CA glue info?
« on: February 10, 2013, 05:46:07 PM »
Asking for  detailed info on the first appearance of  CA glue ?  IE - specific dates when
first advertised and/or written about in the mags.

I want to put a small piece about the emergence of CA glue for use in stunt  in the appropriate chapter (year).
Going to do the same thing for  Monokote.  Already have items such as flaps, mufflers, foam wing,  pipes,  fiber props, etc.

        Regards

It was some time in the 1970's.  I started subscribing to FM in 1977, I think it was already being touted as a "new thing" at that point.

Info on the Wikipedia site is accurate - including Eastman 910's use in the latter stages of Vietnam to temporarily mend wounds.

To my knowledge, the first CA for sale to the modeling community was Bob & Bill Hunter's "Hot Stuff".  I first saw it being used at Free Flight meets in Taft, CA, early '70s.

Other suppliers quickly jumped on the bandwagon.

I believe Mike is correct.
I remember first time I saw it commercially available was from "Satelite City" in early 70's as "Hot Stuff". another early non public use was at mortuaries to glue skin back in place and close wounds without unsightly stitches.

I saw Super Glue being used at the 70 Glenview Nats for building scads of combat ships along with Monokote in the Hanger. They thought they had died and gone to heaven.

It was satellite city and hotstuff that introduced the hobby to C/A.
It came in two 1/2 oz bottles and was really expensive. I think perhaps 7/8 dollars. I still think that it is the best C/A that we had to build models. Perhaps the purest for sure. From what you read it seems that there is a fair amount of dilution that now goes into the product. You were guaranteed a small volcano of fumes from everyglue joint that you made with that product

Mid-'70s, Satellite City had an advertizing campaign going. My club, the Pacific Coast Flying Gryphons, had a rep appear at one of our meetings.
He gave us a stack of stickers (4" X 5"? or thereabouts) that were bright slime green, printed in black.
Their product was called "Hot Stuff", thus the legend:

I'm happy without that volcano, for the most part.  I built so many models, so fast, with Hot Stuff in my early teens that now I have a permanent sensitivity to it.  If I use too much of it at once I get stuffed up for days.  I can use the foam safe stuff, but I keep winning the regular stuff at my RC club raffles...
