The difference is, this place is built for rain. Deep and big drains, highly crowned roads and plenty of runoff space. It's just depressing. Other places get flooded.

No trees, cars or cows flying through the air, though, so I'm not sure why Howard's complaining.

I'm not sure about Seattle, but in Portland we usually get a dry spell in January or February.  It's usually what counts for "freaking cold" here in the PNW (sometimes the lows even get down into the high 20's -- if they get down into the teens then pipes burst all over town), but it's often clear and sometimes even calm.

Beautiful country in the NW, but......anything less than 70F is unacceptable.

That said, Tucson often drops into the 20s and 30s (or less), January & February.  Fortunately, it doesn't last long.

I met a guy one day near Estacada that reenterated o me that he was never warm in Oregon since he got here to do cycle oregon. I had other problems with a blown knee so I didn't care to listen to him about our weather and I maybe should have suggested that he stay in Califrnia where he would remain warm all year.

If you ever meet a flyer from Threeson, who claims to fly all year around, and who puts up more than 2-3 flights a session, then take a good look at the palm of his flying hand. If he ain't lyin' to ya, then you're gonna see some permanent burn marks from where the handle touched him after sitting in the scorching sun. On the other hand (so to speak), I heard combat newbies go there just to learn how to fly lefty. Ya gotta pass the handle back n' forth like hot potatoes. The precision stunt dudes is too smart for any of that. They learn how to get up before the crack of dawn, get them flights in, and go do the siesta thing. It's a lifestyle. Heck, you can build in the air conditioning the rest of the day. Oh, and them PA gents all build custom handles what ain't got no exposed metal in 'em neither. Some of 'em even have a little custom bag to hold the handle while they politely wait their turn. No foolin' them boys....

I wasn't so smart. I just visited there and got burned. And I was praying for more wind just so's I could catch my breath it was so hot. And don't tell me about it was a dry heat. Yes it was. Just like shoving my head in the oven set on 375.

Best part about the NW (SW to the Canadians) is that we have the wet/west side and the dry/east side. Here's a picture showing a spectacular picture of Wenatchee (east side) at night, and another showing an unknown area of the west side.  Steve

Hey, I've been to Tuscon town when they had sun, clouds, rain, snow, sleet and then back to sun all in one day.  This year on the way home, we had high winds, sleet in Texas canyon and dust storm by the time we got to Los Cruces.   But, I still remember the talk I had with the late Joe Ortiz when I asked him how he  liked it out there.   He stated they were at the circle flying when it got light enough and then back to the shop by 0900.   Then back to the circle before sundown for a couple more flights.   He said he loved it there.

Here in Eastern Washington we have well over 250 days a year of Sunshine.  It does get warm in July and August, but the night time temps are really nice.  With a bit of luck I have been able to fly 12 months out of the year with just a bit of planning.  No big crowds, excellent roads, fantastic Trout, Bass, Walleye, Salmon fishing. the only thing we don't have in abundance is rain.

when I lived in Montana it would warm up to about 36 so we would go to the ballfeild and scoop shovel a takeoff strip in the snow for takeoff and landing. Those Fox 35's used to throw a very large flame when they bacfired and sometimes the plane would catch on fire so we always had a large rag with us to put out the flames. In the afternoon it would cool down to zero so we would pack up and go home. That was our winter flying. in the fall we always got high winds so we learned to fl in te wind or we didn't fly just like riding bicycle in oregon. If you dont ride in the rain you don't ride.

Randy...Portland has a lot more wind than Seattle-Tacoma, and then there's those ice-storms for which Portland is rather famous. We can have any day of the year cold and crappy, but we can also have a lovely sunny and warm day any time of year. I recall finishing my cedar fence on a Dec. 28 (about '80) wearing jeans and a T-shirt. It got a bit chilly as the sun was going down, but it was very nice. Might not happen this year or next year, but wait for it. Let's count our blessings!

Well Dave...Smart people here in Tucson fly early in the morning in the summer time and quit when the temperature reaches about 90 degrees (around 10:00 AM typically...from early October (like now) see Mike's weather chart above.  Except for a few days in January when it's in the low 50's we fly year' round...Most days the wind is 2 -4 MPH until about noon when it has been known to blow a little.
I've flown CL in just about every part of the USA and several countries in europe and even one in SE Asia (not too bad except for the land mines) and truly believe Southern AZ (Tucson) is the best bet all around.  Worst part is finding time to build with flying all the time!!!

PS:  Smart folks also use flying handles with wooden handles wrapped with tennis tape...we smart folks have discovered they don't get hot!!!

Howard,  Been to your area a few times. It is amazing to see grass that grows on the roofs. Trees that are completely covered with moss. Strange thing is that it never rained while I was there? Went up to Mount Baker to see the view. Suddenly there right across the road was a wall of snow 12 foot high. There also  where evergreen tree branches sticking out of the snow. Never saw that before. I have seen the Spruce Goose and the Boeing museum. The Seattle airport is worth seeing as is the Space needle. We found the area to be interesting in many ways. Maybe someday for no particular reason I could return.

Indeed. Be sure to ask Howard to name all the various examples of vegetation growing in his rain gutters. Marilou won't let him on the roof, he's too cheap to hire out the job, there's no way I will deal with gutters other than my own.

It ought be known that this summer we had an 80-day period which resulted in .030-inch of rain. That is not a typo. A mere 1/32" of rain. Don't tell anybody...

I was raised on a farm in the Yakima Valley and have lived in the Seattle area for about 45 years. All things considered I prefer the former, but have learned to adapt to the latter. This is helped by the fact that a mere 2 1/2-hour road trip takes me home, an activity in which eldest grandurchin (13 years old) and I have been participating. Turns out the Hated Honda can be packed full of fishing gear and various long guns, adding immeasurably to the fun.

And while it took some effort and research, for years and years I have enjoyed a vegetable garden superior to those on the farm. At this moment that garden is approximately 80% filled with either winter crops and/or over-wintered crops. I literally have a year-round garden from which we enjoy fresh vegetables, albeit select varieties only.

Two examples only: We have Brussels sprouts and Merlin beets growing quite well. With each the trick is to let the plants get frosted a couple times, after which Ma Nature prods them along to maturity, both sprouts and beets getting sweeter. Never liked sprouts? Ah, but you haven't tried mine...

I tried digging some in the yard the other day.  But I had to stop when my shovel hit the permafrost!

So we live in an area where it rains once in awhile....and drizzles the rest of the time.  But Fred and I got in some great (wind less) flying today in Salem.  Temp about 58 degrees.  Saw a beautiful AT-6 come and then make a VERY noisy takeoff, must of had the mainafold guage pegged.

Yup, nothing wrong with today for flying at Auburn Muni, either. Pete answered the phone, but his knee refurb isn't yet ready. Mike's phone was offline. I'm sure Ferguson was working hard down at the Boeing salt mine. Not much point in practising right now anyway, with no contests until May.
