A Ki-45 for 1/2A scale
« on: May 28, 2012, 08:18:54 PM »
When I heard that Brodak’s would have 1/2a scale, I knew I wanted to fly, but didn’t have a plane. Luckily a few years back I had started a Kawasaki Ki-45 twin, WWII, Japanese fighter. It was planned with throttles for two AP .061’s, which of course can’t be used for this event.

It was never finished because the electric bug bit me and I wandered away from glow motors. Time constraints to build being minimal I decided to finish it as my entry. To save time the finish is Coverite Microlight. I am not sure how this will work on a glow plane; I hope it will be OK.

I have a good color 3 view for reference. I have found that Testors paint for lexan car bodies sticks quite well to iron on coverings, and it is reasonably fuel proof.

 Neat stuff! y1

What are you going to use instead of the .061's then?

I will use the AP .061's. According to the rules this is OK; "Engine size shall not exceed .061 c.i., or 1 cc, per engine."

P.S The rules are posted on the Brodak site under fly-in, The rule that seems hard is this one
"The landing will be accomplished with at least one engine not running." Especially if you don't have more than one engine.!!!

Might want to cover up that pushrod exit a little, looks like an oil catcher. ;D

Yes the hole is a bit large, it has since been closed. It was the result of a different mistake where I needed to do a little operation.  Haste does make waste I guess.

That seems to just be a normal part of scratchbuilding, trying to minimize the number of "fixed mistakes". ;D :##

Flight tests are done. The Ki flies very well, even with only the outboard or inboard running. lands well also. the gear have been moved forward of the scale position since our clubs field is mostly grass with a concrete take off pad. No problems with grass landing, None of that typical 1/2A flipping. Setting the engines rich and they both run for the flight duration. The AP's have about an hour on them and they are still tight.

off to Brodak's tomorrow

It worked.

Won first place.

The only successful multi-engine 1/2A at The Brodak.

Actually, Bob's B-17 flew well, for some reason the judges didn't give him enough static points to get in the top three.
I enjoyed the event and not just because I was 1st. I have been going to smaller models for a few yers now and I am already planning a new 1/2A for next year.
