The Stearman drawings are being shipped so it's time to start thinking about the next airplane. A s long as we are into the biplane mode, the Beechcraft D-17 Staggerwing was used as a military aircraft during WWII. Of course one could paint it up any way they like. Anybody interested in this one?? It will be a while before I start but it looks like a viable project.

Ok...the Staggerwing is of course one of my absolute faves in a biplane configuration.....another is the precursor to the I-16 Mosca, the I-14 (I-15?) biplane. And what about heading for Russia? Some very fine Russian ships out there that are rarely done, or rarely done in the .35 to .40 size. One I like for sure is the Yak-9 and the Lagg-5 come to mind.

Don, while in the biplane mode, gotta do a Curtis Hawk. I know there were a few of them but the one I'm thinking of is one of the later versions, in- line engine, talons on wheel pants etc...P-6 maybe?

THe Curtis Hawks & Boeings are all great as would a Grumman F3F - but may I also suggest.... Hawker Fury!

I must concurre...the F4B4 is an awesome plane and one I have always wanted to build. So I'm changing my vote to the F4B4 and the Staggerwing.

I have excellant source drawings for all the above airplanes, unfortunately, they do present some problems. They all have a very short nose moment and small lower wings with no ailerons(flaps). Mashing the engine, tank and belllcrank into these would be tricky! Plus a bunch of lead in the nose! They could be done with no flaps I suppose but my goal with the warbirds is to have a model you could fly in competition and have as good a shot at scoring well as the typical other profile models you see. Throw in the ooh aah factor and you have a winner! I can assure you that the SBD flies as well as any thing else I own. The Beech doesn't have these problems plus it is a very well liked airplane, ergo a lot of plans go out the door.

Give Mr Adamisin a cigar for pointing out the main reason I love the Beech choice. Can't hurt that the plane is a real looker too..

I'm going to stick my two cents in here, and say the Grumman TBF Avenger. This is a plane that has your name all over it. Only the Hutchinson man could pull off a ship like this.

I have considered the TBF myself. A good looking airplane to me. It is a mid wing airplane and could work out very nicely performance wise. Would have a long spindly landing gear but probably be OK. Not so sure about on grass though!
As for the Beech, I have to agree with Ty about the rudder, but I will do the project anyway. If you see one of my regular stunt ships, you will see I'm an old square rudder man myself. Mustang? Done too many times EXCEPT no one has done the "H". Maybe someday.

I'm fine with the idea of a Staggerwing, wonderful. Ty, I second your vote for the WACO UPF-7. Saw one cut up the sky, many a time, at airshows.

One of the nicest Beech stagerwing planes I have seen was once owned by the actor Clark Gable. I was a judge in the antique division at the Watsonville (CA) fly-in about 1990, so I got a real good look. I gave it high score, and it came out well up in final standings.

My own Focke-Wulf 44J biplane was awarded "pilot's choice" award (I didn't judge my own plane).

Of course there is WWI to consider....I think both the Fokker D7 and the SE5a would make great stunters. They have pretty good moments as is.

For the short nosed bipes just put on a Fox 59 for balast. They growl real nice with open exhaust. Perfect bipe engine. Ok; You could use one of those heavy 4-strokes.

Actually the P-6E had a long nose - inline Curtis engine. Landing gear was straight legs also, no cross braces etc. - a plus.
Probably the most well suited of all the military bipes of that era for modeling. One of the best looking as well IMO.
