Michael McMillin, Junior Scale builder
« on: September 11, 2007, 02:33:33 PM »
Here is a new Junior at work on his P-38M, Michael McMillin.

He is my youngest, 11 and working hard to make the Profile Multi-Engined 1/2A Scale meet at Tucson next month.

His ship has two Norvel .061 R/C engines and a JRoberts bellcrank.

He chose the particular model of Lightning. Makes it hard on the decal producer (me) as all of the stuff except the stars and bars have to be home made.

Michael has competed in one contest, all Stunt. This will be his first Scale meet, but he has built another Scale ship, a Sterling A-10 with Norvel .061 and JRoberts too.

Hope you guys enjoy the pictures.

Chris...

Hi Mark,
It is a P-38M Night Lightning. All black, with red numbers. Standard national insignia, at least.
We'll post some more pics as it goes along.
Thanks, he is a pretty happy boy.

Hey;
    We hope to see him at the Nats next year. There is a good group of juniors in the CL scale events at the Nats, and they need some new competition.

  Chris;

    I don't usually come in here but I'm sure glad I did today. That is outstanding workmanship for someone his age. Keep it up Michael, it gets much better from here.

I always like to see a young person building anything (especially a plane). When I was 3 years old I found a few wood shingle scraps and some used shingle nails. I nailed two of the shingles together and voilą I had a plane. I have been building things ever since and it has brought a lifetime of enjoyment. I know that all of you know what I mean, but there is a lot of people who don't. We are lucky.

Congratulations, young man that looks great. Trust me on this because I am almost 50 years older than you are.

I am very glad to see someone Michaels age using his hands, wonderful.  His subject is impressive as well, not your typical beginners scale subject.  Please keep posting pics on this.  I'm sure many of us are interested,  know I am.  Good Luck with it Michael. #^

Thanks guys,
I have driven to Phoenix during Michael's school week to have him overnight in the hotel to build. Luckily his homework was light and he was able to full assemble the ship and do a lot of shaping and some finish sanding.
I forgot my camera so I used my phone. I have not been able to download the pics off of the phone. Sorry. It's looking pretty good.
We are on are way to Bob Whitely's tomorrow AM to finish up the Night Lightning. It's getting close, only Thursday through Saturday to finish, paint and then test fly! Sunday is the big 1/2A Multi-engined Profile Scale contest.
I'll send pics later.

Hi Guys,
Michael flew the P-38 at the Tucson 1/2A Multi-Engined scale contest. Against some pretty hot competition he was 5th overall and Top Junior. He also was presented a, what else?, Sterling P-38 kit in addition to his plaque!

I test flew the model twice, first with APC 5.5x2.5's and the 1 3/4 spinners, but it would barely go and I had to whip it to keep it flying. The second flight was much better with cut down APC 5x3's and no spinners. The third flight was Michael's first, and his official. He cruised through it with his first throttled take off, and first power-on landing with throttles too. The only problems were the ones caused by dad's bad short tanking (the inboard quit first) and the topography of the circle. Details to follow in Flying Models.

I was busy as the mechanic, so pics are robbed from Rickii Pyatt and Jim Hoffman.

That smile says it all.  My plane and I flew it.  Great to hear he did well with it.  The plane looks great also.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday
