New Plane
« on: November 12, 2012, 10:19:50 AM »
This has been a somewhat of a long project and it's great to see it's coming to an end. I still need to install decals, and clear coat. The model is Dee Rices Oriental Plus powered by Ro-Jett .40 piped motor. The wing is fully composite.

Bro bro, a foam wing with 1/64 plywood is a composite. Doug Moon made a wing out of fiberglass-that is a composite. Jose Modesto specializes in Carbon fiber wings-that is a composite. A fully balsa sheeted wing with carbon fiber veil all over-that is a composite.

So the question is, what composite is it?

Stephen,

The plane looks great.  I hope to see it in Dallas next summer.

Thanks guys for the comments and hopefully I'll have more flying time next year. In reference to the wing it's foam core that was sheeted with balsa then fiber glass. The foam was them removed. Dee Rice wrote an article about the process last year I believe. The wing is straight and strong.

Actually, Dee's composite wing article was Flying Models, May 2009—the same issue as the Pathfinder LE.

How does that wing construction compare with the normal sheeted foam core construction relative to weight and time/effort involved ?

Thanks Matt.
2009 wow I have been a busy man for a few years.
Allan,
It's a little more time consuming, but I believe if constructed correctly it's lighter, and very easy to finish.

Cut the foam out using hot wire. Similar to coring the wing.

Thanks Tom it has been awhile. Life and work has been keeping me real busy.
