Grey Ghost and Ballerina
« on: January 16, 2013, 04:38:39 PM »
Hey Guys, I would like to find the plans for the Grey Ghost as well as the Ballerina, They were both published in late 50s, early 60s; Both were .35 sized stunt ships. Any help would be appreciated.

RSM kits the Grey Ghost and Eric sells plans to his kits. FM has the Ballerina III plans if that's what you need.

Ballerina by Charles Lickliter was originally in Flying Models, October 1959.  Had full size formers and airfoils.  When Bob Hunt was editor of Flying Models, he often featured reruns of those original articles, including this one in Flying Models, April 1997.  These should be available from Flying Models.  The 59 plans are available from the AMA plans service.

The Grey Ghost by Larry Scarinzi was in Flying Models, February 1960.  Plans are listed in the AMA plans service.

Hi Trostle, thanks for kicking my brain into gear. I have both mags and will have to dig them out.  My magazine collection is pretty complete from the late 50s and early 60s and are cased and stored away. With the Grey Ghost being available in kit form, that is probably the way that I will go. The Ballerina will come afterwords. The Cheek cowel version is the one that I like.

I think these were all new articles and plans.  Tom Dixon wrote some of them and so did Bob Hunt.  Charles Lickliter wrote the Ballerina article.  This was a new article and the plane may be a later version of the Ballerina than 59.  Bob Hunt is great.  What he did at Flying Models and later Model Aviation was just fantastic....Vulcan, USA 1, Atom etc.

There's a magazine scan of the FM Grey Ghost plan floating around the interwebs. Looks like it is enlarged from the article. Lines are thick but I suppose it can be used if you really want to.
I built a Blue Pants as a kid. Wish I still had it. Might even learn to fly it.

Quite a few years ago I drew a set of plans for the Grey Ghost as I was thinking of building it. I changed the spar as the one in the plane is very odd.It seems like Larry didn't have enough 1/2 sq and had to use a bunch of short pieces. ~^

Actually, the spar used in the Grey Ghost is very structurally sound.  It's very strong where it needs to be and light where it can be.  Given the type of construction used I wouldn't alter it unless you're adding sheeting etc.

Ballerina was in Oct 59 Flying models. The plane pictured in that article was the cowl cheek version, but the plans to not correctly interpret that version. The FM plans show a Nobleresuqe looking nose. When I built mine I did an interpretation of the photos with the cowl cheeks and the birdhouse canopy. While I was involved in the project, I corresponded with Mr Lickliter and he offered that the Ballerina III was the best flying version. That one appears in FM April 97.

The maroon and Gold Ballerina was by Tom Sugar I believe. Mike Keville might remember.

Thanks for posting the pictures Mike. I always liked the looks of the Ballerina, especially the cheek cowel version.

Same with the Grey Ghost, its looks was always what I liked about it.

They will make good additions to my fleet.

Regards, Phil

Hi Phil:

I worked with Larry to make certain that the plan we have in the RSM kit is accurate and properly reflects Larry's Grey Ghost as  designed. Both the kit and plans are available at www.rsmdistribution.com
