Hey Linn,
Bob Lampione here,
I couldn't believe it when I saw that ship. My AMA # at the time was 36616 and when I became a CD I opted for 616 which is on the NATS winning Sabre and the original "The United".
Wow, that was my first real competition airplane after many sessions with my legendery teacher, Gene Shaffer.
My first NATS with that was 1965 or 1966, whichever one was at Willow Grove Naval Air Station at the time. It got me either 10th or 11th Place (You need to check the accuracy of that with our Historian Wynn Paul). When I went back in 1969 with the Sabre, that was the year that was for me.
Hung out till 1972, went through a herendous divorce and moved into Manhattan and the singles scene and became a very avid golfer.
I use to wander out to Flushing Meadows every now and then and fly anybody's airplane I could. I never lost the desire. Twenty years later I wound up at Chicopee, Mass with the 60 size white United II and qualified in the top twenty with it after laying it in inverted during a practice flight the morning of qualifying.
That became known as the famous " I pulled a Lampione Manuever" which is still famous to today.
I think 2006 was the first year I didn't live up to my reputation, Thank GOD.
Lets see some more old pictures.
Love and kisses and remaining yours in STUNT,
Bob "Champione" Lampione
