I caught Jim last night, but only because I was looking around too. I thought I'd just PM a couple friends to keep it on the down low.

Are those Veco thin wheels?

I get slightly annoyed with the lightweight foam wheels that are all one can get anymore. 

I am using wooden wheels from a baby ringmaster or similar, unless I can't balance then I have some foam on plastic light wheels to reduce nose weight.

If your referring to my post with the pictures of the wheels. They are not Veco rather they are Perfect brand wheels from the 50's and they are well formed to the hubs. aluminum gear are hand formed. Size of the wheels is about 1- 1/8 inch.

Speaking of "Proto," what does that mean? I know it's something specific about 1/2A speed. Is that the class of what we're building for our contest over at CEF?

Well, historically, "Proto" speed events normally refer to those speed events that are timed from a standing start.  I may be wrong about this but I think the first AMA proto speed event was Class B Proto Speed.  This evolved from the Class B Team Race event that had a minimum wing area and cross sectional dimensions as well as a canopy with a realistic pilot and a cowled in engine.  B Proto had the same wing area and required some form of a canopy, two wheels and of course limited to .29 engines.  Timed from a standing start for 14 laps on 60 foot lines which is a mile.  About the time that event was dying, Dale Kirn came up with a 1/2A Proto speed event, cowled in engine, minimum wing span area, had to have a canopy, two wheels, timed from a standing start on 42 foot lines for 1/2 mile.  Tht event has evoled to some of the rules being changed.  Many of the current "official" (whatever they are now) proto speed events and some of the sport speed events, some unofficial, have a standing start for the timing.

I made mine from a 1" bar of acetal I had. Simply trued it up on the lathe drilled centre for the axle, and parted off about 1/8".

Too easy if you have a lathe, if not find a friend with one OR look on the NASS site's parts finder
