Big oops on backplates.

If you get a backplate from me would you check to see if a fine burr is on the gasket surface. If you find a burr I can send you another backplate and I will pay all shipping cost or you can remove the burr with a fine file or emery cloth.

I have held up shipping for a few days while I clean up the backplates that have the burr here at the shop.

I did a search on the LA backplate and found this thread. I just bought one (LA .46 C/L)for the first time at the LHS. I ran it on a test plane and could see bubbles emerging from the plastic backplate mating face to the crankcase Are you still making these? If not,
is there any outfit that retrofits the plastic POS backplate to a normal aluminum?

The only time I've ever had a problem with a plastic LA backplate  was a few weeks ago.  The engine run got a little erratic and it suddenly started going lean at the end of the tank.  Took a close look, put in a new backplate screw to replace the one that had fallen out and it was back to normal.

I agree with Brett and Phil. Unless you have crashed the plane that might have caused a hair line crack the plastic back plate it's fine. Just need to seal it and tighten it up.

I really like the LA 46 engines and have a few running box stock.

Here is what I suggest.

* Remove the screws and put lock tight on them and tighten back down. Do not over tighten or you will crack the back plate. You can also replace the screws with hex cap screws if you wish. Some people do just because they do not have the correct screw driver. (It's the Japanese version of a Phillips)

* You could as Brett suggest while you have the screws out put a little sealer around the edge.


You can buy a new back plate if you feel the need, but it will bubble too if not sealed correctly.

Just my 2 cents....
