LA 25 Racing at the T&D, June 5, 2010

The scheduled nine events of the T&D were reduced to three due to high wind on Saturday and heavy rain and water on the field Sunday. Makeup dates and venues are under discussion.

The events that were flown were LA25 Race, Profile Scale, and Jim Walker Event.

LA25 Sport Race - Qualifying, 70 laps with one pit stop.

Steve Stefanovic, flown by Peter Hanson, 3:59.9
Paul Smith, pitted by Pat MacKenzie, 4:28.97
Brad LaPointe, flown by Stewart Henderson, 4:29.88
Chris Brownhill, pitted by John Easton, 4:31.62
Dan Birks, flown by Lenny Bourel, 4:33.35
Lenny Bourel, pitted by Dan Birks, 5:49.59

As you can see, there was a razor-thin cutoff to make the final three, with some generally "good enough" times not making the cut. Due to high wind, I elected to fly my own plane and recruit a mechanic, quite a departure from my usual postion over the past couple decades. But Pat MacKenzie was great choice for a mechanic and he got us into the final.

In the three-up final, all of us were crowded into the downwind quadrant, the only place you could take off. Steve had the front pit, Brad the back, and my team in the middle. By timing my pits so Steve was on the ground and Brad was in the air, I was able to negotiate the three pit stops without incident..

Surprisingly, everybody got through all five qualifiers and the final without any dustups, a real achievement in that wind.

Final, 140 laps with three pit stops.

1st, Steve Stefanovic, 9:26.31
2nd Brad LaPointe, 9:34.56
3rd, Paul Smith, 10:13.17

Steve is the unquestioned king of racing in Toronto and the District. He's invariably the fastest, and with the exception of the occasional crash or malfunction he always wins.

Nobody put any pressure on him in the 70's, but Brad was hot on his tail in 10-miler.

That is what racing is all about.  It is so much fun when you find out two planes are on the same lap.  I mean we had one flip starts and almost identical pit stops.  He  got me by a quarter lap.  H^^
