CARRIER CONTEST REPORT APRIL 28, 2013  DALLAS TX

We had great weather, some new airplanes, and some new technology at this contest. Dave Ek flew
his new F9F Panther in Sportsman profile, Mike Greb's MO-1 was sporting a radio operated throttle,
and I had a new purpose-built Zero with a radio and also an older Zero converted to radio throttle.
For those who are unfamiliar, starting this year carrier planes are allowed to use 2.4 ghz radio control
for non-elevator functions. Let me tell you, it is simpler, more reliable, more positive in the wind, and not
any more expensive than a three-line setup.

Everyone pitched in to help float the boat, and we were ready to set sail around 10:00 AM. Mike Greb was first up, and as far as I know, he became the first person in the country to make a complete official flight with a radio equipped carrier airplane.  I was Buzz Aldrin to his Neil Armstrong by being the second person to make a complete official flight with a radio equipped carrier airplane. The deck was in use almost continuously for several hours, then the pace slowed as the contestants and their attempts both got used up.

Bill Lee and Terry Kirby timed most, if not all, of the flights, along with various contestants and helpers who pitched in as time permitted. Once again, tireless Phil Dunlap manned the triangle for the entire day. Thanks to all of them, and CD Patrick Hempel. Hopefully David Russum will have some pictures soon.

Thanks for the report.   I was busy still cutting up a tree after Church.   Also second race for local stock racing in which it was not freezing.  Texas boy cleaned house in A modified class.

OK, here are the pics.  First up is Mike Greb's MO-1, retrofitted with 2.4 GHz controls (note the handle).  His first flight was an attempt, but the second was good, so as Bill said he has the first full competition flight under the new 2.4 GHz rules.  Dave Ek has his A-7 repaired and he put in a good flight, although the launch was a bit low.  Bill Bischoff had his new Zero flying well.  This plane was built from the start with the 2.4 GHz throttle system in mind.  He also has a second servo for the line slider release - very slick, definitely worth considering if you are building a new plane.  The pictures are from Bill's second flight, the cloud cover was clearing by this time, so the pictures came out better.

Walker Trophy champ Doug Moon put in 2 flights on Bill Bischoff's Hellcat.  His Brother Steve Moon competed in the October 2012 contest, but was out of town this weekend.  Dave Ek had his new F9F Panther.  It flew well, looked even better, but unfortunately suffered a ramp strike on landing damaging the landing gear.  Eerily similar to this video:

Fortunately it stayed in one piece (not to mention no fire).  Melvyn Schuette catches the wire with his MO-1,  Bill Bischoff flew his older Zero, retrofitted with 2.4 GHz controls.  Bill also flew JP Hanway's beautiful Sterling Guardian in Class II and Nostalgia, and Dale Gleason flew his big OS .65 powered MO-1.

It was great!!  I had a blast flying carrier. I only wish I could have stayed longer.

Thanks Bill for letting me try it on your plane the "Mule."

Thanks for the coverage Bill, you got all of the information down and some good photos to boot. Did you let several different fliers fly your mule in sportsman? If you did what a nice thing to do. I'm planning on going to the NWR and it would be fun to let different people fly my NW sport 40 plane in competion, we will see. Also hope to take some pictures to post.  Eric

Eric, many club members have flown the mule, and several have flown it in contests. This time Doug Moon and David Russum both flew it in Sportsman. David also flew the slider-equipped mule II in Class I to get some hanging practice, but ended up touching grass on all of his attempts with it. The whole reason I built these two Hellcats was for other people to be able to fly them. They are generating some interest, and David should have his own plane done by our fall contest. The hardest part seems to be overcoming peoples' reluctance to fly someone else's plane. Once they try it, I have yet to have anyone say they didn't like it.

Duke, I'm going to use a carrier training plane I built a while back. Took out the TT36 and installed a OS FP 40, removed the slider trip release, and lengthened the landing gear legs so it would struggle off the deck. Notice the flat bottom air foil in the second picture, has 360 sq.inch wing area.  Eric
