Annual trip to Wright/Pat USAF museum

We are planing our annual trip to the U S Airforce museum in Dayton Ohio.
date will be Saturday March 16th and we will join up in the main entrance at 9:00 a m, we'll tour all 4 buildings with lunch to follow.

I remember my first trip with John Davis and Roger Wildman back in the 90's, it was always a great way to stay connected with the modelers in the mid-west. Hope you all can make it and start your tradition. Drop me a line if you can join us.

I'm down!  I only live about 20 mins away   bring a plane!  we can head over to the flying field after (weather permitting!)!

I was there a couple months ago. They have the presidential hanger open now. First time I was there was as a child in 1978. The Valkyrie was parked outside in those days!

Used to live in the base housing across from the Museum.  Wright was active at that time.  Last time I was there they had an F4-E that was one of the planes in my squadron back in the war that we all forgot.  I just checked the Virtual tour and it has been replaced by a "D" model.  Can you imagine that, replacing an "E with a lowly "D".  At least they picked up one that I worked on when they got back to in Korea.   Wish I could join you - lots of memories.

2 of my buddies and I drove over there in 1961 just after we graduated from high school.  Took my buddies dad's 1956 Crown Vic, fast and loud duals.  At that time most planes were in sad shape sitting outside.  Fabric covered planes, a Sabrejet and the defected Mig were in a quonset hut.   We DIDN'T know what to expect.  I was finishing up a Scalemaster Jenny for the 1961 Willow Grove ants.  In the hut was a complete Jenny (It is now hanging in the museum) and a stripped fuselage.  I went nuts!

I remember taking a day during NATS week to go through the museum.   Then several tears ago Melvin and I drove over for a day.  Boy has it changed.   My son and I stopped there on the way home from the first Chickopee NATS.   The shape I'm in now I would have to spend a week there.

For those inclined to warmer climates, especially this time of year, may I suggest the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola. It is a first class collection of historic USN and USMC aircraft and artifacts, combined with regularly scheduled features in a marvelous IMAX theater. Halfway through the tour, if so desired, you may enjoy genuine world famous Cubi dogs and chili, served with San Miguel beer, in the recreated Cubi Bar Cafe. The cafe uses the actual furniture, squadron plaques and shuffle board as portrayed in the movie "Flight of the Intruder", which were saved from the now defunct Cubi O'Club at Subic Bay, Philippines.

Other notable tourist attractions in the Pensacola area are the coastal Forts Pickens, Barrancas and George. The Cryptologic Command Display at Corry Station is a museum for those interested in codebreaking and spook history.

Dinner at McGuires Irish Pub is hard to beat. Tip: be sure to walk into the correct lavatory when you must excuse yourself. The entrances are intentionally misleading and tables of guests sit nearby delighting in the embarrassing misfortune of wrongful trespassers. The menu is moderately priced but yes, there is indeed a $100 hamburger which may in fact be ordered (ask me how I know). During hometown airshows and rehearsals it is not uncommon to see members of the Blue Angels frequent the pub during happy hour. If you catch one laying his cover (cap) on the counter, the rules stipulate that he must buy a round of drinks for the entire bar.
