I think it would be cool and a LOT of fun to have teams build Brodak 1/2's on Thursday and fly them on Friday? Then donate them, complete with engine, lines and handle to the kids hanging around?
junkyard only proves that Orville Wright was right....
Why not try to improve our sport, rather than demeaning it by proving that stuff made from trash can fly?

I was one of the "Demeaners"  No apologies!!!

I have tried helping kids, young and old.  I have given planes with engines, fuel, handles and lines.  The results are the same.  This hobby typically does not hold their fascination compared to computer games and RC.  I enjoyed the Junkyard Wars and found that a lot of thought went into building the planes with the goal of flying them and keeping them together.  I had some pretty talented team mates too.  I went to Brodaks to have fun and I did.  I look forward to the Junkyard Wars again next year too. 

Really we are probably recreating how the first CL planes were built and are participating in a historical event

OK, peabody, you expressed your opinion, I'll express mine.
I think your post is an insidious crock of s***. 
 
A lot of people really enjoy the event - it's fun, it's a diversion and stimulates creativity. It also draws the most audience of any event there.
And then you have the audacity to call it demeaning. Here's a suggestion - if you don't like it, go away. Go into town and do something productive. Make the Fly-In more enjoyable with your absense. God forbid you should witness the "demeaning" of our sport. You and your negative attitude will not be missed.
And by the way, you stated "kids hanging around". I don't remember a lot of kids other than the ones that Mike was teaching to fly.
Building a plane and giving it to some kid only to later find it in the trash accomplishes nothing. Been there, done that.
We will continue to have Junkyard Wars - with or without your approval.

And those are my thoughts.

I hate to say it, but giving something away that could cause injury is sure way to end up on the wrong side of a huge law suit.

Take a look at all the warnings and disclaimers on product packaging and Ebay.  Mr Brodak is already sticking his neck out a mile by hosting the Fly In at all.  Putting quickly-built "ready to fly" in the hands of strangers would really put the icing on the cake.

Hooray for Bob Z.  Nothing like speaking your mind.  If Mr P wants something different let him organize it with John's blessing.  But, after leaving John in the lurch at the NATS one year,  John may not go for it.  Of  he may more forgiving than I am.

 I respectfully disagree with both of you. If you keep them interested long enough you will prevail. I tell my nephews the computer is down. They no longer ask. They see the results of their efforts and want to learn more. Sometimes, not always, it's the teacher not the kids. We knuckle under too quickly. I like nothing better than to watch those two have at that Super Ringmaster. They will be back Thursday, and have told me over the phone what they wish to do with it this weekend.

Is it really down?  You have to let them choose.  I am not bitter or disappointed in the kids not interested in flying our models.  Many of us believe these kids are missing out on how to develop the skills we learned by building and flying models, and this is simply not true.  They are using a different mechanism to achieve the same thing we did with balsa wood and plans.  The main difference to me is we played outside and were very physical and that has been replaced by WII FITNESS (sp).

Each kid is different. And kids change as they get older.
I have two boys, and I introduced them both to C/L flying. One stuck with it until he flew the coop and the other one flew for a little while and figure out it was not for him. I sure enjoyed having both of them at the field. It was fun while it lasted.
