Aero Gloss Thunderbird ( Mk I ? )
« on: May 25, 2009, 12:43:59 AM »
In the Aerogloss dope advert , theres a picture of Bob Palmer
Holding an upright engined T-Bird. Does anyone have other
 pictures of this Aeroplane .

Scaleing up the paint schematics of the Mk I T-Bird plan , I
Got the Fuse layout , And built it . And made a canopy mould.

However I picked up a 5 in. Sig canopy , that cutting  the
rear of got a perfect mach , Including the slopeing sills ,
that I hadnt built in from the rear head fairing .

Basically its a T-Bird Mk I with  a Narrower Canopy and
seperate rear head ( canopy ) fairing   ????????????????

Id be glad of any info on the Aerogloss Adv. Aircraft , Thanks .

Matthew.  Here is a pretty accurate copy of Bob Palmer's T'bird with upright engine.  Power is an OS 35-S.  It started as an RSM kit, and bashed from photos of Palmer's plane.

p.s.  I should add that the "canopy" is actually flat sheet of plastic.  Not part of a "bubble".

That's pretty close Floyd,

I think Bob's canopy was a little longer than yours and the stripe back from the window was different.  Other than that about identical,

Oh, I do have the full color advertisement for Aero Gloss on the inside cover of a magazine, I just can't put my hands on it right now......ugh, master of the disappearing world!

Thanks.Presumably its the same one . Have to unpack the gear to find mine.

You can see the canopy isnt the full fuselage width . The sig five in. canopy

exactly matches the one on the colour layout drawings on the  org. kit plan .

I should go and dig out the Veco plans of the Thunderbird.  But, I beleive the plans showed the option of upright or inverted.  They also showed a cowl over the upright engine version.  The inverted showed blocks for the top and a different cowl for the bottom.   DOC Holliday

HI Doc,

I can't say about the Original Veco T-Bird, I never had that kit.  But, the Veco Smoothie kits from the EARLY '60s had the option for an upright or inverted engine.  You just flipped the firewalls over.

I have the second version Chief instructions/isometrics but I cannot remember if it had the option or not.

The *Aerogloss Ad* T-Bird definitely has a half bubble canopy, not the "flat/curved"windscreen with the cockpit top like the Smoothie, that's for sure from Ty's posting.  That one definitely looks very similar to the Veco Original T-Bird kit pictures I have seen, and somewhat similar to the Brodak kit.

That thinner in width canopy escaped my attention.  Well, I guess my T'Bird is no longer legal-CLASSIC, but instead will have to fly it in modern PAMPA, unless I want to rebuild the canopy.

Floyd,

I've looked at that picture a lot and can't see that is narrower than the fuselage.  So I guess your version is still classic legal.

The one in the phot's the ONLY one ive seen with the narrow canopy.

ALL the kits have the 'kit' fuselage . So ARE Classic Legal .

Must have been some dreaded plot, to get the scemetaic
correct for the Aerogloss device ?

Looking at the B/W picture of Bob's airplane, what engine is that in the nose.  It appears to be a 4 head bolt Veco .35.  I didn't know there was such an a Veco engine.......Duh, also the fuel delivers is switched to the inboard side of the fuselage.  Strange going's on.

The turtle deck aft of the canopy is definitely NOT narrower. It is an illusion created by the paint colors. Look closer in the dark area of the cockpit. Yes, the canopy was similar to the front of a Sig bubble and the Red Skin.

The engine in the picture is the early Veco engine. The very small exhaust port was on the opposite side than the later Veco engines. The early engine was made as .29. .31 and .35 in the same case. I have a .35 and a never run .31. I am currently building an OTS airplane in honor of John Miske that is set up for those engines.

I have a copy of an old Veco ad for those engines, but I don't have it with me at this computer.

HI Jim,

I have an excelllent running Veco 4 bolt 35, it is visually identical to the Veco .31.  It was made by Allyn and looks very similar to same vintage K&Bs.

I picked it up at an R/C swap meet for $5, and with a couple gaskets, it runs like new.
