Flap Set Up Trainer, HELP
« on: April 13, 2011, 10:27:05 AM »
Hello all, I am a newbie to the sit so please excuse me if this was posted in the wrong area. I met a fellow while at the Toledo show who introduced me to this site when I inquired on where to find some basic info on starting out with C/L. flying. With that I have been messing around with some basic Brodak kits (flight streaks and small .049 homemade jobs) but I am interested in what a good basic starter kit is that has Flap to Elevator set up. Also somewhere that explains the correct set up and how to set one of these systems up if I were to build one. I have many years under my belt of scratch building and R/C flying so the building part is not a roadblock. I would just like to try one of these set ups to experience some of the tighter maneuvers I see being done that are not possible with a standard elevator set up.
Thanks for the help and info.

Gregg

I would say, something in the .35-.45 size would be good. I am a fan of the Smoothie and the Thunderbird myself, but there are MANY great choices. There are some good profile airplanes as well. Banshee, Twister, Limitation... ;)

In the meanwhile,
Check the balance(for/aft) on your Flight Streak.
If nose heavy will not turn sharp or tight. Also may need to increase control movement.
A well trimmed FS should turn good.

A properly balanced Flite Streak will turn tight enough to scare you.

Thanks for all the feedback. I would like to stick to something with a Profile fuse and I have a few Fox .35's and a brand new O.S. 25 looking for a home. What is the Brodak Clown like? again I would like to try something with a flap mix.

Thanks again.

I would recommend the SIG Twister as a more capable airplane in a profile. The 25 (FP or LA) would be excellent for that.

I agree, something a little larger than the flight streak or the super clown would be better.

I have no advice beyond the expert opinion of my peers - However let me be the first to say

Welcome to the family - Whether you have aspirations to take home a big stunt prize one day - or build a twister that people admire ,we are all here for the love of Control line in all forms.

Newcomers are welcome - there is no question that is " too silly or too basic " Everyone must start somewhere and not everyone knows everything - so dont be shy.

Collectively I can say - there isn't anything we cant solve, no question to tough.. no problem unsolvable.

At our disposal ,we have World Champions, Nationals champions, expert builders, expert engine guys - and engine builders, USA team members, Advanced fliers, scale guys, painters, engineer's, beginners, advanced guys, 18 yr olds who just got their license, and retired folk for whom Model planes is a way of life not just a hobby.

We all started out from the very beginning. - So once again - Welcome Greg & Enjoy

OK, pulled the trigger on a Twister yesterday eve.  #^ Are there any mods to be had for this as I am building it (like extending the fuse double back further ect)? Also I have a brand new OS LA 25, would this be a good set up for this? I also have several Fox 35's as well, I just didn't know which one would be the better choice.

Thanks again

Gregg,

A search on "Fancher Twister" here will yield more than you can hope for.  Here's one particularly relevant thread with a link to the original 1987 MA articles.

HI Greg,

Built straight and not too heavy, the stock Twister will fly extremely well.  You can go ahead and do the "mods" but maybe a straight out of the box build will suffice for now.

For the LA .25 I will suggest swapping out the remote NVA for the OS parts that are for the older FP series, they are a direct swap and available from Tower (the parts numbers have been listed here many times).  Venturi and NVA is all that's needed there.  I would also recommend swapping the plastic back plate for a metal one.  Curtis Shipp, a member here, makes excellent back plates for this.  I have seen too many of the plastic back plates leak on the LA series when running them in stunt planes so a bit of aggravation can possibly be missed by the swap.

After a couple tanks of "break in" (they really do not need much break in at all), I would use an APC 10-4 and set the engine just back from peak.  Running what's called a "wet 2" cycle.  A very consistent run that produces plenty of usable power.  Just try not to build the Twister too heavy! ;D

I wouldn't try to get it to 4-2 like a Fox .35, it defeats the purpose and won't be easy to achieve with the LA engine's timing.  Any good fuel with about 10% nitro and 20-22% oil, 1/2 and 1/2 castor/synthetic seems to work best, and use a good "hot" plug.
