Brodak ARC P-40 bellcrank mount question...
« on: November 03, 2009, 05:46:52 PM »
I've got a Brodak ARC P-40 kit that I'm thinking seriously about bashing into something else. If so, it will be K&B .60 powered and probably end up right around 60 ounces. I'm wondering if the bellcrank and it's mounts are up to the job. Obviously I could cut it open and check it out, but if I could avoid that task it wouldn't really break my heart. However, I also know that to be able to sleep at night the right thing to do is to check it out anyway, which I will most likely end up doing if I pursue the project. Since this project is still one or two down on the list though, I would still like to see ahead of time if I could. As it is, you can't see anything good enough without cutting into it. Is there anyone out there who could possibly provide a photo or two of how they've got'er set up in there? ;D

When I bashed a P-40 into a Shoestring I posted how I replaced the leadouts with photos. No longer have or can't find the pictures and not sure if they are still on the forum (which ever one I posted them on) I'll see if I can find the thread.

Wow I found it, complete with photos.. Lots of good info from others on the P40 wing also.

I wouldn't worry about the bellcrank mount but would replace the leadouts.

 Bob,

Yep, replacing the leadouts is a given on any ARF/C in my opinion. That's whay I'll probably end up chopping into the wing anyway. I'm just curious how they've got this thing built inside strengthwise.

I've seen your Shoestring previously and you did an excellent job on it, the plane looks great and I'm sure it's a fine performer too. Believe it or not, the Shoestring was my first thought way back when I purchased my kit. It's kind of an obvious choice because of the wing outline. Just about the time I was thinking of starting in on mine though, yours popped up here "stealing" my idea! ;D :## Not being one to "copy", now I've had to think of something else and it's all your fault. :## I still don't know what kind of design yet though. I'm not opposed to knocking the tips off this thing for a different outline either. I did decide right away that the fixed portion of the flaps will be going away in place of full flaps which means that shape can change too.

Why not the P40-Q? Bubble canopy and much shallower cowl under the engine.

Cheers, Geoff

That one has been under consideration Geoff, thanks for the input. Only thing is there's no real options for an accurate paint scheme other than plain 'ol silver, and I'm partial to more of a detailed military scheme. There was a race version of that one but it was still just all aluminum with some race numbers on it. Who knows?

Here is a picture of my kit bashed P-40. It is now a P-39 Airacobra also John Tate’s kit bashed P-40 into a P-47 Thunderbolt.
Willis

The P-40 and the P-47 both have the wing raised a half inch the P-39 has the engine lowered a half inch.

 Willis,

I caught your P-39 a little while back, it's really cool. You've got me thinking now too. I've always wanted to do a "Tipsy Miss", John Sandbergs old P-63 Reno racer. Is there any chance I could see a shot of the underside to take a peek at the gear install? I'm curious about how you added the blocks in.

 Thanks!

The landing gear blocks are mounted 1/4 inch behind the spar.
