Title: 2015 NATS Coverage
Post by: Dave_Trible on June 26, 2015, 08:47:34 AM
It's that time once again to begin the ramp up to the premier event in aeromodeling.  Part of that is this digital record of words and deeds that make up the Nats.  Sadly this year we'll miss our dear friend and mentor Bob Gieske . If possible I'm sure he will be wherever the flying is going on.
Recently we've had the toasted Nats, the frozen Nats and if the weather guessers are to be heard,  maybe the drowned Nats.  T-storms Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.  Better bring a snorkel!
Yes here is the place for the teasers, wheezers, and geezers to have their say.  Please remember this will be a part the permanent record so keep it upbeat.  The betting window has been opened.
As per my custom I will travel Thursday prior and will be on the turf Friday.

Let the game begin...

Any chance you have an unlimited data plan with a 4g network?

UStream live videos would be nice to see. 😉

Paul I do have unlimited data and LTE so even better.  However I've never done the live video.  I'll try to educate myself some on it and we'll see.  Would prefer to do that on something other than my 5S.

Hey Dave
The 5s would be better than nothing. I thought the UStream worked great. The cameraman learned a few things.

Give me a call if you need help getting it setup. Phone is listed in the PAMPA directory. Or shoot me a PM.

It's a lot easer than flying the pattern. 😁

Hopefully not a wet NATS like we had not too many years ago.   When I got there they were pulling vehicles out of the combat area.  I think there was a picture of someone in a row boat on the AMA field.  Not the lake in front of headquarters.

Just my two cents worth, I don't have the time to watch all the videos and far prefer the manner in which Dave did last year's nats.  I can set down, read quickly and see what's happening, and then be back in the shop in a few minutes.
Also, no disrespect to Paul and his herculean effort at Brodaks, but I found no connection to seeing those reports because they had no personal information in them about the participants.  I saw folks I know, but just "ships passing in the night" type of things.  Maybe both types of reports could happen, but that's a lot of work, either way.
Again, no disrespect intended, just my personal preferences.

Will,  to update where we are right now I don't think the program will change much.  I've talked some with both Paul and Chris and done some research myself about streaming video.  Given the lack of time and trying to make up a bunch of practice time I'm not going to try to take on a new hobby right now.  The way Paul did this is worth a try but as some add-on to the thread as time permits.  I'll get the app and be prepared for the 5S.  Chris and I may collaborate on some additional video.  To do this as  I would like to requires a fair amount of equipment,  I already have the HD cam and MacBook Pro, wifi hotspot etc. but would still need at least $500 more stuff. Them I'm tied to a spot with the stuff and need another vehicle to haul it.  I'd most rather have Chris or anyone else upload whatever video they gather to the thread.  That way I can get around and simply do commentary.  As long as I  am competing myself it's going to be pretty hard to do much more than I do already.  Chris and I will be talking more and see.

Dave, I was amazed that you had, or rather, took the time to do what you did last year.  You are to be commended for that and there should be some kind of award for such dedication.  Chris is also going to be competing, but he's such a high energy dude that he can multi-task in his sleep.  (Ask him about his nats with the "fab-four" his first year there!)  He's first class, as I am sure Paul is, too.  You are included in that category as well.
Thanks for helping me be there this year.

Current open stunt entry is 39, with 14 Advanced. 39 is a pretty big number for pre-entries, which are frequently only half. I would guess that there will be 15-20 more in Open and 10 more in ADV, so that's a lot of people.

   Stunt IS NOT dying!

From the dearth of pre-Nats banter here, you wouldn't think anybody's going.   Maybe people are put off by the drying up of the vortex generator supply.  I'll go, but I might not take my good airplane.

Derek I'm not sure now.  They ARE flying RC scale aerobatics on site 3 , then Pylon over the weekend so maybe the pad can be used- but I doubt before Friday.  Guess we'll find out.  I knew they moved CL scale but not RC.   Wonder how much interference we'll have on finals Friday and Saturday when they'll be flying scale on site 3.  Overflight issues again I bet.

I just read the NASA newsbrief, they are saying their one manuevor is forbidden for their first round of scale so they won't interfere with the L pad.  Here's what is in their latest newsbrief:
"After much thought and discussion with the NASA board and with AMA, I have decided that we will eliminate the Figure 8 as a mandatory maneuver this year in R/C Scale. The contestants will need to add another optional maneuver to replace it.

For the first round, the Figure 8 will not be allowed at all. I will instruct the judges to notify a contestant to change the maneuver if the 8 has been included on their score sheet for the first round.

We will have an extended lunch break on Saturday to make sure the control line guys are finished before the start of the second round.

Starting with the second round and every round thereafter, the Figure 8 can be used as an optional maneuver (for those of you who like to fly it). Hopefully by the second round the Control Line guys should be finished at the L-pad and we can resume our normal flight patterns.

During the first round, we still need to be cognizant to not over fly the L-pad as much as possible. If you cannot keep from over flying the L-pad, at least keep the aircraft as high as possible in that area. I will notify the contestant if I get complaints from the Control Line area about the over flights. I will make the call on an individual basis as to what needs to be done."

Now, back to me, (Will), I am not sure of the date they're talking about, it might just be during the Walker cup, but it seems to me if they'll do this for scale, they should accomodate stunt for the whole week, dontcha think?

Whatever guys, fly safe and enjoy the nats.
Everyone enjoy the nats, fly safe!!

Layla can draw for me.

Can't we just use your random number generator for the draw?  It would go much faster and Layla would not be implicated in the outcome.

Good idea Steve. Poor layla is going to have to draw for everyone. I will probably still end up 1st both rounds.  HB~>

That's still not as bad a flight order as I drew last time I was there. I drew 1st in three of the four qualifying rounds. Can't even blame Layla for that one.

First on-site report:  I hit town about an hour ago and went out to AMA.  Good news and bad news;  good news is we will be able to use the LPad starting tonight although it's blocked off right now.  Bad news is the grass area is sopping wet- standing water in spots.  I talked to the full time grounds keeper and he says it's too soft for the grass road in there and hopes it will dry enough he can mow it again by Sunday.  He mowed last week but said it's rained here pretty solid for three weeks (sounds like home).  If you are going to fly there you might have to park on gravel somewhere and carry it in.  Overcast here now and 68 degrees.  Don't think Brenda is here yet.  About all for tonight.
Found out Days Inn thought it chick to remove mini fridges and microwaves so off to Walmart to buy something to cook my meals in....and water. Have a heck of a nice day.

Raining here now.  Matt the explanation I got was they had a limited number to be had upon request.  Some corporate group (maybe Trump) requested them all.  If you need to heat your beans bring them to 215.  That resident just got a great new Hamilton Beach that I might not find room to haul home.

Then we can have a super-long thread on how computer-generated random numbers are really not "random" and favor certain "selected" candidates, after which I try to acquire some Americium 241 and a GeLi detector, and then have Tim Wescott can lecture us all how we are using it incorrectly! Heading to morning practice and today may be a little more 'iffy' with the weather as pop up showers all day are on the menu.  I expect most everyone else coming will show at the field by afternoon.  Today is beginner I believe and though the grass area had dried out quite a bit, overnight showers will make that a wet sock morning.

I was fiddling with the linkage on one side and got CA in the hinge.  I disconnected the tabs and taped them to the flaps.  The airplane flew better. I've since had them connected and disconnected again.  I suspect that they have more effect around neutral than they do at higher control deflections.  I'll hook them up again if I can come up with a more clever linkage.

Well, since you mention it, going from random events to random numbers isn't an entirely trivial process.  It's not that you can't make what you're suggesting work, but you can't just rope together some radioactive isotope, a counter, and some algorithm written by a randomly-chosen grad student and end up with Random Number Nirvana.

After a break I got back out for the evening practice but it got pretty windy and only a few brave souls chose to put up flights.  There were some new arrivals.  The weather folks have issued a flash flood advisory here from 5 am Monday to 5 am Tuesday.  As it was a huge tractor/ trailer tow truck had to pull about a dozen cars out of the mud at the grass fields.  With this forecast we might 1) not get too much practice tomorrow and 2) end up having to do the Classic and Old Time events on the LPad Tuesday.  We'll see.

Got the chance to finally meet Bill and Chris "Mr. 125 flights in two weeks" Rud this afternoon.  Chris said Bill could only stay until Tuesday so he's just flying classic this year.

Haven't gotten the chance to take any video yet, I've been busy practicing.  I'll definitely be getting video during classic on Tuesday, and officials during the rest of the week.  The weather looks very iffy for the next two days, so who knows how much practice we all are going to get.

After the pilots meeting about a dozen of us hit Pizza King then made our way back to the field.  After the deluge the wind stayed up the rest of the evening so very little happened.  Due to the added water ( the pond in front of AMA headquarters is out of its banks and very nearly over flooding the road) the choice was made to hold old time and classic on the LPad using two circles and leaving two for Open practice.  With pop up showers in the forecast it could be a long day getting two rounds in but it's far better than the quagmire in the grass.

The appearance judging is part of the Nationals which is the subject of this thread.  Rules about appearance judging are not.
Charles if you want to know about the incident in question you can start another thread and I will be happy to tell you about it as I'm sure Keith probably will to.

Sorry Randy, but I disagree with you.  Appearance judging IS part of the nats.  Rules weren't mentioned, and I feel it was a very natural question for someone not in the know to ask.
Seeing those beautiful planes at the 180 building is the premier event to many who may, or may not be there for the first time; and it is quite a spectacle. (sp?)  Thus, part of the nats that needs to be highlighted, at least in my opinion and definitely involves appearance points.
For any who may be interested, one year I flew my (very) old Ephesian and had my verry own row there!  Yup, it was about 4 feet behind EVERYONE else.  I think I got 8 points! HB~> LL~

There's 11 in A, 16 in B, 17 each in C and D.  With 61 entrants, why aren't there three groups with 15 and one with 16?

I'm not going to get into the whole "this is tilted toward <insert image of your paranoia here>" -- because it's obviously tilted toward people who actually showed up as opposed to, say, me.  But I am curious why the quantities are not more evenly spread between groups.

Steve is sure right.  The best practice flight weather today was David Fitzgerald doing the training flight for the judges at 7:00 am.  Went down hill from there.  To help with the circle grouping questions one should know these are the advanced and open flyers mixed.  There are exactly 11 open class flyers on each circle- balanced unlike a time or two in the past.

To my amazement nobody has mentioned that old time and classic were flown today.  I was busy (judging) so didn't get pics.  The second round was especially brutal in the wind with most passing.  Dan Banjock earned his salary this week with a heroic flight in a hurricane with his Galloping Comedian to finish the flying today.
Bill Werwage won Classic
Mike McHenry won Old Time
Perhaps others can fill in more details.

I made a remark to Brett that never could I have imagined I would be judging a flight on the LPad of Bill Werwage flying an Ares-  he told me not to let it go to my head.... Don't think I did..  Was spectacular tho.

In other news, as has been posted already, it was incredibly windy today! A few people were out practicing. The most impressive flight I saw was Dave Fitzgerald's last practice flight in the wind. He flew like the wind wasn't even there. Very impressive to watch! Hopefully the wind will die down this evening for some last practice flights before officials tomorrow morning.

I have seen a lot of good flights in practice over the past few days. I think it is too early to say anyone was clearly above the rest. I am pulling for the guy with the green and blue plane...

The plane that wins
Will be green and blue,
But orange and yellow,
And mostly white, too.

I've already been given the 411 on that issue. Info travels fast.

I took a look at the other five pages of the Thread. Lots of unrelated Posts.

I just believe a Warbird looks out of place all shined up and polished.

If there's an issue with topic, we do have Moderators.

When was the last time you were at an air show.  Those war birds had better or just as good a finish as our control line planes.

Jose sorry you couldn't come this year.  As Brett said 'sporty' might be generous at times.  Tough at others.  Using your engine this week as this airplane's regular engine is getting a shake of holy water from Dub Jett.  Hope you make it next year.

A comment about doing much with the scores above:  these are from four different circles/ sets of judges.  Some circles drift higher or lower than others so to pluck and rank a score from different circles at this point doesn't mean too much.  The goal at this stage is to end up tomorrow afternoon with the top 5 off each individual circle.  Those 'top 20' then fly on Friday to whittle it down to 5 who will have a gunfight on Saturday.  Also results from today might look a lot different after round 4!!!  Just got an alert to show up at the Pampa meeting in a bit so better shake a leg.

Yesterday I left the field before many of the second round scores were up so this morning l will post the board from the second round then.  Today the weather gods are smiling on us with the best weather of the week so far- light breezes and topping out around 80 degrees.  As I write early practice is going on and Brett Buck is starting his ship for the judges warm up flight.  I won't show the scoreboard again until we are finished today to take no chance of a judge who might tune in at some point front seeing the scores.  This is sort of a policy we adhered to when we began these webcasts and it eliminates any question that might come up in this regard.

Hi Bill!  You are all very kind- thank you.  Got back out to the field to check out a new plug and new jug of fuel but there weren't too many out.  Some flew early,  some went to celebrate,  some just went to rest.... This gets grueling a bit.  Everyone prepares in their own way.  The weather looks pretty windy tomorrow so those who were out tonight were looking to trim for it- and it is already blowing more than it did all day.  In fact on my last flight the air was so dead the judges asked me where I wanted them to be- I told them I didn't know,  wherever they felt something on the back of the neck.  There have been a couple times like that when the airplane sort of dies for lack of air to fly in.  Doubt that will happen tomorrow.  I'll try to post the flight order in the morning before we start.

Dave congrats on top 20. With all that you have done, for us stay home guys, chronicling the action and you were able to make top 20. Way to go. Hope you can continue with the play by play.
Steve Fitton way to go returning to top 20. Second round scores were real good. Go get them tomorrow.
Steve the new plane must be a killer.
Matt so close.
Jose Modesto

Steve's new airplane is flying great! It will be scary to see what he'll be able to do with that airplane once he gets it fully trimmed and more comfortable with it.

Missing the cut by three points is incredibly disappointing. Just have to fly better and have a better looking plane next year....

Congratulations to all the qualifiers and especially to my West Coast buddies.  Sorry to see Chris Cox edged out.  He was looking real good the last time I saw him in Oregon.  Ditto for Matt Colan who has been working hard to make the breakthrough.  What a difference a few points make.  Joe Gilbert...make 'em work their butts off!

Good luck to all tomorrow on Top 20 day...the fastest, most demanding few hours in Stunt to see who gets to do it all over again on Saturday.

Spectating from the den is a lot easier on the Tums bills but not near as much "fun."

Doug is down and Todd Lee follows on.  Todd had done splendidly with the smallish Spitfire-looking ship (front row in appearance) and even with the LA .46 he's chugged on through this wind. He fires and is away with pop Jim launching.

Just guessing but from the scores it appears the winds at the start of the first round were about the toughest.  Noted that Derek's wing folded (sorry, my man...been there, done that...which won't make you feel any better)  flying 7th so I started looking at scores around that time frame for both circles.  Pretty plainly tough air comparing those scores to the same guys in the second round.  Orestes being the standout exception as he managed to fly identically whenever they put him up.  Pretty impressive comparison!

It's going to be a shoot out tomorrow.  Best of luck to all of a pretty damn good group of champions.  Watch out for Kaz,  he's the only one with his name not yet on the Walker Trohpy but he's also long past sneaking into contention!

Bravo to my buddy, Brett.  Careful.  When you're on top they're all shooting for you.  If you fly better, however, they can never get on your tail for a clean shot.

Ted

The weather report shows PERFECT stunt weather in the morning.  It WILL be a flying contest.  The ping pong ball draw was done at the pavilion and most scattered.  I'll wander back out this evening to see what's shakin'.  With the weather it was sad Derek lost his ship- but amazing it was the only one lost.  He now has an excuse to build a new one.
Title: Re: 2015 NATS Coverage
Post by: Matt Colan on July 17, 2015, 12:19:15 PM
Derek was really smoking in an excellent flight when that happened. Kaz flew almost like there was no wind at times, his plane never wound up that much.  Joe Gilbert, from what I have heard left out a maneuver or two on accident.  Gene Martine was putting in a good wind flight until the square 8 when it started blowing somewhere around the 20mph mark.  About 90% of his overheads were free flight.  Grandpa lost his airplane in the vertical 8 and he smacked the L-Pad straight in on circle 2.

I warmed up the judges this morning with Eric Viglione and we probably had the best air of the day, and the wind was already blowing around 10-12mph at 7:30am.

The conditions were definitely challenging, and a lot of people were doing the wind dance to keep their planes on the end of the lines.  I have a bunch of video I'm looking at now and will soon be posting them onto Youtube.

We got some maneuvers in the wrong order. I think he skipped from the outside rounds to the triangles, or something like that. Unfortunately, a pretty classic type of mistake that everyone has made in the Top 20 at one time or another, myself included.

Congratulations to the top 5 I'm sure they all fought hard for their place.  Some may have made it look easy. ....I'm sure it wasn't.

A special congratulations to Kaz Minato who told me in an e-mail several days ago that he wasn't a good enough flier to win.  I told him he was, especially after seeing him fly at VSC this year.  He's proving me right!   He's obviously been working very hard.

Go Kaz!  Not only a great Gentleman...but a terriffic modeler and flier!

A special "Ouch" to Derek...what's to say..., you had a great flight going and likely would have been one of the 5 had not fate stepped in.  Some things are simply beyond our control.  Get them next year!

We'll see, I suppose. I'll give it the old college try!

A lot of the scoring variations depended on which circle you flew on. Circle 4 was easier to fly on with cleaner wind, even at 18 mph (measured 18, not eyeballed 18 (AKA 8 mph)). Circle 3 was pretty bumpy and even Paul referred to it as "survival" conditions. There were good and bad moments where the air abated a bit, but mostly it was the same throughout, at least until the break.

There was a 45-minute or so suspension due to lightning. The first thunder was heard during the vertical 8 on my second flight, and I think we got one more flight in before it was suspended. Then it rained hard and had some more lightning, then got clear before the next storm came in. I don't think the air got any better after the storm, but it did shift directions slightly. It's still ugly-looking but no rain for a while.

I also want to thank everyone for their condolences after my wing failed. This is the best event in the world and its the people in it that make it that way. A special thanks to John Hill, after the crash he asked me about the prop I lost and 5 minutes later he came back with 4 and would not let me pay him for them. Thank you John!!!

Losing the best plane I have ever had during a flight that would have put me on the right track to compete tomorrow was tough, but being around all these incredible people makes it all worth it!!!

No problem Paul, I would have stayed at the field but shortly after the crash Melissa came up to me and informed me that one of her diamond earrings (anniversary present) was missing out of her ear. We rushed back to the hotel to beat the cleaning crew in hopes of finding it. Fortunately we did beat them and it was in the sheets of our bed. All is well and I will see you tomorrow.

I will be here next year, with a new plane!

Good luck tomorrow!

While they are ok break I would like to thank everyone who worked tirelessly to make it all happen. Each and every year you guys make this a great trip.

Derek's crash was very unfortunate. He was on his way to another top5 from what I saw.

Steve Moon had a best finish at 12. He made the Russian motor work well all week even in the winds.

Steve Fitton improved every flight this week with a brand new plane. Way to go Steve!

Eric Viglione has the PA 75 run I WANT!!!

Congrats to Chris Rud on well fought out 7th place. He had a very long week with motors and props but kept forging ahead and it paid off.

Condolences to John Hill and the Texan a low pull out damaged the plane and it was no longer flyable.

Frank Williams is the MAN! His sidewinder was a beast and cut though the winds like it wasn't even there.

Frank McMillan fought hard with Caudron 9 and flew well as usual.

Dang it Joe Gilbert! It's rounds then squares then triangles. He flew good all week. His design is a really good flying model.

Rich Oliver had one of the coolest looking planes there. His paint schemes are always spot on!!  Sencond row for him, Boom!! He was fighting hard in the top 20 and the rains came and sticky lines got him.  His plane lives to fight another day.

Dale Gleason got his tendon rebuilt on one of his fingers on his right hand. I think he might have some PA parts in there but I am not sure. Linda worked circle 1 and 2 like the pro she is and gave us the best brownies in all of Inidiana! Thank you!!

Max Moon made a nice FP 25 sized hole in the practice circles and is seriously hooked now and wants to learn how to pull out of the wing over now that he has figured out how to enter into it. Doug Patterson gave him enough stuff to keep him going for sometime. Thank you Doug! Max asked to build on the new stuff every day back at the hotel. :)

Bob Howard and Gary McClellan judged and did a very good job. Thank you. Bob, you up for running th nats?? :)

Mike Scott and grandson Jefferey Scott made the trip. Jeffery was 1 point away from the win in beginner and brought home a serious amount of loot. Mike worked hard all week and even more so in the few weeks prior to get his electric Genesis working. He was flying for a birth in the top 20 and the motor shutdown in the overheads and plane couldn't be saved. Mike took like the true nats champ he is a just moved on.

As for me I was pretty darn frustrated/mad for sure yesterday afternoon when the scores were posted. I just made too many mistakes in the heavy winds in the early round and gave away points on stupid stuff on the second round. In this game you have to fly good enough so you can't be denied. This year I didn't quite get it done. The warm up flight was hard this morning knowing I could have been waiting to fly for the championship again. But that's the way it goes.

Mother Nature is a tough tax-master, for sure and those that survived to fly on Saturday...even to warm up the judges...had to have fought the good fight.  a very "eventful" event; one that will be remembered for a while.

Congratulations to all who survived and best rebound thoughts to some...Derek and Captain Dale, for instance...who were wounded in action but survived to compete again.

Congrats to Paul Walker for winning his 12th Walker Cup! It was definitely a hard fought contest, and I thought anybody had a shot to win it.  After the flyoff between the junior, senior and open winner, Dave Fitzgerald let me fly his Thundergazer.  It flew just like mine did, except it didn't pull like a freight train like mine does.  No excuses for me now!  ;D  Thanks again Dave for letting me fly it!

As usual the trip back is a time to reflect on my own performance and where I need new focus to improve.  Sometimes we defeat ourselves in some ways but we also can see where we have moved forward in positive ways.  We can see what works, what doesn't and where we might be wasting our efforts.  The 2016 Nats?  Starts in the morning.

Congrats to all of the top 5 pilots and big condolences to Derek for the wing that broke off like that. Especially when that engine sounded so damn good!

I would like to congratulate PW on his 12th win.  Certainly a number of wins that will be hard to beat let alone match.  12 wins is an INSANE amount of domination. To do such a thing in any event takes an incredible amount of work and dedication and CLPA is no different and might even be harder as you have to BUILD YOUR OWN MODEL!!!!  BOOM!!!  A detailed conversation with Paul this week revealed he really does work his ass of at this stuff and wins because of it.  Congratulations again!!  Your work and attention to detail has once again prevailed.

Congrats to David for a hard fought finals.  He had to fly an incredible flight in the second round on Top 20 day to make the finals and he took advantage of it and pressed Paul as best he could in the finals.  Second place is hard to swallow but from my position 6th is way worse!  ;D  The Thundergazer has and is serving you well.

Orestes Hernandez is a workaholic on the field.  This guy gets out a flys and trims on his Shark all the time.  He and his trusty flying partner Josias are always there putting in flight after flight. They found the racing circles and took advantage in the mornings and got in some serious work and it paid off. My son thought his spinner was really cool with all the extra cooling holes in it.   :D :D

All week long Derek and I thought Brett Buck was the class of the field.  He and his plane are like one well oiled machine.  His plane just flips through the corners with ease.  It looked the same when the winds were blowing or not.  It was always the same.  Anyone who has ever seen BB fly knows he just stands there like he is waiting for money from the atm to pop out.  His body language is very quiet. Friday morning in the winds we saw him whip his plane into the overhead eight entrance.  We knew it was howling when we saw that happen.  4th place in this crowd is a very respectable finish and he should be proud.

Kaz Minato continues to dominate the US scene year after year.  I commented to my brother "If he would save some traveling money sometimes I might have a better chance!"  HAHAHA!!  Seriously though this guy is top notch in every aspect, building, finishing, flying, and most importantly as a gentleman.  Every year he brings a model that has been flown hard and traveled all over the world and it ends up on the front row every time. It's amazing and it's no fluke or luck of the draw or a chance happening.  He works hard at this game and it pays off year after year.  Way to go Kaz! Please keep coming back. The US scene is always better when you are here.

This was a great a nats.  If you have not been please come and see these things first hand for yourself.  In the end it's numbers on a board and a name on the Walker Trophy but the memories that were created along the way will be cherished forever.  Come to Muncie and create your Nats modeling memories....

Thanks for reading, that is all for now.

 :) :) :)

I'm going to call him when he gets home to order some "stuff" anyway!  Curious minds want to know!

My grandfather and I just got home after a long 16 hour drive from Muncie. I had an absolute blast all week seeing and making new friends. The NATS is almost as much a social gathering as it is a competition. I was, and still am disappointed that I missed the top 20 by less than three points, but it was definitely a learning experience. You just can't give away points anywhere, including in appearance. They matter just as much as flight points. With that in mind, I will definitely be have an airplane that looks better, and one that is rubbed out to gain every point possible. Also, I have to have a better looking plane so Randy Smith can stop calling me "Dozen."  LL~

There were so many great experiences over the past week, I can't put them all down on one post. Anybody who hasn't been to the NATS and is considering going, you just have to go. The videos, posts, and pictures is only a very small aspect of what goes on here.

My favorite picture of this Nats.  Dawn on day 2 of qualifying; everyone is still in the game, the possibilities are endless.....!

Awesome picture, Steve.  Made it my first desktop pic other than one of my daughter's pastel landscapes in many a moon.  Your comment was spot on as well.  Thanks for sharing.

Shug,

That low blue tent used to be a tall blue tent until the wind blew at which time the inhabitants wisely lowered its angle of attack.  Standard practice when the wind gets above Vr (rotation speed) for the tent's gross weight.

Thankee. Thought maybe it was covering a hole. Maybe some sort of visual aid. Possible judge nap spot.

I have to agree with other comments so far Steve, this is a great pick, especially including all the manly one handed engine burping going on at the crack of dawn.

Congrats on a great Nat's recovery with the last minute build/finish of the new Rapier too! Well done!

I may cut my face off. But, then again, my face is not really worth saving.

I only do it myself in reasonable air, with me aimed the right way WRT the wind, and with my elbow braced on my knee. If not all of those, I get assistance.

Thanks Eric for all the help and patience you showed while I at times chased my tail with the new plane.  It was the end of what had been a very long month.  At home it feels a bit strange to not have to rush down to either the shop or flying field every morning!

I was pumped to qualify again after missing last year, but hated to see it come at the expense of Eric Taylor and Matt Colan, both of whom flew extremely well all week long.  I think the total spread between 5th, 6th, and 7th on our circle was three points(!)  Eric was battling a bug of some sort and really had to gut out the contest; I can't imagine flying a Nats while being sick.

Matt got to have Brett and Dave look over his Thundergazer and I know the model will be flying better than ever thanks to their input.   The session provided some comic relief as well: "Hey! who put this trim tab on....!"

I had to leave early Saturday because it transpired that Friday night a drunk driver got bored and decided to drive his F-150 THROUGH the side of my wife's office.  Fortunately the drunken idiot was not injured and the truck hit part of her building that was not being used, so she can still run her practice while repairs are being made.  Nonetheless, she was pretty agitated and was glad I got home when I did.

when we went to dinner after the pilots meeting and circle assignments, Steve and I joked about one of us beating the sh*t out of the other if one of us knocked the other out of the top 20. When I went to congratulate Steve on making the cut, first thing I said to him was, "do I get to beat the sh*t out of you now or later." All in good fun of course! ;D congrats on making the cut, you put in a couple good wind flights that day!

I'll get that trim tab fixed hopefully this week...assuming grandpa hasn't packed away everything I need for it yet.

I think I may have one input that might help someone (me) avoid having a less than stellar contest experience due to a prop-induced injury. I really cannot fathom how I managed to brush the back of the prop while removing the glow-driver, but, the reason I can't fathom how I did it is because I didn't SEE it happen. Therefore, I wasn't watching what I was doing, was I?

Just getting cranked up for it, actually. I drove (starting at 3:45 in the morning on Sunday) to Hot Springs, Arkansas, to visit my elderly parents. I just said goodbye, and will be leaving Hot Springs around 4:00 AM to start back. First night, Gallup, NM, then home on Thursday late. Assuming that the I-10 bridge failure doesn't create a massive traffic jam on i-40.

Dale,

I think that we should all paint the prop tips white or yellow like full size aircraft. We are all  lazy in that category, including me.

Painting the prop tips won't help if your fingers get against the back of the prop blade.   I have a pic some where of mine.  It was the old IQ finger on me.   I'm just glad it wasn't the front of the prop.   Of course I've lost count how many times the prop has gotten me during a race or when I do something stupid.

I am halfway through - 16+ hours today (big crash in Albuquerque during rush hour, right near pre-existing road construction). Not terribly tired but another 15-ish tomorrow.

It was indeed another 15 hours - would have been more like 12.5 if it weren't for bad drivers, all of which were in California. Bad trying to get through Bakersfield over to I-5, and the usual "quality driving" on I-5, with idiots running side-by-side for mile after mile 5 mph below the speed limit and other idiots passing on the right trying to get ahead.

Being that this is in California Brett, could it be due to "global warming?"  ;)  (Sometimes I just can't resist the urge.)

People driving northbound on I-5 are mostly from LA. That's probably a sufficient explanation.

My impressions from the Nat's:
Great contest managment. I hardly noticed them, and that is why it was so great. That's a good thing! Bob and Curt did well to take care of things and not have any "emergencies". Thanks guys.

Muncie weather was her usual. A mixed bag. When I arrived it was in the 70's, with thick dense air. Next to no wind that day. Did I mention that the humidity was relatively low? The next day it was very nice conditions, and light wind. Monday had the storm pass through, and that cleared the field early, but we had to go polish our planes anyway for the appearance judging and pilots meeting. Tuesday had "some" wind, but not enough to stop flying. Wednesday and Thursday were very nice days, all but a little cooler than normal. Friday had some wind. It wasn't real strong though. On circle 4 it was quite flyable, and you could put up a score on it. Circle 3 received the "benefit" of the wind blowing through the pavilion, and making it rough. The  weather on Saturday was near perfect, and warmed up to the 90's.....Which my plane REALLY liked.

The quality of planes is really amazing. I can remember when I started flying at the Nat's (77) that there were a "few" planes that stood out, and many that were "good". Now, there are many that stand out for their quality. Very nice to see!

The flying was great! I was really impressed by Chris Rudd. Wow, can he fly! Watch out you old timer top 5 guys!  It used to be that I was the youngest pilot in the top 5, now I am the oldest.  How time flies. This year, you had to have an AARP card to be in the top 5.....Right Brett? I was also impressed by Matt Colan and his desire and drive to do well. Keep practicing and you will be near the top soon. Another I enjoyed watching was Eric Taylor. He just missed making the top 20, and you could see the fire in his eyes. Howard Rush is trying hard, and has shown he can make the top 5.  You just need another plane or two to support mishaps that can happen....Right? I also enjoy watching Doug Moon fly. He too has a fire in his eye, and JUST missed the finals this year.

It appears there are quality pilots waiting to take over for the old floks who will not be competitive soon. That's great to see.

Myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this Nat's. I had a plan, stuck to it, and it panned out. I live and fly at 2000' altitude, and when it gets 90 degrees and above, the density ratio can get to 0.85 and the density altitude can approach 5000'. Thus when I got there and it was 0.95 DR and a DA of 1600', I had some adjusting to do. In looking at the weather forecast, it was to be hotter and more humid by the end of the week, so I opted to not change too much and "live with" the trim being a bit off in the early days, as I knew it was going to "come to me" by the end of the week. That plan worked out perfectly, and as the temperatures went up on Saturday, so did my scores.  It was once again, a lot of work to get to this point. I have said repeatedly, this is the last year I will put in so much practice prior to another Nat's. I will still attend in the future, but I will be depending more on my skill and cunning than ever before. However, I have 3 pretty good flying Predators at the moment, which should need minimal work, other than just getting the cob webs out.

It was great seeing everyone once again, and I trust the next time I am there, it will be more fun for me. Well, I probably won't have Dan Banjok levels of fun, but I'll try!

The only answer to Muncie weather conditions would be to move the Nats to CA.  San Diego would be nice, and weather would cease to be an issue.
