Howdy all,

I'm planning on designing and scratchbuilding a sport model that will look a lot like the old speed ships, with the enclosed upright engine and streamlined fairing. I could really use some good photos to get the ideas flowing.

For now, I'll only offer one clue...a Veco .60 and a needlenose spinner will be involved.

Wayne,
This is a spped ship my grandfather built in the 60's. It is sized for a Veco 29R, but you could always build a larger one for a 60. The wing is solid balsa carved to an airfoil shape and fiberglassed.

Hey Warbird - didn't know you were into speed.
I have at least three planes from the late 50s/early 60s that I can photograph for you.
A Dizzy Bee with a Fox .29X, a Kansas Twister with a Super Tiger ball bearing .29 and a proto speed plane set up for a Dooling .29. The original engine is gone but I recently found a brand new one that I will break in and put in the proto.

The three planes will, of course, be converted to two-line.

I also came across a rat racer and two team racers, one is a George Moir Rambler.

I'll get some pictures on here soon.

Thanks Bob, I'm not a speed flyer, but I AM up to something.

I need to get a look at a bunch of the old style speed ships with the upright, enclosed engines for some reference and ideas in designing what will be a .60 powered ship.

Hi Joey,

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away (1968, New Jersey) I laid out an RC speed job for another builder with time on this hands. It penciled out at 300+ in a straight line, but the builder wisely chickened out and sold his two Dooling 61s.

Thought that the idea was resurfacing.

OK guys, I'll let ya in on this one. Many Stunt "gurus" may think it's stupid, but here's the deal...I don't care.

What I'm doing is designing a Stunt/Sport model that will "look" like one of the old speed ships, with the enclosed engine, straight, tapered, symmetrical wing, and minimal vertical fin/rudder. I don't think I'm even going to bother with flaps. It will have a 48" to 50" wingspan, with about a 1 3/4" airfoil, aluminum L/G and be powered with a very nice running Veco .60 I have sitting around. This model WILL motor! I already have the paint scheme figured out in my head and it's gonna be WAY cool. I am only planning on building this model to have FUN with, I'm not expecting to go kick Werwage's butt.

Now, any more pictures?

How about the Big Job. This one has an inverted engine (Fox 59). Looks good in the air.

Wish I had some video of the Big Job flying. Charlie Reeves flys the old time stunt pattern with the Big Job like it is on rails.

John...any idea where the plans for the "Big Job" came from? I wrote Tony N. and asked, "No". Then suggested they get it drawn up for PAMPA plans, but he didn't seem interested. Maybe it's been published in FM since then?

WWWarbird...what you're planning to build sounds an awful lot like a Hal deBolt "Stuntwagon 60". I think Hal used a Mac .60 and flew the pattern at around 100 mph, at least that's the legend. I will state, however, that sound (i.e., lots of it) will make a model seem faster than it really is. The reverse is also true.

I have actually seen deBolt fly his Stuntwagon with an Atwood Glo-Devil at 100 + mph. You have to realize at that time all the stunt people thought it was important to fly VERY fast. Also ex AMA pres John Grigg quite fast with a Hornet 60. In case my buddy Roger V. is reading this, he had one of the wind up handles on it and could really nail inverted flight.
