Another carbon vail question
« on: April 28, 2008, 09:53:11 PM »
I posted a question earlier about using butyrate dope for applying carbon vail and am wondering do you have to use dope to apply the carbon?

I pretty much do the same as Ty except I use Brodak Butyrate thinned 60/40 to put it on with. He is right about being careful or it will separate and bunch up. I keep the brush wet and do not go back over it once it's stuck. I do sometimes use a finger to smooth it down or push it into a corner. On compound curves I just cut as needed and overlap.

Something we haven't mentioned lately about CF veil/mat is that even though you buy .2oz from one manufacturer, it may not be the same from another.  The stuff I get from Randy (Aero Products) is very flexible, some other stuff I have bought has sizing like some of the silk on the market.

I do not know how to eliminate the sizing, and it is harder to apply.  It just doesn't lay down as well.

Say Bill ... If you get in a roll of sized CF veil, melt the sizing with a coat of thinner or acetone, then apply dope right over the top of it.  Trying to get the dope to dissolve the sizing forces you to apply several coats all at once, and tears/messes up the fibers of the veil.  Tom H.

Thanks, Brother Tom.  BTW: only 28 more school days and I get to join YOUR *fraternity*!  I DO have several projects for the retirement party which should last two or three years!
