New plane started
« on: July 10, 2009, 10:37:19 AM »
Well, after a lot of debate, I'm finally starting a new plane. Funny, I doodled around quite a bit and came up with at least 3 new designs, but wasn't committed to any of them. I liked them all, but it wasn't what I was looking for at the moment (all may show up at some point. They are all pretty cool, especially the elliptical job). Thought about some more, then, weirdly, sat down and came up with the final in a single sitting. I'm still a pencil and paper guy so I need to have a clear idea of what I want, both aerodynamically and aesthetically, and have the picture in my head before I start. I tend towards flurries of activity when I'm feeling it and droughts when I'm not.

So, next few days will be dinking around with some preliminaries like machining engine mounts and a different idea I have about a leadout slider that should work well. Once some of the machine work is done and I have a bellcrank laid up (and a few other odds and ends), I'll start cutting wood. I tend to do all the parts set up ahead of time so there's not break in construction once I get going. OH, I need to pick up some CA, too. Put that on my list. Should go together pretty quickly and I already have a paint scheme figured out. I love it when that happens.

John,

Uh, yellow? Uh, well, no, actually. More white, silver and some other colors. Yellow might find it's way into the trim, though.

What does it look like?  ???  Jet styled, classic lines, modern looks, what?  What about aerodynamics?  You got me wondering

Matt,

It falls into my new philosophy. Kinda of a small, light plane with a BHE (big honking engine). The aesthetics fall under the old philosophy: make it bitchin".

Hey, I heard a line from some East Coast Sports Network yak, yak the other day. He, surprisingly, had a great comment: If you can't be great, be interesting.   ;D

Checkerboard? Checkerboard is great on a plane with a good solid belcrank! HB~>

Seriously, when are you going to do another Deluxe??  #^

Well, a new Deluxe is sort of getting built. The new plane, uh, borrows some features. I'll build another RM at some point, I imagine.

Denny,

Nope, no high AR with this one. But I have something on the board that I think you would approve of.

Here's a hint... sort of.

Buy the way, the pictures above are before I cut a single piece of wood (well, the top one). The bottom is the beginnings of my trick hatch cover. I'm now started cutting ribs and some other odds and ends. I'm machining a plug for a mold to make a new slider idea I had. It involved a clamping mechanism that will unbolt entirely from the wing so I can finish it without goofing up the slot the lines go through. A sidelight to the actual function, but kinda cool.

Matt,

The aesthetics are sort of based on my Slider design. Sort of a slimmed down and racicalized Slider.

Case anybody doesn't know what the Slider looks like, here it is.  Now picture it slimmed down and racialized ;D  I probably read this already, what do you plan on powering it with?

Matt,

I already said: a BHE.   ;D

616 square inches. Projected to be about 46-48oz (if I can keep my finger off the paint gun trigger this time) and powered with a RO-Jett 65.

I like that weight and a big engine, sounds already like it would fly good H^^

Steve,

Yea, Mariano Rivera must be the only pitcher in the history of baseball that manage to throw only one pitch his entire career. But nobody could hit it.  :)

Hey, the other design I'm probably going to build after this one has the cool name: Synaptic.

"racicalized"?   Dictionary.com has never heard that one.

I know a "slider" is a set of miniature hamburgers...Crist Rigotti's ears are perking right up!  LL~ Steve

Steve,

Cultural term from surfer community (one I belonged to for many years). Hard to describe directly as it entails certain consistent elements but applied in a variety of ways. It's usually by assent. Pic below is an example. Sort of a "you know it when you see it" thing. Also sometimes appears in bike builders communities.

And Steve, that ain't what Slider means. Perhaps I spend too much time reading military sci-fi. Love that John Ringo. A slider is a smaller version of a tenar: a battle rig used by the Posleen 'oolts during the invasion of Earth. Uses an EM crystal matrix to contain a fusion type reaction for power and a 3mm HVM launcher that would penetrate Fort Knox. Very cool little unit.

Jim,

It's an adjustable version of a Tom Morris style jig. I've been using it for a very long time.

As an old biker tramp semi-rehabilitated by my good wife, and having grown up in the surfer era (not being one myself) the picture of the chopper w/board is a visual oximoron. Surfers road Hondas and met the niceset people, Chopper riders of the day wouldn't have been seen anywhere near a surf board unless a little surfer cutie was carrying it, and even then, it certainly wouldn't have been the board he was interested in!

There was a guy that I surfed with quite a lot when I was a kid. Had an old knucklehead with a trailing for his surfboard. I always thought it was kinda cool.

Can you imagine riding the rig above on the freeway. Man what a rudder. Be interesting with any crosswind.   ;D

James,

Man, at the time, everywhere (mostly 70s). From Trestles in the south to Leo Carillo in the north and most places in between. My favorites were Encinitas and Leucadia, though I liked San Onofre pretty well. Used to love to pi$$ off the secret services guys. Man, that was a long time ago.

Oh, back on topic. I did get the motor mounts and engine crutch finished today. Wasn't thinking a had put the engine in for a batch (crockpot and coolant), so I could drill for the engine yet. Do that tomorrow when it's done. I'm still machining the plug for the mold for the trick leadout slider. I'll shoot a picture of that when it's done. Should be interesting. Hopefully, I can get the fuse box built tomorrow and get onto the wing. I've got the jig all setup up for that. It's going relatively quickly.
