Help -- Ultracote direction of application
« on: March 02, 2008, 01:04:10 PM »
Arghh   HB~>

I know, it is not OT replicated, BUT -

One roll of Ultracote wont do a Humongous wing if applied/unrolled spanwise.
Has anyone unrolled it and covered each wing TE to LE (two pieces - one top/one bottom)
or as a wrap around TE to LE?
Cant find any info. stating it is "direction critical".
If I can do it this way and do the tips separately I will have enoough on the one roll I have.
Want to do it while watching the race today, if  I can.
Thanks,
Roger v.

As far as I know there is no grain to plastic coating, so the dirrection of application shouldn't matter. I prefer Ultrakote as it shrinks around the wing tips great. Just remember not to use the high heat that you do for monokote. As far as I'm concerned it's your plane use the covering you want, OTS or not. Did my Jamison foam wing with Ultrakote.

Thanks Lee.  H^^
That is also my belief (re grain) but asking a question sometimes gets a surprising answer.
I have used Ultracote (regular and Lite) on a few planes and I also prefer it, especially around wing tips. Humongous wing is also foam, cores from Crist Rigotti - nice work from Crist, highly recommended.
Race starts soon, have to run up to the local "family run" pizzeria to pick up my pizza before
the race starts.

I could be wrong, but I am convinced that Ultra Cote "sinks" more beneath the ribs when applied with the short dimension going span wise.  I have observed this twice, and removed the covering to redo it.

Now, I only cover with the length of the roll (2 meters, I think) going span wise.

As usual, YMMV--just my 2 pesos worth.

Cheers,
Jim

BTW, if you look very closely at the U.C. you may see very light marks (look like very light scratches) in the surface.  These marks have always run the length of the roll; made during the production process??  I put these on the bottom of the surface.

Thanks for the tip Jim. Roger, my wing was cut by Crist also. He does a great job.

Jim,
Info received just in time.
Good observation, especially with a foam wing where minimal sag will contact the foam.
I wont take the chance, will go to local Hobby shop tomorrow for another roll.

Ive used Econocote to cover a foam wing because it sets at a much lower temp.  How did the Ultracote work over the foam?  Ive used Ultracote on a ribbed wing and thought it handled great.  I prefer it to Monocote.

Hi Tom,
Doing it this afternoon.
Second foam wing I have used it on.
Core from Crist Rigotti, highly recommended!
First half, outboard lower wing workied fine. It is a Tom Dixon style construction w/cap strips on the foam so no direct heat on the foam. Tacked @ 220 F, initial shrink @ 300deg F. Will do final shrink when all covered.
Back to work, uhhh, I mean fun - wing covering!!
Roger
ps thanks for the hinge glue reply.   H^^    will use on this plane (Humongous)
