Finally got going.
« on: October 29, 2012, 10:27:24 AM »
So, yesterday I finally got out in the shop and started drawing what I've been thinking about for the last couple of months. My first electrified plane. Pretty happy so far. Sort of combination of eras for me. It will be interesting, anyway. Should be light, too.

Keith,

I hope to start construction in a couple of weeks. I have to finish drawing the thing.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Tim,

Not yet. It's sort of a combination for my last ship, an idea I've had rattling around in my head for awhile and my Freelancer design along with some Heretic (and old design of mine - see my avatar) thrown in. Elliptical wing planform (sort of) and twin rudders with the airfoil and "numbers" from the Hooligan. Also some new stuff based on that rattling idea.

I should add that it's going to use a very different construction method than the standard layout. Again, a weird idea I've got.

Freelancer, Heretic,  Elliptical, twin rudders,  different construction.
I'm all in on this one, you selling plans yet ?    LOL

How about an open cockpit, that would make it complete for me. ~>

Allen,

Ah, you could, I guess. I may have a clear canopy that will work, but if not, it will be simulated. Sort of a low rider look again, but very different from the first one. Sorta.

I'm sure Dennis Adamission will like it.

Sort of and no pink. Sorry, Dennis.

Of course, as soon as I get going, stuff happens at work and I've been working late every night this week. I get off early tomorrow though and will be in the shop this weekend. Forecast is for rain with rain and rain all weekend so it's a great time to draw!!

OK, the plans are set. Just trying to figure out how I'm going to do things structurally. I've love to figure out a way to put the battery in without having to flip the plane over and I'm looking at a possible way to slide it in from the side without compromising the nose structure, but I have figured it all out yet. The wing and tailplane are interesting. Something I haven't done before. It's, ah, clever. Certainly it will be entertaining.

I really want to put big wheelpants on this plane too, but after my last encounter with them, I'm a bit nervous about it. It's going to be important to keep thing sucker light so I will probably build my cool looking wheelpants and a secondary gear with just skirts. I was shocked to see that I drew out a canopy (yes, real plastic) but thought I would probably have to do a simulated setup. Then, in rummaging through the canopies I have, found the perfect match. Go figure. I had also consider a fuse structure ala Al Rabe, but decided to go with fairly narrow fuse sides and molded top and bottom blocks.  I'm still thinking about wing structures but will use the tried and true Ted Fancher doctrine for the tailplane. Hope to have the plans done by the weekend and start building. I decided to put the classic plane I was finishing on hold and I'm pretty excited about this new beast.

No worries!  I did mine, so I don't have to do any more.  I DID put a pink anti cancer ribbon on the last airplane, probably will do that again too...

And battery way farther forward as well,,,,the electrajet was carrying the cg nearly an inch forward of the "glow"calculated position.of course if you built it light enough the extra four or five ounces of nose lead won't matter all that ,much right

Or modify Dick Sarpoulis's Hanriot Biche to be a bit more modern, and load the batteries through the nose cone.

After talking to Mark and Howard previously, the battery in this thing will have a LOT of maneuver area. But far back and far forward. It won't be a battery compartment so much as a battery cavern. I have some ideas about battery mounting that should work well. But I am bowing to the Great Paul and using a rear mount motor.

Semi-elliptical wing and tailplane. Sorta. The key is going to be making it light. About 650 square inches and near the 50oz mark. We'll see, I guess.

Get ready for a spider-plane.

OK, the plans still aren't quite done. I had to take some time out the a CAD program to figure a couple of things out. But I have that done and now can proceed. the nose will be interesting.

Hey Howard, I figured out a way to slide the battery both vertically and horizontally. I set it up with a pretty long nose to there will be quite a bit of range. I will depend on you to figure out an initial position.

These are done to maintain the original look. They are, after all, antiques.

I have the jigs set up and will probably start in a couple of days. I have to put a new facet in the bathroom and do a repair on the sink itself. Interesting process, that. About half done tonight (the chairs are drying). Finish that tomorrow night and I can get on the plane. Pictures to follow in the building thread.

Randy.  You mention rear-mounting the motor.  Everyone tells me it must be front-mounted!

I'm having an awful time trying to mount my AXI2824/12 from the front. Not much to tie the firewall to.  Now thinking about rear-mounting, and just let it tear itself loose in flight (that'as what glue is for)
