This is Harry Latshaw and Jerry McMillin circa 1954. Looks like a B ship, they built a lot of Joe Bunn designs in that area and time period. This was around Vincennes, Ind or Robinson, Ill where the "group" was Harry, Dad, Ted Black, Dave Cotton, and Bud Brown.

Well, then the server crashed and we're back here again. Dddang!

The first picture was taken at the '66 Internats in Burnaby, BC, at the BCIT parking lot. The captions on the pictures tell who's who. Ron Salo sent me this picture a few months before he died. We don't really know who took the picture, but maybe Barry Hobkirk or Partner. Dunno.

The second pic was me with my third B-Proto...ST .29rv. This was the first one that actually flew. The second one had great potential, but had an H&R torque unit and too big an elevator. Elevator fluttered and it went like a car until it ran out of fuel! Exciting! I was a skinny unit at that time...148 lbs when I got married in '67, and yep, I was flying a .65 speed model, too. I really liked B Proto. Tom Knoppi and I wrote the .21 Proto rules, but it was screwed up when made a 2 line only event. IMHO. We planned on adding a handicap to make them more equal, but that wasn't implimented. Sad...but maybe it's not too late????   S?P Steve

mono line did you say mono line?  mono line is so much easier to fly a speed model verses the two wire set up.  #^ #^ #^

So somebody put in a rulz change proposal to make .21 Proto legit for either 2-line or monoline, the way we had it originally!!!!!! I still have the wing and stabalizer/elevator. I can pry off the bellcrank mount and stick in an H&R unit, and I have a .21 half-pan that Tom gave me. True, I did sell the .21. But I can get another .21, right? Which one? I look at the Planet Hobby site from time to time, but never see any engines in stock. What up with that? Is this the same sort of crap that made me quit in the late '60's? Couldn't get either parts or engines in a timely manner...  R%%%% Steve

There's a couple of "How to Post Photos" threads in the Administration Forum (top of the list). Look for the one started by Rudy Taube...it seems to be of some help. If you still can't get it, send me a PM and I'll help as much as allowed. Some don't want to follow instructions, you see.... '' Steve

Steve, isn't that the main problem with  most of the competition events?  If you don't know someone or have access to the equipment, how do you get started?  1/2A Proto for my son back in '85 is what got me to join NASS.  It was simple and TeeDee's were easy to get.  DOC Holliday

Well, Doc...the thing is...I don't want to fly 2 line speed, or piped engines. I'd be willing to use a mini-pipe, even in "B". So .21 Proto was my hope, as I loved "B" Proto. But then somebody just had to screw up the rules and only allow 2 line. I've been looking at an OS Buggy "30" (5cc's) with a mini-pipe for B speed. Wouldn't it be nice if OS would at least offer the bolt-ons needed to make a speed engine out of a buggy engine? Has anybody asked OS?

It boils down to "D". And what "D" engines are available? My experience with Super Tigre and World Engines was what made me give up on flying speed in the late '60's. I went to F1A Nordic Glider, with no engines for 15 years, I was that PO'd. And messed about with F1B (too fiddley) and tried a little F1C (couldn't build fast enough). The only good engines at the time were Rossi 2.5's, and you couldn't get them from the importer, Bill McGraw. Yeah, I know why. And I know how they actually were obtained in this country. But it made me not too interested in Italian engines, unless someone can convince me that it's all better now!!! And no, I don't want to fly jet.

While I'm on a rant...Experts should NOT fly Beginner events. Leave them to the Beginners. Take them under your wing, help them learn, and encourage them. Whoa....the rant isn't over. We have some speed fliers in the Seattle area, and they're wondering where they can fly. They can fly at several sites that the NW Skyraiders have arranged, but they won't join the club, and the sites are only open to members and guests of members....not by our choice, but property owner's choice.  Do they call and ask if they can tag along? No. Why? It seems to me that they don't want to fly as badly as they claim. I don't get it, I really don't.  ??? Steve

My early days of F-40 flying....I still use the same engine type today!  Fortunately in this class, all subsequent rule changes have not obsoleted the basic airframe & performance has never been allowed to get out of hand. Always great FUN (even with vintage engines...) #^

Don Newburger, Reno Air Races 1971. He was consulting for Pylon-Air, operating the support team for Larry Havens' Bell P-63 Kingcobra. Speed? Unofficial 400 mph, best clocked speed was 369 mph for a 16 minute race that he placed 4th.

I can drag out some birds from the 50s and take modern pics of them.

2 "A"s ,1 "Cor D" and a proto.
The proto is fairly bad off.
All are from Dads design work using NACA data.

Have some nice engines that were in them and some that never had use.

Disclaimer!
All mistakes in following post are made by me! LL~

Not sure how to load more than 1-2 pics at a time. have not figured out how to caption for each so will post as much as possible of each in each post.It gona be allot of post!
Click pic and click again to enlarge.

The information is from Dad to the best of my memory.

Except as noted Dad's designs used NACA/NASA Info adjusted for Reynolds number.
The airfoil were set at the angle of attack that developed the best L/D ratio.
Wing area was based on weight and speed estimates.
Cowels were proper pressure cowl's, the math showed they added thrust.
All were set up with in thrust.

One of Dad first speed ships.
All that remains from early 1950s
Probably Fox.29X possibly K&B green head.
Do not know if this one was "properly designed".

 proto's from Harter kit?
Blue one was Moms from late 50s that in 79 I converted to rat with K&B S40.
Was lost when fuel shut off hung controls in full down.

The other one was Dads in late 50s and conversion to ST X,40 for rat was started and never finished in mid 70s.

Thought so Joey.

The first showing of the pipe had every one laughing until he had it whipped up on the pipe.
When he went 30mph(?) faster than existing record they quit laughing.

Pipes are probably why I avoided speed.
Do have one for my old Mac F1 kart 91A powered.
Easier to live with having driver adjustable slippy pipe.
When right that thing is scary fast. the 101 powered karts must have ben awesome.

That last post made 200 for me.

Now I know I win something for that.

I know how our airplanes feel.

Double D

Here is a few pictures of the car engine I told you about found in a box of engines I bought.
Have asked around a few of the old locals and no one has remembered anyone who ran a car.

McCoy .19
Is that the correct axle gear?
Was laying in the box.
Looking at MECOA site the bevel gear on crank looks correct.

Someone did a decent job of milling the fins or an excellent job with a file.
Are milled fins the norm for car engines?

Do you remember George Cleveland or Darrel Witherel ? Both from Alexandria and a little younger than you and Dad.

Thanks for a lot of history on this post/thread.  Nobody flew speed locally except at the NATS.  I was there when little Wayne Meriwether took first with McCoy .60 speed ship in Junior age division.   He was also NATS Junior Champion in 1964.  That was my first NATS and being away from home any length of time.  Seems like just yesterday.

The last pic, is that Joey and his Dad?
