Can anyone tell me who makes fuselage jigs or where I can get them?

Mine came from Byron Barker.  It would survive a small nuclear device.........  It is built so solidly that my Great Great Grandchildren will be able to use it.  go tit several years ago since I figured if I was going to continue to do this hobby for long, I needed something that would assure a perfect fuselage.  Highly recommended.

Byron's business is C.F. Slattery, but I do not have the contact information at hand.

I have not seen Tom Nieburh's jig (Blue Sky Models) but everything he does is top drawer.

Mr. Little,
You are in Aberdeen? I am in Fayetteville(actually in Parkton) but stationed at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville.

HI Marshall,

Yes, Aberdeen.  Just across the reservation.  You in the 82nd or Special Forces?  And I am very familiar with Parkton.

Have you been to Hayes Hobby over in Eutaw Village on Bragg Blvd.?  Alan Hayes is a member on the board, and a C/L flier.  Best Hobby Shop I have ever been to, and been going there since about 1963!

Bill,

It was Allen who got me in this mess in the first place! I have been going there since 1995 when I first got to Bragg. I am extremly lucky to call Allen, Mr. Hayes, and Mrs. Hayes friends. If your time ever permits, I would love to get together and learn something.

By the way, my given name is Marshall, but my friends call me Pat. So please call me Pat.

The fuselage jig from Bluegrass is in itself a work of art.  These are assembled and finished by George Hamby. The small photo at their website hardly does justice to this item that should be in every serious builders inventory.

The name is Bluegrass Unique Model Products, Inc in Dallas.

The fuselage jig that we handle at Blue Sky Models is George Hamby's Bluegrass jig.   We introduced them but now refer people direct to George, mostly for convenience. George's work is Concours for sure.

Marshall,
The fuse jig is a great tool if you have room to set it up and also someplace to store it once done. There is another way that is very accurate and doesn't need the storage space. I first saw this at Windy's shop many years ago (he likely has a video).

Basically, you start with a flat building board with a glass top, this whole thing is set up to be level. Then you take a straight edge and a fine line marker and draw a centerline on the glass in an area that will allow you to work on the fuse but also install the wing and stab and still have room to get around it.

You then cut out all the main formers and very carefully mark the center of the top and bottom of the formers (use a thin line to get accurate alignment). You than can start at one end of the ship and mark the location of the formers on the centerline. Most ships will be built upside down using the straight edge of the fuse top (without the top block) this allows the wing to be install and leveled while still on the board. Next you position the formers and use one drop of CA to secure them to the glass, make sure you use a square to keep them vertical and at 90 deg to the centerline. Once they are in place add the fuse sides. Just keep everything on the board until you get the wing and stab in then carefully cut the CA spot (you could use a drop of CA remover to loosen it) and remove the ship from the board and finish from there.

This works well as long as you have the glass top, the CA is a problem to get off of anything else. Good luck with the build.

Best,      DennisT

Tom Morris has a inexpensive jig, runs about $20.00. Works fine!

I can highly recommend the Blue Sky Models fuselage jig.  It is my most prized building tool.  It's a true work of art that will outlast me.  I even have the attachments to convert the fuselage jig into a wing jig.  It works great!

I've seen other commercial jigs in use by my friends and I much prefer the George Hamby jig to the others. I bought his years ago, but just started using it a year ago. The grid system he has built into the board is really neat to use. The jig is so well made and finished I almost am afraid to use it. I use plenty of wax paper to keep from getting glue and tool scratches on it.
