B-25 & Vagabond
« on: January 18, 2016, 06:44:58 PM »
Now the holidays are over and the wife is back to normal(thanks for your prayers guys), I have gotten some work done on the planes.  The pic of the Vagabond is where I'm at currently and just trial fitted a fuel tank this evening.  The shots of the B-25 trial fitting the flaps and a better shot of what I have just slid together, no glue.   The shots of the wing is today after I cut the slots for the hinges.   Right now there is about 20 degree movement each way on the flaps.   Will pin the hinges once wing is covered and glued in place.   Have a lot of work to do on the engine pods yet.   Ripped up a piece of 3/4 X 1/8 aluminum bar for pads.  more later.

In the Events section it shows March 15-19, 2016.   Glad some one like one of my ideas or way of doing things.   Tom N. and Don H would probably reconsider letting me have plans if they could see the planes in person.   Accidently poked a hole in the wing of the Vagabond..

Had to go to Jo-Anns for some more covering material.  Had enough I covered one side of the B-25 wing.   So I got 10 yards of the Pellon P45 JAS Interfacing.  Had used it on the Vagabond and the draw back to the material is it takes a lot of dope.   So in my brilliance I put a coat of poly-crylic on the bare wood.  After it cured/dried I sanded with 200 grit paper.  It was smother than the dozen coats of dope I used on the Vagabond.   Laid the cloth in place and started brushing poly-crylic on.   On the wing tips I used the sealing iron to get the cloth to stick.   Today after I got home I finished covering the wing.  Will brush on a couple of more coats before sanding.   Yes it is rough to the touch, but not as bad as dope.   By the way the 10 yards was only $5.40 including tax with the wife's 50% discount.   Aint going mention cost difference between the quart can of SIG Butyrate and the Poly-Crylic.

Full size S-1 Ringmasters in back ground.

Well I spent a couple of days ripping a piece if aluminum and cutting to lengths.   Want to be able to swap out engines if the Fox's don't do the trick.  Used 4-40 flat heads 1/2 inch long.  Longer 4-40 will bolt the engines to the pods.   Even with all the advice here on the forum it still is slow for me.   Making a jig for further aluminum pad usage.   Nothing like duplicating things and make them match.

This is the plans build of Don Hutcheson's.   Been a fun and challenging build.  I have the Fox's and the .25's seem to run smoother than the old reliable stunt 35's.   I also have OS LA's and FP's along with the Brodak .25's which seem to be the weaker of the brands.

Well the wing is glued into the B-25 fuselage and am working on the engine pods.   If you read Crist's procedure on his build in the electric section, you will see how I did it.   Also got some more dope and sanding done on the Vagabond.   Spring will be here before I'm ready.

I see what you mean, but I have them edited so they will load.   If you click on the file address below the picture you can then enlarge the view.   The engine pods are on and waiting for flaps to be done and the tail surfaces.   Family keep getting in the way and keeping me out of the shop.

Well the B-25 now has balls.   That is ball links for the controls.  It is also in one piece minus the little detail stuff to go on it.  It is now to the part I detest, finishing.   Any volunteers?  Weight as it sits in the pic according to the scales is just under 40 ounces.   A lot of sanding to go yet.

The last three pics are the push rod hook up.   Bell crank and control horn were done by Dave Trible.

8 x 6s for speed or 9 x 4s to slow it down , 9 x 5 zingers seem good , rich , for akrobatics .

I found filling the intke with the cylinder vertical ( port closed ) , sucking it in , then belting over
4 or 6 times so theyre thoroughly damp , and theyll start straight off , if the batterys good .

6 or 7 turns on the needle . the 7s probly on the 20 % N , 6 for the 10 or 15 / with 27 % oil .
maybe 24 castor , 3 Syn. coolpower .
Found if one muffler fell of the 88 , there was a slight porpoise , if Both feel of , a distinct porpoise .  :o >:D

Got one flight on the Vagabond this evening, then the old Fox decided to quit working.   This is going to be one fun plane and looks great to me in the air.  Of course I may be prejuduced.   Need minor tweek on lead out guide.

Update: got to look at the Vagabond's Fox 35 Stunt.  Some how the spray bar got rotated.   Now that has been taken care of.  Ready for more flights.  Also trashed the snap on spinner after it came off when engine started yesterday. H^^

Since we went from winter to summer over night it seems, have not been in the shop.   But, I have been sanding and filling.   Then sanding and filling again.   Almost ready to put seal coat over the primer.  Amazing how big this B-25 is until you start sanding on it.   Also the block sanding did not work like it should from all the dings I'm having to fill.  It closer than it was though.   I also have all kinds of excuses for not getting it done as well as not flying   HB~>

Those look awesome Doc!!  It's great to see Don's models get built.

I was hoping Don would have done a Beach 18 twin before he put his pen down.  I hear Keith Sandberg did one and I need to link up with him about it.  Have an awesome idea for a finish

Wayne might know where I'm going with that  ;D

Well I hope it posts as it has been awhile since I've added to it.   The Vagabond has been flown and flies great after some engine run issues.  The B-25 is now ready for test flight as soon as I make a set of lines and set the engines.

Was going to fly it when stupidity stepped in.   Sure glad Dave Trible was there as well as the quad copter pilots.  Get to see results of surgery tomorrow.   The engines have been run and are ready. H^^

I wish it was only the finger.  Some how back of hand with gas starting at the knuckles.  Less than 2 inches with 11 stitches.   Don't know what surgeon did other than two cut ligaments.  Will get to see it this afternoon.  Will be using different starting procedure next time.   Not much room between the wing LE and the engines. H^^
