Sunday was a practice day. The weather was good except for a gusty swirling breeze which discouraged flying.
The contests starts tomorrow.
-
Most of today's flying was done by 17 year cicadas. I only shot two flights and don't start getting in the groove till about 5 or ten flights. A great day for shooting static shots and saying hi to everybody and resting up from the trip.
-
Thanks for the pics and the update Elwyn, looking forward to many more this week! #^
-
It's so great to see BIG Art getting around. Thanks for the photo.

Today's events were:
Profile Precision Aerobatics: Beginner( 16 entries) - Intermediate (21 entries)- Advanced (28 entries)-
Expert (18 entries).
Judges:
Beginner: Price Reese and Dennis Moritz
Intermediate: John Tate and John Simpson
Advanced: Joe Gilbert and Tim Stagg
Expert: Dick Carville and Wayne Robinson
Foxberg racing: Sportsman and Expert. (Afternoon)
Carrier: Starts monday at 8 am, runs over to tuesday.
.15 carrier- Profile carrier - Sportsman carrier - Carrier 1 and 2 combined.
I went over to the beginner pits and looked at the different types of airplanes over there. I saw the following; Super Clown, Cardinal, Tutor 2, F-51, Skyray, and a Secondary Force. ( a Primary Force with a Geodetic wing)
I went over to the Intermediate pits and saw the following: Oriental, Hurricane, Banshee, Miss Kathy, Tang Machine, Pathfinder, Twister, Ring Excaliber, Super Super Ringmaster, Cardinal, Teosawki, Tutor 2, Saturn jr. Magician, Flite Streak, Hawker Hunter.
The Beginner and Intermediate guys are more willing to talk. I had a Philly Flier T-shirt and Hat on, and a couple of Philly Fliers asked me if I was a member. I told them no, but that I had stayed in a Holiday Inn Select last night!
Several other people asked me the same question about the P.F. membership today, and I gave them the same answer. Fortunately, they all thought it was funny.
Over at the Advanced / Expert pits, I saw the following airplanes: P-40, Red Ringmaster, Profile Nobler, Hawker Typhoon, Cardinal, Fancherized Twister, Ringmaster, Profile Oriental, Profile Cavalier, Banshee, Twin Pathfinder (electric) P-38 Biplane, Big Magician, Limitation, and a Big Mooney. Some of the airplanes had been removed from the pits because the owners had already flown their two officials.

The Model Engine Collector's Association president (Bill Moherbacher) had a shelter set up in the driveway to the contest. He had some engines on display, and a test stand where he was going to run a GHQ Aero .53 engine.
GHQ's usually don't run, and if you find one for sale it is usually in like new condition. (because it has never been run!) Bill said that MECA is holding steady at around 400 members.
Joe Gilbert won Classic Expert flying the late Mike Donovan's Tucker Special. Mike gave Joe a lot of his airplanes and told Joe to give them to deserving modelers. After Joe won Expert, he let Paul Taylor fly the airplane, and gave it to him a few minutes later. Joe is a super nice guy who keeps his promises to his friends.
Buzz Brodak invited fellow Gluedobber Tom Martin and me into the house to see Ben and Jerry, the two Main Coon Cats. One is white and brown, and the other is white and orange. They weigh about 18 pounds apiece, are 5 years old, and are brothers. One is friendly, and the other is a little standoffish. Great Cats!
We could hear the Cicadas singing loudly in the trees. There are a lot of them, and they fly around land on people, and get swatted off. They are pests.
I spent a pieces of the day talking to Jack and Shirley Sheeks, and Dennis and Big Art Adamissin.
The weather was nice today. I had a great time!

Wed. June 15, day 3 of the contest.
The contest C.D's are: Will Davis and Mark Weise.
Old Time Stunt:
Phase 1 (no flaps)
Beginner - 0 entries Intermediate - 15 entries Advanced - 6 entries Expert - 18 entries
Phase 2 (flapped)
Beginner - 0 entries Intermediate - 4 entries Advanced - 6 entries Expert - 1 entry
Judges
Intermediate phase 1&2 - Pete Hermans - Doug Benedetti
Advanced phase 1&2 - Bob Zambelli - Paul Taylor
Expert phase 1&2 - Bob Hudak and Jim Lynch
The Intermediate pit: E Super Clown - Ringmaster (4 each ) - Pollywog Chief (the only Chief that is OTS legal)
Nobler - Viking - (3 each) - Vampire.
The Mirror Meet Award is given by De Hill and Elwyn Aud to the OTS airplane that most closely resembles the airplanes that flew in the early Mirror Meets. There were no appearance points given, and no BOM rules for the early Mirror Meets. The award is a pith helmet used by the judges in the Tulsa Mirror Meet re-creations.
The winning airplane this year was a Veco Pollywog Chief that was built by the late Harry Freeland, the first president of the Philly Fliers. The airplane was originally finished in clear dope and decorated with colored Japanese tissue. It was being flown in honor of Harry Freeland. The pilot of the plane and MM award winner was Bruce Stecker of the Philly Fliers.
Advanced - Expert pits :Ringmaster - Upstart -Viking - Big Job - Jamison Special - Smoothy - Big Wing - Stuka Stunt - Humongous - Galloping Comedian.
I probably missed some OTS airplanes that were not present for some reason.
Elwyn and I watched the Big Wing fly. It was highly impressive.
Dan Banjock and Rick Huff, the pilot of the Upstart were attacked by large numbers of Cicadas. They don't bite, but are areal distraction when you are trying to fly a pattern and the Cicada's are landing on you and crawling around! Did I mention that they are pests?
Doug and Mickie Taffinder showed up; it was good to see them again! I haven't seen them in years.
Dan Banjock flew the Giant Slobinator. It was highly impressive.
I saw Nikki, the Control Line World editor leading a forklift along that was carrying a porta potty. This was unusual.
The three air conditioned porta potty's are mounted on a trailer. Two are for girls, on for guys. They have a sink, paper towels a trashcan and a flush toilet.
Highly recommended.
-
I spent some time this afternoon talking with an old friend, Roy Decamera. After talking for a couple of hours, we went on a electric cart ride and saw the MECA president Bill Mohrbacher running a GHQ Aero .53 ignition model engine. This is almost a miraculous event.

Ahh yes, Tempest. I actually considered that but had assumed this one might be another example of the current Rud/Werwage design. Looking closer I see now that it does have the Tempest fin/rudder outline.
-
The Upstart (white w/ blue trim) belongs to Rick Huff of Randolph Vermont. He is the PAMPA district 1 director. Scratch built, Fox 35 power.
The guy on the right is Dennis Adamisin with his Big Wing. Dennis is the current PAMPA president and Nats CD

Thanks Scott.
Yeah, I know about the learning to fly inverted thing for sure.
I got the perfect plane for it too.
Got to meet a lot of great folks there. Had a blast.
Got to meet and talk with Dennis Adamisin and compare notes on both our new power system set ups.
Also got to meet and talk with Tom Morris. Great guy to talk with. ALSO, he is going to pick with you about a
certain group of planes......................... LOL

Any thing new to report?
did the rains come as predicted by the weather guys on TV?

Day 4, Thurs. June 16
Ringmaster - Firecat - Super Firecat stunt competition: 21 entries.
Elwyn took some pictures, but I don't know how many he will post. There were about 13 Ringmasters, 3 Firecats, and 1 electric Firecat.
Speed limit combat - 17 entries - many foamies.
A whole lot if Cicadas were attracted by the noise and flew wildly around the combat area. There were some great matches flown.
I talked to Roy Glenn, and asked about a Tulsa guy who has been gone for many years. His name was Dave Pariso. Roy said that Dave flew speed limit combat in New England for several years. He had good equipment , and was a good flier. He dropped off the radar after getting married. So now I know.
On top of the hill in the paved circle a 100 lap LA .25 race was held. A huge number of Cicadas were attracted by the noise, and flew around like a swarm of bees. Paul Smith, one of the pitmen had clothing on (or something) that attracted 50 - 70 Cicadas who landed on him. They landed on his face, neck, arms, shirt, and pants.
Somehow, Paul managed to pit successfully. I think that Will Hubin took a picture of Paul with the Cicadas on him.
It started raining around 11 am. A lot of the contestants headed to Brodak's Hobby shop, and from there over to the super mart to buy food. After it stopped raining, We went back to the contest site.
Precision Aerobatic appearance judging started around 3:30. Elwyn took a lot of pictures which I think He'll post.
The weinie wagon is run by Nikki Albert and her mother Vickie Albert. They do a splendid job and hand out good food with good cheer. John Brodak supplies food at cost (or sometimes under) Soft drinks are 50 cents - hot dogs 50 cents, pizza 50 cents a slice, coffee 30 cents, donuts, 30 cents. Heckuva deal!
Elwyn and I left the field at around 4 pm and returned to the motel because another round of rain was coming in.

I generally don't mind bugs, but 50-70 cicadas ON me would probably push me to the point of wigging out(!)

Thursday, June 26; day 4 of the contest
PA Stunt - cloudy and foggy day; low wind to start
Beginner - 13 contestants Intermediate - 35 contestants Advanced - 25 contestants Expert - 22 contestants
I talked to Denny Adamissin, who had the prototype of the Big Art stunter. it is a good looking 56" wingspan built up airplane that has all of Big Art's recommended design features. The empennage looks like a VECO Chief. Hopefully, it will be kitted soon.
Airplanes found in the Intermediate pit:
Nobler - Tenacious -Vector - Tutor 2 -Secondary Force - ARF Nobler- Ringmaster - Stilletto - E Cavalier - E Stalker.
All the guys didn't have their airplanes in the pits in the early morning, since there were 35 entries, and some wouldn't fly until afternoon. I saw a combat ship flying the AMA pattern; very unusual.
Advanced / Expert pits:
Vector- PRO-BOM - Miss Emilia - Bearcat - Twister - Cardinal - Legacy - Legacy E - Pathfinder - Twin Pathfinder E - Pathfinder E - Cheeta - Road Runner - "Bout Time - Fancherized Twister - SL3 - F-86 d- Velvet.
I went up on the hill to see the Beginner pits but they were in deep grass, and I knew the Cicadas were waiting. I could hear them singing in the trees. So I didn't go there.
Judges:
Beginner: Ted Heinritz - Dalton Hammett
Intermediate: Bernie Suhamski - Dick Houser
Advanced - Wayne Robinson - Linda Brainard
Expert: Phil Spillman - Ken Armish - Doug Taffinder
More later.

I went over to the scale pits and saw the following airplanes:
B-17 Japanese Tony - Sky Raider - P-38 Shoestring - B-25 - B-29 - Bearcat - PT 19 - Super Constellation - Pond Racer - Stormovick - DC -6 - C-124.
Scale was flown off the asphalt circle. Note: Most 1/2a scale planes do not land well on asphalt or grass!
Scale Judges: John Brodak - James Duckworth
Scale entries: 23
1/2a scale entries: 13
Junkyard Wars: We left before it was over, and I don't know who won. The Canadians put on a great show. Dan Banjock's biplane had an inflight structural failure and crash that was fabulous to watch. I don't know if it helped him or hurt him. Maybe someone else can fill in on how it came out.
-
Junk yard wars, et al.

John and Buzz Brodak put on their free feed at the 20th annual Brodak fun fly. Buzz and her bevy of female helpers dished out fried chicken, barbecue, slaw, potato salad, fruit cups, vegetable cups, jamboli, all kind of desserts and cold drinks.
It is incredibly generous of John and Buzz Brodak to do this year after year.
-
Thank you Elwyn and De for all the pics and info. It is much appreciated by us at homers. Looks like everyone is having a great time outside of the locusts. Tell Joe and Tim I said Hi.

Elwyn and I thank you for your kind words.

I believe it is an Adamusko design.

Looks and sounds like I missed a great one. Hopefully the coming year will be better. Also hope all had fun as well as a good time. Now you all have a safe trip home and I will wait for the report in Control Line World. Thanks to See and Elwyn for the reports and pictures, maybe see you in Tulsa. Fingers crossed. H^^
-
Yeah me too, Doc. But living vicariously through my pals will have to do. I just talked to Will and Wayne and arranged a hit on John's hobby shop for some choice goods to bring back for me.
I hope we get to see more scoreboard pics. Wayne reports he scored over 500 in one of the PA events. I'm pretty sure that's his first 500 plus score, though he pretended he didn't remember for sure Lol.
Everybody be safe on that tired drive home.
Rusty
-
Hey anyone by chance take a shot of the Advance scoreboard? I had to leave early and curious how I placed. First time in Advance and there were some great pilots. Felt funny flying a Twister/Fox 35 when everyone else had some great planes. Need to remedy that before next year.

We stopped at the contest for about three hours Saturday but had to hit the road shortly after 10. Here are a few pics.

Jayster,
No board shot but #1 is of your bird landing!!!

-
Thank you very much De and Elwyn for your excellent coverage of the Brodak Contest. You helped us that simply couldn't be there enjoy it vicariously through your reports and pictures. Excellent job.
Makes me even more proud to be a 'Dobber!!
-
De and Elwyn. Thanks for the daily commentary and photos. It means a lot to those of us who cannot attend. Thanks and safe travels home.
-
Thank you Elwyn and De!!!
For me, a week at Brodak's goes by in a blur.
When I get home, I look for your photos first to see
what I missed.
The entire event wouldn't be the same without you.
Many many thanks! - Keith Morgan
-
Here are a few more assorted photos. The Pathfinder reminds me a bit of a Mike Keville painting.
-
Saturday, June 18 - The last day.
The day started cool and calm; the only flying left to do was the second round of PA. (all classes)
I had a good talk with Charles Carter, who flew out to Brodak's from Escondido, CA. He borrowed a plane from Jon Wright to fly in competition.
I also had a good conversation with Big Art and Denny Adamissin, Sparky, Doug Taffinder, and Wesley Dick who had a stunt ship named Velvet with slotted flaps. I'm sure Elwyn has a picture of it somewhere.
There were a lot more Electrics this year. I thought about converting to Elactric for a little while, and then went over and bought a gallon of Powermaster 10/22 from Bob Krug. Who was a Huey doorgunner in Vietnam.
The Brodak meet has a huge amount of John's employees, part time help and volunteers who make it run.
Here is the Tabulating crew: ( or Central Command if you prefer)
Sandy Bruce, Charley Ward, Anna and Tom Noska, Ronda Stewart, and Rebecca Conklin.
Runners: These were teenagers who ran scoresheets.
Chelsea Hershenberger, Janna King, Hunter Stewart, and Joanna Pullem.
The grounds crew kept the lawns mowed, and emptied the trash cans and sacks, of which there were many. They are:
Brian Ball, George Connely, and Sam Schwartz.
There were fewer Cicadas on the field today, but you could still hear them singing in the woods.
Flying ended at 10 am, and Elwyn and I hit the road back to Tulsa. We were besieged by suicidal
Cicadas who hit our windshield through West Virginia and part of Ohio. I have read about the 17 year Cicadas all my life, but I have never experienced them before. Once is enough!

I see a good turnout at the Brodaks. Was anyone flying OTS? (Ringmasters don't count). Or was there even an OTS category?
Don't recognize any names. (But we are pretty isolated out here.)

Hi Floyd,
Go back to page 1, Day 3. OTS information is listed there.

I saw a good number of Vikings, 2 Big Jobs, a Big Wing, several Firecats, 2 galloping Comedians, at least one Barnstormer, one Jamison Special, one El Diablo, one Upstart, at least two Smoothies, and a lot of Ringmasters if you wish to count them. Thirty Five entries if i counted right.

A lot of guys wonder why Elwyn doesn't like to take scoreboard photos.
Elwyn says that he doesn't like to take pictures of anything that goes less than 55 mph !
-
Hoping everyone got home safe.
( That also means you John Miller.)
Could someone please post the
Expert CLPA results.
With all the airplanes and camp stuff
there was no room left for my camera.
Thanks! - K.

In case anyone is wondering, Joe Gilbert pulled a mussel in his arm on Thursday and wasn't able to fly the PA rounds. Tough break..
-
I felt bad for Joe, hope he gets well enough to make a NATS appearance. Bob R. tell Tom I tried to get a couple friends to go in on buying him out, but their arms are too short and I needed enough money to get home😕

During the OS .25 LA Race everyone was swarmed by Cicadas!!
Here's Paul Smith trying to refuel/ start. Ugh!
They flocked to the circle with three models in the Air.

Get well soon Joe!

Looks like every one was having fun. I was wondering if John Miller had showed up? I saw he scratched on one board. Any one know or seen him.
Gordy
-
Gordan,
Yes, John was there and we talked about the Twin Pathfinder.
Rick
-
John took a bit of a tumble in or out of his motor home I heard. Hand was bandaged and I think he said he had a broken bone and that his knee was a bit banged up. This is most likely why he scratched. Seemed to be in good spirits despite the setback.

Elwyn and I had a fairly uneventual drive back to Tulsa last Saturday and Sunday. We went 80 most of the time, and people were passing us. We ran out of the Cicada windshield splashers in Ohio. The detour route through St. Louis from I-70 to I-44 must have been laid out by some politicians son in law.
We made it to 60 miles south of St. Louis on Saturday, got a motel, and arrived in Tulsa around 12 noon on sunday.

De Hill did some reporting on OTS entrants. Thanks, De.
Did anyone record the OTS scores?
Floyd
-
De and Elwyn, glad you guys made it home ok. Thanks again for all you did for us. Tell Joe to get well soon. You too John Miller. Control line people are still the best people.
-
Fabulous Brodak 20. Buzz and John announced 20 more. Part of the joy this time around was John's renewed health and energy. As many of you know, Brodak 20 was originally announced to be the last. We Control Line enthusiasts have a reprieve. More and more Brodaks to happen. Hang in there John. A big thank you to all involved.
Philly Fliers won the Club Participation award. Second year in a row. There were a lot of us there. We tabulated something like 15 trophies. Wow. Tottering seniors winning their share. Congratulations to everyone. For the Philly Fliers every year begins at Brodak.
-
De Hill did some reporting on OTS entrants. Thanks, De.
Did anyone record the OTS scores?
Floyd
I checked and I had actually shot some pics of the results.
Brodak now has all the results posted on their website.

Was Elwyn the only one there with a camera?
-
Elwyn does a terrific job....I wager that you could reach out to him and he'll produce a CD
Sparky will have videos as well
Have fun!
-
Thanks for the kind words. Will Hubin was shooting lots of pics and I'm sure you'll be seeing his great pics in a few magazines. I'm putting a bunch of pics up on Photobucket but it will be a few weeks getting it all sorted out. Did get a good start since i had a couple of days before I had to return to work. Right now Photobucket's sorting function is kaput so you can't change the order of the pics to put them in any logical arrangement.

Big THANK YOU to John & Buzz Brodak for sharing their yard for another gathering. John's crew also work their tails off. No visit is complete without going to the factory, the hobby shop, and then next door to the lunch counter at Brodak's Market.
Chatted with old friends, met some new friends, reminisced about too many friends lost. If there was a common thread through the conversations it was that everyone is genuinely worried about CL modeling 10 or even 5 years from now. I have been hearing that CL is dying ever since I started flying in the early 1960's. For the first time the words are starting to ring true, not just for CL but for Aeromodeling in general. The problem is we need to find a way to make CL "younger". Perhaps events like Joe Nall & Brodak Fly-In are part of the answer?
THANKS for all who stopped to chat with Big Art. He is moving kinda slow these days - but he is moving! He gets re-energized by hanging out with the gang and he had a great time.
A belated THANK YOU to De & Elwyn for the daily blogs from the field.
Note to WWARBIRD, Elwyn & Will Hubin were shooting pix all over the field, Sparky & crew had videocams all over the place. By comparison, the rest of us are hacks! Sounds like Elwyn & Sparky have plans to post more stuff soon, Will usually has a write-up in MA...
-
Big Art is looking good for what he has been through. Hopefully see you all next year. I remember first meeting him at team trials in St Louis many years ago. Dennis your parents were a great couple and am proud to say I met and knew them.
-
Thank You for your time and efforts , Very fine looking airplanes and sounds like a great time at this event , Maybe some day I will be able to attend ~> Congrads to ever one that entered and the bugs sound like real pest that would drive me ~^ Eric
