Forum realities
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:52:34 PM »
You can insert any number of model topics in place of "light bulb" to make it relevant to our forum.

How many stunthanger forum members does it take to change a light bulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs

6 to argue over whether it’s “lightbulb” or “light bulb” …

another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is “lamp”

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that “light bulb” is perfectly correct

19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a light bulb forum

11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty

5 People to post pics of their own light bulbs

15 People to post “I can’t see S$%^!” and their own light bulbs

7 to post URL’s where one can see examples of different light bulbs

4 to post that the URL’s were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL’s

13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add “Me too”

5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy

4 to say “didn’t we go through this already a short time ago?”

13 to say “do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs”

1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that George W. isn’t the brightest bulb.

4 more to get into personal attacks over their political views.

1 moderator to lock the light bulb thread.

1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.

Are you referring to incandescent, or CFLs? You are aware that the former is now illegal, so starting a topic about an illegal activity may be . . . illegal.

Clint,

Great post and I am not trying to take away your thunder and your list may already cover this other group, but:

I think there is another group.  I have no idea how many would post on your listing of light bulb changers, but there will be some who will post that because of all of the negative comments already posted, they just will not change their light bulbs any more or have anything to do with changing any light bulbs or have anything to do with those that do change light bulbs.  They would prefer to live in the dark than to be associated in any way with those who are known light bulb changers.  And some will feel so strongly about it that they are burning their membership card in the Precision Light Bulb Changers of the World Guild (PLBCWG), an organization that everybody knows has enlightened the world, particularly with their bimonthly newsletter PLBCWG News.

Well, don't leave out the questions, "Were the lightbulbs,or light bulbs, or lamps meeting the specs. for energy savings? Were they environmentally friendly?" Might add considerations of correct gender use, inclusiveness,  and not to mention proper ghrammar, spellang, and "puntuwaytion".
All joking aside, I thought it was a very good post, and a very funny post. It really did sum up what happens in some of threads on this forum. Someone said earlier that this is what forums are about- I agree. The only criticism I have is when we cross the lines of respect for each other and resort to name calling and other nastiness. I'm always for good debate and expressing one's opinions on this forum as long as they follow the guidlines that the moderators have esablished.

I work in maintenance, so I change my own light bulbs, but in this politically correct world we live in today, they REALLY have to WANT to change!!!!

And I heard a gentleman who owned a light bulb factory on the radio recently that said even though the have "banned " incandescent they are still available, all they had to do to side step the ban was call all of their products "heavy duty" or "rough duty" or something like that and they haven't skipped a beat in their production.
I haven't found a CFL worth the paper or plastic that it was packaged in yet. I hope they get the LED stuff further along and priced more attractively.

Where does all this leave Halogen bulbs? That is what I have been buying now.

Not sure if they are Classic or OT legal: they look almost the same as OT bulbs but the function is a bit different.

This topic reminded me of my Grandmother's house. When it was sold about 1980 (she was about 90 and needed to go into a nursing home), there were Edison lightbulbs still being used daily in her basement lights. I don't know when Edison lightbulbs were last produced, but I'd guess that they were about 40 or 50 years old and still working. Which goes to prove, they just don't build lightbulbs like they usta...  ;) Steve

One guy to change the light bulb and 20 or so to write angry letters about how candles were better, anyone who promotes electric light is "the biggest con man on earth", and claim that the popularity of electric light is due to a deep dark conspiracy by people 3000 miles away against open flames (and patriotism - despite the fact that the candles are made in Italy). Later, the instant they sell the last of their $400 custom-modified candles, they discover that oil lamps are really the best thing ever - and then claim to have invented them.

And 12 more to discuss how good the old one was and why did we have to change it anyway.

Does this same guy harp on the fact of his extreme expertise, but later admits that he has never actually flipped a switch, but that he certainly plans to try it in the near future?

Does he ask embarrassingly rudimentary questions, and once he gets the answers, claim that his question was really a quiz for the forum, because he knew the answer all along? And then delete the thread entirely once people express their irritation?

Did he start with a simple flashlight bulb, then glue various geegaws to the outside of it, and now claim it was intended to be a scale model of a chandelier the entire time?

Thankfully, we have no one like that here!
