Magician 15 wood selection
« on: July 29, 2010, 06:24:51 PM »
I have built 1/2 A's from scratch but never anything larger. What sections of the plane whould it be acceptable to use Hobby Lobby wood and what sections should I spring for quality wood. What distributor should I go through to get competition wood? Finally what shipping company will stand the best chance of getting the wood to my door in one piece. The only place I know to get hardwoods from is Brodak's. I can't wait to get my plan and start the build. My father is almost doen with a full size Magician and I'm seriously jealous of it. LOL I'm considering going with silk span dope and rustoleum for my finish.

I use Lonestar balsa www.lonestar-balsa.com Lonestar uses UPS or FedEX but they pack it real good. If you have a problem call and they'll fix it. I believe you have to have a minimum 25.00 order not including shipping, but wood never seems to go to waste.

Lonestar seems to have some really good bundle deals. I hope my plan has the wiblets that yours has. With those budles I won't have to rely on the hobby lobby or Michaels to get decent wood. I really can't wait for this plan. I hope it's not one of those deals were it takes a month to get. What colors did you use on your magician lee?

So far mine is just white with a black canopy, if the humidity would ever go down I'll add some trim. If your plans aren't satisfactory let me know.

Nathan, I think Walter sold the kitting rights to Brodak, you'll probobly be better off scratch building. I sent you a PM.

Brodak should have the plans. If you can't get a set send me a private message. I'll copy a set I have and send it on.

I haven't seen the plans anywhere on brodaks site. I know I could just get a full Magician plan and size it down but I'd rather get an actual 15 plan. I think I've got someone else working on it I appreciate your offer though.

Yes, I sold them to Brodak, here is a picture of the plan, might want to call and talk with John personally and ask him to run you off a kit and plans
Thank you and God Bless

I wonder if that magician 15 would fly on a norvel .09.
Looks pretty close to the plans I printed out from a magician driwing I copied online and scaled up.

I'm not sure. I have been told that the kit is a little light for my LA .15 so the norvel might work well.

My Walter Umland kit box says for 09-19 engines but the 15 is recommended. So.... If it's your plane do what you think will work  y1

I have two partially competed Magician 15 kits a friend gave me.  I looked at them and decided they would be over powered with a TD 09.

Wow I guess my LA .15 will be a rocket.

I flew my first Magician 15 with a 1958 Fox Rocket 15. It wasn't a rocket so it was perfect for this model.
It is a nice flying model.

True it was not a rocket in 1978 with a fox 15.
So how does the la 15 compare to the fox ?
Is it like the norvel 049, to the baby bee cox's

Maybe worst lol. It shouldn't be too big of a deal. I can prop the thing to get it were I like it. Hopefully it'll work out. I've checked out the wood and stuff I like this lone star wood so I'll be getting the wood from there. I'm hopeing to silkspan and dope then finish with rustoleum. I am still looking for an inexpensive fuel proof clear coat. Poly gives the model an antique look that I don't want.

I've used Clear Poly on several planes with no antique look to them.

Lee what kind of poly are you using? I was speaking of minwax polyureathane. It seems to yellow pretty quickly. I know I could get automotive poly clear but I have been looking for another option.

I use this, the canopy is still white on the Metaphor II and it's been 3 years.

Cool lee I have been using the brush on type and it has a honey color to it. I will give that a try. Being that I wrecked my bird on saturday I'll be trying it sooner rather han later.
