Clowning Around
« on: November 22, 2011, 04:10:31 PM »
Number one of three Baby Clowns is out of paint and into final assembly.  The wing is silkspan with clear butyrate tinted yellow. The fuse and tail plane is in auto base/clear.  Stab and elevator are made from 3/32 balsa to accommodate small DuBro hinges.  Power is an NV Engines Big Mig  049.  I made some decals using Corel Draw software and will post an update when complete.

Joe, is this a kit you built from? I currently own a arf Baby Clown from Brodak which was the first generation arf. It still has the nylon mount for the Cox reedies. The later ones I believe are like yours for beam mount. The plane flies terrific. I've had it for several years and flew it this past weekend actually. I wish I did have the beam mount as most of my engines are beam mounted nowadays. Ken

Ken, It is a Brodak ARC.  Also available as an ARF in beam mount form.

As long as we are doing Baby Clown show and tell.....

Also an ARC version.  I will be upgrading the power to a PAW .049 or .061 as it is a bit too heavy for the .035 and needs noseweight anyway.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Hi Joe, I'll post a picture of my ARF next week.  Its unique feature is that it's OK powered.

I applied the water slide decals I made the other day and learned a bit regarding what happens when you apply to little, or too much acrylic coating (Krylon UV resistant).  Apply too little and the color bleeds a bit.  Apply too much coating and the decal resists laying flat... wants to curl the edges.  I finally got it blotted flat and am reasonably happy with this initial attempt.  One of these days I will airbrush light coats of butyrate clear to finish the job.  That will be another learning experience HB~>

Fred,
Just to let you know, one of your tanks has made here to Korea and will be tested in the circles next year.  I think that this makes you even more internationally famous.

Thanks, Fred.  I look forward the getting the little jewels and posting a pic with the tank and engine mounted.  Baby Clown 2 is ready for the final prime coat on the fuse.

This ARF Baby Clown is a good flier even with an OK Cub.

Larry, Nice stealth Clown  y1 What gives with the pillow wing effect in the pic?  Is that a new hi zoot aerodynamic thing or a photography mirage?  Is the OK tricked out?

I am guessing that the reflection on the wing is house siding or clouds.  My camera is very low tech.

The Cub has been tweaked a little.  Mostly a good break-in similar to that of a Fox 35.  The case has two ports.  The cylinder is the glow head type so I used a Merlin with about five gaskets.  The crankshaft was given the Renger treatment of polishing the shaft and grinding the counterweight.   Usually I change the NVA or at least seal the stock NVA with fuel tubing.  This NVA seemed very linear and steady so I left it alone.

The fuel I use for flying is about 22% nitro, 23% castor, & 3% klotz.  Prop is MA 5.5-4.  RPM is 13500 which is very modest compared to Coxes but more than enough for a Baby Clown.

Fred,
It is the Foxberg racing tank that you made for Grace.  There is a 25 size racing event over here that I plan on using it in.  Unfortunately the fuel line bumps directly into the exhaust stack.  I will figure it out and bring glory to your design.  Watch for a report sometime next year...

John,

I can't claim the basic design, only the build.  That tank is an Edmund's "Reguflow" tank.  I found the design in a book from a UK author.

Does anyone know if an old McCoy .098 would be too much engine for the Baby Clown? I know they are for .049's but...

Thanks!

What kind of prop are you turning and what fuel/rpm?  Then we can give you an answer.  The engine has a really poor reputation, but I have no idea as to its actual performance.  I also don't know if it was poor design or lousy quality control.  With McCoy it could be either or both!  You may have lucked into a winner, who knows.

Give us some data, and we can give you guidance.   H^^

Larry,

No idea...I *might* buy one. The seller says it's in very good to excellent condition, and it looks almost brand new. It has a 7-6 Top Flite prop, and the seller says he runs Fox 5% Nitro/29% Castor fuel. No RPM data...

I've had a few suggestions, on another thread: Wee Duper Zilch, Ringmaster Flash, All american, etc.

Thanks!

I think the only plan I saw showing a McCoy .098 was Walt Hughes' Little Missle. It has a light airframe, swept wings and a single wheel LG mounted in the belly. For OTS, which requires a take off, you will need to extend the wheel (or wheels) to an acceptable position.
