Fun Scale at the Nats
« on: January 27, 2009, 10:43:20 AM »
I am going to the 09 U-control scale Nats August 1-2 2009.  I have a sport scale model and a profile scale model to take.  What would be cheep - possibly an ARF fun scale to take?  It would give me 3rd flight opportunity while I am there anyway. Do fun scale tipically have throttles?

The competitive ones do. Note that the flight judging manual for the takeoff maneuver says that the model MUST remain at a stand still after it is released before the take off roll. When I ran C/L scale at the Nats we awarded zeros for models that did not comply with MUST. Without a throttle it is pretty hard to remain motionless. Realism in flight ought to get a serious downgrade too.

John;
You can camp on the grounds at AMA, with full hook up. The RV park is about 300 yards from the C/L scale area. They have shower and bath house. I don't know what the rates are, (R/C scale will take up many of the RV sites, so call now) you can call AMA 765 287 1256 and ask. Here are the hotels. They are about 15 minutes from AMA, call for rates. If Ball State University has something going on that weekend, you might be out of luck for a room. Hope this helps, see ya at the "Nats".
Blessings
Allen

There are two new motels also, Hampton Inn, and Comfort Inn, I don't know there numbers.

I just called the AMA.  They do have RV sites at $15 per night.  This includes electricity and water hookup but no sewer hookup.  They do have a dump station.  The only hitch is first come first serve.  However she said rarely did they run out of room.  All good stuff at $15 per night.  Motel is around $70 or so.  The big thing for me is being close to the flying site and being able to hang with the other fuel sniffers.

John, a lot of the C/L guys bring their wives and usually get together for dinner in town on Thursday and Friday night. NASA usually has a banquet Saturday night that many of us attend.

Mr Cain: In my efforts to do my best as a contest judge, I have dilligently read the rules and the judging guide. I have done my best to apply those rules as published. You will find the answers to your questions, as applied to C/L model contests, in those documents. I would also suggest you read the FAI F4B rules. They directly address your concerns about the lack of realism. If you would like to see different rules, the time is right to submit  rule change proposals. I did in the last cycle and two of them were accepted.

Feel free to take on the responsibility to again run an event subject to protests from the contestants. The help is deserately needed; a lot of good event directors and judges have dropped out because of the many forms of negativity displayed.

Oh, as you are well aware, technology has changed in the 37 years since 1972, and some folks have applied it to control line, even though others consider that a major transgression. Competition does seem to raise the bar.

To the Sheep Herder,
I have 20,000 hours and understand the rules of both R/C and C/L Scale. I'm sure it's not a detriment. Even with my 2600 time,( they have a nice exhaust color when using Auto Lean).
Cute about the kid and the Old Hat. I have found that many an Old Hat is pushing his own "white shirt and pants" halo effect for his buddies, so I'm not convinced the soloed 150 guy wasn't right. However, since the Old Hat was in the Ferry Command, he does have more credibility than any Jet Jock.
Nice response, Chuck.

Now Chris you have us wondering about what you are referring to.  There are some people that just can't be satisfied no matter what you do.  I have timed, judged, been an assistant ED and been an ED(event director) at local and national events.

The worst I felt was when I told a competitor they could not start their engine on the carrier deck.  A protest was filed, processed and upheld in favor of the ED.  Later when all was done the competitor apologized to me as it had been a long day with the way the NATS events are run now.  I apologized to them for being such a hard nose.  But, Leroy Cordes told me when I took on my first try at NATS Carrier being an event director.  He stated, "You have no friends in competition when you are the ED/CD.

He also didn't like it when I called time on him after he got to the deck and the two minutes was up.  I was the one that made the proposal that carrier time would be five minutes total from time called to deck to take off.

Doc,

My hat is off to anyone who will CD judge an event!!!   H^^  H^^  H^^

I am fairly new to U-control scale.  This summer will be my second stab at it.  NO BODY and I mean no body should get mad at a judge who is working FREE and is making it possible for the rest of us to compete.  My advise to all is if you don't like the judging fix it by becoming one.  As for me I plan to read the rules. If I don't understand something ask questions on this BB before I build.  Spend what time and money I can afford on the hobby.  Go to a few contest with no expectations except finding a good stake at the local restaurant.  That way. if I manage to get in an official flight I will be on top of the world.  To me, I treat scale competion like it was fly in. I see a lot of good flying. I get to fly myself and life is GOOD!!!!  Of course it I every win I will probably turn into an grumpy old fart who hates the rules and the CD. LOL!  LL~  LL~  LL~.

Any way, thanks DOC for all of you effort to allow the rest of US to have fun withought getting of of our lazy rear ends!!    H^^  H^^  H^^  H^^  H^^  H^^
