Which of these 1/2A engines is better stock?
« on: August 07, 2012, 10:03:26 PM »
I'm no engine guy but thought a little Speed would be fun, which of the .049's is a better runner for Proto, Fora or Profi? They are in stock here,

Thanks, Chris...

I just picked up the Fora 049 a week ago, and hope to start running it this weekend.

Profi's aren't in stock yet. Looks like a week or so out.

Doug Galbreath has a modified Picco engine that holds the 1/2 proto record similar pricing as others. Doug does a bunch of work to make it legal for 1/2 proto.

So far in the N.W....I've seen a few (most likely stock) Profi's & results have been around
80-85 mph proto.
The engine itself appears to need to rev very high. (perhaps 34-36,000 rpm) The biggest
setback to higher model speeds is the prop.  Props used so far (& I don't know the sizes)
rev like crazy but don't seem to go anywhere (faster than ~85mph).
But...for a stock engine they seem to run well enough...

I have yet to hear or see a Fora in 1/2A Protospeed. Maybe someone else has??

BTW, the C.S., G.Z, & Picco P-5 are not faster than this in stock condition. With proper
rework some can go a fair bit faster, but the question was "in stock condition".

Cheers, Paul

This is where experimenting comes into play with props.  Yes someone say use so & so prop.   But, I think in the old day we started with a high pitch prop and started reducing diameter until speed fell off.  Then we cut a new prop with the previous diameter to see if speed came back.  I mean 9-14 props on an old McCoy Redhead .60.   I have some old wood props in the shop with even higher  pitch.  The pitch on a prop is like gears in a car.   The lower the pitch the faster it accelerates, but no top speed.   The higher the pitch the longer it takes to get to top speed.

Hi Bill, Tom's email is tcstunts@verizon.net. This is a short kit, you will need to make your own engine mounts & LG.
