2016 Brodak's fun fly
« on: June 12, 2016, 06:39:34 PM »
Sunday was a practice day. The weather was good except for a gusty swirling breeze which discouraged flying.
The contests starts tomorrow.

Most of today's flying was done by 17 year cicadas. I only shot two flights and don't start getting in the groove till about 5 or ten flights. A great day for shooting static shots and saying hi to everybody and resting up from the trip.

Today's events were:
Profile Precision Aerobatics: Beginner( 16 entries) - Intermediate  (21 entries)- Advanced  (28 entries)-
Expert (18 entries).
Judges:
Beginner: Price Reese and Dennis Moritz
Intermediate: John Tate and John Simpson
Advanced: Joe Gilbert and Tim Stagg
Expert: Dick  Carville and Wayne Robinson

Foxberg racing: Sportsman and Expert. (Afternoon)

Carrier: Starts monday at 8 am, runs over to tuesday.
.15 carrier- Profile carrier - Sportsman carrier - Carrier 1 and 2 combined.

I went over to the beginner pits and looked at the different types of airplanes over there. I saw the following;  Super Clown, Cardinal, Tutor 2, F-51, Skyray, and a Secondary Force. ( a Primary Force with a Geodetic wing)

I went over to the Intermediate pits and saw the following: Oriental, Hurricane, Banshee,  Miss Kathy, Tang Machine, Pathfinder, Twister, Ring Excaliber, Super Super Ringmaster, Cardinal, Teosawki, Tutor 2, Saturn jr. Magician, Flite Streak, Hawker Hunter.

The Beginner and Intermediate guys are more willing to talk. I had a Philly Flier T-shirt and Hat on, and a couple of Philly Fliers asked me if I was a member. I  told them no, but that I had stayed in a Holiday Inn Select last night!
Several other people asked me the same question about the  P.F. membership today, and I gave them the same answer. Fortunately, they all thought it was funny.

Over at the Advanced / Expert pits, I saw the following airplanes: P-40, Red Ringmaster, Profile Nobler, Hawker Typhoon, Cardinal, Fancherized Twister, Ringmaster, Profile Oriental, Profile Cavalier, Banshee, Twin Pathfinder (electric) P-38 Biplane, Big Magician, Limitation, and a Big Mooney. Some of the airplanes had been removed from the pits because the owners had already flown their two  officials.

I ran into a bunch of old friends this year out at the field; Big Art and Dennis, Roy and Joan Decamera, Jack and Shirley Sheeks, Team Phelps, and Larry and Ginger Scarinzi. There were a lot of others whose names I can't recall right now.

Brodak's supplied 3 air conditioned porta potty's this year and a whole lot of normal one.

Congratulations to Carl C's Beginner win!  Gonna have to learn inverted and fly with the Intermediates now!!

Someone tell Tim S that that was the nicest Sterling P-51D I have ever seen!   ;D

The Model Engine Collector's Association president (Bill Moherbacher) had a shelter set up in the driveway to the contest. He had some engines on display, and a test stand where he was going to run a GHQ Aero .53 engine.
GHQ's usually don't run, and if you find one for sale it is usually in like new condition. (because it has never been run!) Bill said that MECA is holding steady at around 400 members.

Joe Gilbert won Classic Expert flying the late Mike Donovan's Tucker Special. Mike gave Joe a lot of his airplanes and told Joe to give them to deserving modelers. After Joe won Expert, he let Paul Taylor fly the airplane, and gave it to him a few minutes later. Joe is a super nice guy who keeps his promises to his friends.

Buzz Brodak invited fellow Gluedobber Tom Martin and me into the house to see Ben and Jerry, the two Main Coon Cats. One is white and brown, and the other is white and orange. They weigh about 18 pounds apiece, are 5 years old, and are brothers. One is friendly, and the other is a little standoffish. Great Cats!

We could hear the Cicadas singing loudly in the trees. There are a lot of them, and they fly around land on people, and get swatted off. They are pests.

I spent a pieces of the day talking to Jack and Shirley Sheeks, and Dennis and Big Art Adamissin.

The weather was nice today. I had a great time!

Wed. June 15, day 3 of the contest.

The contest C.D's are: Will Davis and Mark Weise.

Old Time Stunt:

Phase 1 (no  flaps)

Beginner - 0 entries   Intermediate - 15 entries    Advanced - 6 entries     Expert - 18 entries

Phase 2 (flapped)

Beginner - 0 entries    Intermediate - 4 entries  Advanced - 6 entries     Expert - 1 entry

Judges

Intermediate phase 1&2 - Pete Hermans - Doug Benedetti

Advanced  phase 1&2 - Bob Zambelli - Paul Taylor

Expert phase 1&2  - Bob Hudak and Jim Lynch

The Intermediate pit: E Super Clown - Ringmaster (4 each ) - Pollywog Chief (the only Chief that is OTS legal)
Nobler - Viking - (3 each) - Vampire.

The Mirror Meet Award is given by De Hill  and Elwyn Aud to the OTS airplane that most closely resembles the airplanes that flew in the early Mirror Meets. There were no  appearance points given, and no BOM rules for the  early Mirror Meets. The award is a pith helmet used by the judges  in the Tulsa Mirror Meet re-creations.

The winning airplane this year was a Veco Pollywog Chief that was built by the late Harry Freeland, the first president of the Philly Fliers. The airplane was originally finished in clear dope and decorated with colored Japanese tissue. It was being flown in honor of Harry Freeland. The pilot of the plane and MM award winner was Bruce Stecker of the Philly Fliers.

Advanced - Expert pits :Ringmaster - Upstart -Viking - Big Job - Jamison Special - Smoothy - Big Wing - Stuka Stunt - Humongous - Galloping Comedian.

I probably missed some OTS airplanes that were not present for some reason.

Elwyn and I watched the Big Wing fly. It was highly impressive.

Dan Banjock and Rick Huff, the  pilot of the Upstart were attacked by large numbers of  Cicadas. They don't bite, but are areal distraction when you are trying to fly a pattern and the Cicada's are landing on you and crawling around! Did I mention that they are pests?

Doug and Mickie Taffinder showed up; it was good to see them again! I haven't seen them in years.

Dan Banjock flew the Giant Slobinator. It was highly impressive.

I saw Nikki, the Control Line World editor leading a forklift along that was carrying a porta potty. This was unusual.

The three air conditioned porta potty's are mounted on a trailer. Two are for girls, on for guys. They have a sink, paper towels a trashcan and a flush toilet.

Highly recommended.

I spent some time this afternoon talking with an old friend, Roy Decamera. After talking for a couple of hours, we went on a electric cart ride and saw the MECA president Bill Mohrbacher running a GHQ Aero .53 ignition model engine. This is almost a miraculous event.

Ahh yes, Tempest. I actually considered that but had assumed this one might be another example of the current Rud/Werwage design. Looking closer I see now that it does have the Tempest fin/rudder outline.

The Upstart (white w/ blue trim) belongs to Rick Huff of Randolph Vermont.  He is the PAMPA district 1 director.  Scratch built, Fox 35 power.

The guy on the right is Dennis Adamisin with his Big Wing.  Dennis is the current PAMPA president and Nats CD

Day 4,  Thurs. June 16

Ringmaster - Firecat - Super Firecat stunt competition: 21 entries.

Elwyn took some pictures, but I don't know how many he will post. There were about 13 Ringmasters, 3 Firecats, and 1 electric Firecat.

Speed limit combat - 17 entries - many foamies.
A whole lot if Cicadas were attracted by the noise and flew wildly around the combat area. There were some great matches flown.

I talked to Roy Glenn, and asked about a Tulsa guy who has been gone for many years. His name was Dave Pariso. Roy said that Dave flew speed limit combat in New England for several years. He had good equipment , and was a good flier. He dropped off the radar after getting married. So now I know.

On top of the hill in the paved circle a 100 lap LA .25 race was held.  A huge number of Cicadas  were attracted by the noise, and flew around like a swarm of bees. Paul Smith, one of the pitmen had clothing on (or something) that attracted 50 - 70 Cicadas who landed on him.  They landed on his face, neck, arms, shirt, and pants.
Somehow, Paul managed to pit successfully. I think that Will Hubin took a picture of Paul with the Cicadas on him.

It started raining around 11 am. A lot of the contestants headed to Brodak's Hobby shop, and from there over to the super mart to buy food. After it stopped raining, We went back to the contest site.

Precision Aerobatic appearance judging started around 3:30. Elwyn took a lot of pictures which I think He'll post.

The weinie wagon is run by Nikki Albert and her mother Vickie Albert. They do a splendid job and hand out good food with good cheer. John Brodak supplies food at cost (or sometimes under) Soft drinks are 50 cents - hot dogs 50 cents, pizza 50 cents a slice, coffee 30 cents, donuts, 30 cents. Heckuva deal!

Elwyn and I left the field at around 4 pm and returned to the motel because another round of rain was coming in.

Day 4,  Thurs. June 16

I generally don't mind bugs, but 50-70 cicadas ON me would probably push me to the point of wigging out(!)

Thursday, June 26; day 4 of the contest

PA Stunt - cloudy and foggy day; low wind to start

Beginner - 13 contestants  Intermediate - 35 contestants Advanced - 25 contestants Expert - 22 contestants

I talked to Denny Adamissin, who had the prototype of the Big Art  stunter. it is a good looking 56" wingspan built up airplane that has all of Big Art's recommended design features. The empennage looks like a VECO Chief. Hopefully, it will be kitted soon.

Airplanes found in the Intermediate pit:

Nobler - Tenacious -Vector - Tutor 2 -Secondary Force - ARF Nobler- Ringmaster - Stilletto - E Cavalier - E Stalker.

All  the guys didn't have their airplanes in the pits in the early morning, since there were 35 entries, and some wouldn't fly until afternoon. I saw a combat ship flying the AMA pattern; very unusual.

Advanced / Expert pits:

Vector- PRO-BOM - Miss Emilia - Bearcat - Twister - Cardinal - Legacy - Legacy E - Pathfinder - Twin Pathfinder E - Pathfinder E - Cheeta - Road Runner - "Bout Time - Fancherized Twister - SL3 - F-86 d- Velvet.

I went up on the hill to see the Beginner pits but they were in deep grass, and I knew the Cicadas were waiting. I could hear them singing in the trees. So I didn't go there.

Judges:

Beginner: Ted Heinritz - Dalton Hammett
Intermediate: Bernie Suhamski - Dick Houser
Advanced - Wayne Robinson - Linda Brainard
Expert: Phil Spillman - Ken Armish - Doug Taffinder

More later.

I went over to the scale pits and saw the following airplanes:
B-17  Japanese Tony - Sky Raider - P-38 Shoestring - B-25 - B-29 - Bearcat - PT 19 - Super Constellation - Pond Racer - Stormovick - DC -6 - C-124.

Scale was flown off the asphalt circle. Note: Most 1/2a scale planes do not land well on asphalt or grass!

Scale Judges: John Brodak - James Duckworth

Scale entries: 23

1/2a scale entries: 13

Junkyard Wars: We left before it was over, and I don't know who won. The Canadians put on a great show. Dan Banjock's biplane had an inflight structural failure and crash that was fabulous to watch. I don't know if it helped him or hurt him. Maybe someone else can fill in on how it came out.

John and Buzz Brodak put on their free feed at the 20th annual Brodak fun fly. Buzz and her bevy of female helpers dished out fried chicken, barbecue, slaw, potato salad, fruit cups, vegetable cups, jamboli, all kind of desserts and cold drinks.

It is incredibly generous of John and Buzz Brodak to do this year after year.
