Who is or was Byron Bednar?
« on: June 11, 2014, 06:23:56 PM »
      Hi All:

On my workbench, I have a hand written letter signed by a chap whom I met in the late 70's  His name is/was Byron Bednar.

Who was he and he must have been in CL in the N.J. area at this time.  I think that he flew combat and perhaps other CL events.

Is he  alive and does he still participate in CL events?

                                                                                                                           Tia,

                                                                                                                           Frank

Yes, he is alive and well and living in FL. Byron was a man with orthopedic disabilities that lived in Baltimore. He would take weeks preparing and recovering for racing contests he would drive to in NJ. He was a great mentor and friend and I consider him to be one of the best competitors to ever step onto a control line racing circle. I wish him well.

     Hi Walt:

     Thanks for the reply.

I too had a favorable recollection of B.B. I must have as I have hung on to his letter for about 30 years.

I thought that he may have been from the N.J. area as that is where I would see him at contests.

There used to be many CL people from the Baltimore area as I can recall attending contests in the DC and MD areas.  Names like Russ Sandusky, Jerry Cramer and another chap who I can not remember his name.  This chap wa a large fellow with a Goatee and had a Phd. in TV Communications.  Heck we even had a contest at the town dump in Rockville, Md and used to fly at the Anacosta NAS in DC.  Those seemed to be the Golden Era of CL in this area,

Oh yes, there were also many contests in NJ. Names like Edison, Mainville, Millvale etc. come to mind.  of course one can not forget "Butcher" Bill Staubach who ran combat contests in the NJ area in those days.

One disclaimer is in order.  I may be wrong on the names and places, but there was a lot of CL activity in this area in those days.  It must be the meds! Lol

                                                                                                                      Stay well,

                                                                                                                      Frank McCune
