ID Australian Team Racer?
« on: January 13, 2011, 10:01:35 AM »
I spotted this team racer (I think Vintage or Classic) in Australian Control Line News, February 2010. Anybody know what it is?

At least in the photo, the fuselage shape looks a little unusual which a plus in my book.
I built a Blue Pants as a kid. Wish I still had it. Might even learn to fly it.

On another forum, someone was guessing "Tiger Terror", a Vintage A design. Maybe...

... finding out isn't all that important to me but I get curious when I see something that looks nice.

Hello, the model is a Classic B team racer designed and built by Dennis Prior in Queensland Australia and successfully campaigned by Mark McDermott (also based in Queensland).

It is powered by a Tim Gillot modified OS25FP engine.

Dennis is a superb craftsman  and does have an eye for beautiful models .. not sure if a plan is available... it is a Russian 'flavoured' design...

PM me for a few more pics if you wish.

Paul

Thanks!

Mark McDermott's name let me find another picture of the model at:

Do you know if the design has a name?

I also found a few other very nice planes that he has used. The white "Rocket" for example.

Could you post a picture or two for all to see?

That reminds me...

I just saw a post, elsewhere, by 1971 F2C European Champion Pentti Nore, saying that people did not used to build racers from plans. Who wants to fly something that someone else designed anyway :D ... you'd just start building and made it up as you went.

Maybe you made a plan afterwards, maybe not.

--------------------
I've been watching some old-timer free flight discussions and got the impression that a plan is not - or did not used to be - for duplicating what the designer did: it is a general idea, and the builder should work out the details on his own.

Yes you are correct although most team racing racing classes have rules which require minimum heights, wing areas, cross sections etc.

Another Aussie just pointed out to me that there's a couple of more pictures of the yellow plane on that site, at

Categories >Team Race > Classic B > Models

There's other pretty pictures there too...

I think Tiger Terror was an absolute minimalist vintage A racer from the Brit. South Bristol Club.
Ian Russell.
[I can remember the schedule o.k., the problem is remembering what was the last manoeuvre I just flew!].
