These people are good at what they do. accept it and move on.

Maybe they are out there but I never met a 3D fixed wing flyer who built their own plane from scratch nor have I ever met anyone who built an RC helicopter from scratch.

Hi Mike,

Check this website out. These are from what I've heard the best 3D giant scale kits. Lots of money, but might be something I'd like to try and build when I'm rich (hopefully) in the future.

RC guys do scratch build planes and heli's, but I thinks it's much more rare than CL. I have the templates for a RC 3D plane laid out on foan for a future project. And I know a guy who even builds his own gyro boards for his quadcopters. But again I think it's rare. And we also have credit card modelers in CL, too.

OK let me clarify...I said I had "never met one but they may be out there", so from what you guys are telling me there are some RC 3D flyers and Heli flyers that take a set of plans and build these things from scratch. That is great if they do. When I had to leave here for 5 years because of Katrina, I joined an RC club in Georgia. There were over 120 members in the club and only two of us flew Control Line..myself and Bob Dixon. Of the other 118 members who flew RC helicopters, pattern ships and 3 D ships, all of them were ARF's. No one I knew in that club built ANY RC anythings from scratch.

Dennis I started flying CL and Free flight when I was 13 years old in 1960. I have never been to te NATS and do not know if I will ever go to the NATS but sheltered is not a word I would use to describe how I lived my life or what my knowledge is on Model Planes....I took no offense to your comment but it was just wrong...

I still contend and will always contend that the Control Line Pilot who builds either from a kit or from a set of plans with a pile of balsa is light years ahead of your average ARF RC pilot. Just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions...

I belonged to an R/C club that had the majority of the models built by the members. and to clarify your perception of arf in R/C buy an R/C helicopter and proceed to build it and then get back to me. Same with a good jet or large scale top gun model. These are not arfs in any way that you can imagine. and you would certainly balk at the cost and expertise required to get these models to competent levels of appearance and performance.. You keep mistaking the casual sunday flyer as the real R/C modeler just as you and others assume that those who don't build in C/L can't be real modellers. With this perception is it any wonder that C/L has an image problem in many places.
I really do wish that this sanctimonious attitude of having to build your model would die out as it is now and always will be counter productive to any continuance of this hobby in any meaningful manner.

Way to go guys, lets get back to having fun. When I was a member of an RC club I was the go to guy for engine problems. Also in some cases helping set up new planes at the field. But, I did have a newbie teach me one thing. If you are running muffler pressure with the stock muffler why put your finger over the venture of the throttle control! Put finger over muffler out let and flip prop or hit it with the electric finger.

I am a 3D fixed wing flyer and I build all my planes by scratch from either plans or short kits. You're underestimating the skill of many R/C pilots, both in building and in flying. As for building an RC helicopter from scratch, well, if you've ever looked at a 3D heli up close, you'd realize that it's made up of a million tiny pieces. Putting one together is more complicated and time consuming than you could ever imagine.
