doping a wing
« on: January 25, 2019, 08:54:52 AM »

A few days ago I doped a skinned foam wing, and dropped the thing on the floor/ground, what is the best way to get the crud off the wing?  Thanks

What sort of crud?  If it's sandable crud (household dust, balsa dust, and balsa shavings) I'd be tempted to brush it off as best as I could with my hand, paint over it, and sand the mess flat.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Tim, so much is crud that you find on the floor of your shop, dust, balsa shavings, just crud, I am gonna try to brush as much off as I can, then go from there, thanks for your reply..

Unless someone else weighs in I think that's the best you can do.  If the crud is just dust and balsawood, then it should actually sand pretty well.  My worry in my shop would be metal shavings or large sand grains that would roll under the sandpaper and make big scratches -- but even then I think the only way to find them would be to give it a whirl, and maybe pick the offending nuggets out with a pin under a strong light.

Do brush off any cats or small children that may be stuck to it, though.

Put a coat on the top and lay the wing upside down on the floor.  Now finish over it and tell everybody that they are a new form of vortex generators. LL~

My last contest design before my great trip into the wilderness was names the "Surveyor"  It was named that because of all of the benchmarks on the wings. :X

Try 75% thinner 25% retarder, soak a rag and wipe it off.

Block sand it when it is completely dry. Coating over it may trap some stuff that could come back to haunt you later. Just block sand that first coat completely off and wipe down with a tack rag.
  Type at you later,

... then today I doped it again ...

The first time around I read that as "then today I dropped it again".  WHAT??.  The I re-read it -- it sounded much happier the second time.
