Clayton Smith, who posted the pictures of those beautiful Scale racing planes, and I have been incorrespondence about this event. 

I have plans for the "Profile" class of two different planes.  I am going to build one (or both) and see how they fly.  Maybe some new interest will come in for these events.

In the "Profile" Class (as well as th efull fuselage class, I *think*), an OS 40FP is required, and the plane must have been a racer prior to WW II.  Clayton has the rules, and I hope he posts them here, soon.

HI Bill. Clayton sent me a set of the rules. I'll see if I can forward them to you or else just mail them. I have  a set of plans for a Gee Bee, big fat yellow and black bumble bee. Should be fun to race.  **) #^

Clayton also sent me the rules.  I am looking into building a Profile of the Wedell Williams that Mike Garmon drew.  He also drew a profile Gee Bee.

Wonder if the OS 40FP stipulation should still be there?  They are easy to find, but OOP.

Not only that, but I'll bet 99% of them have been modified for CLPA, not stock for racing. LA .40 instead??  Available, less expensive and the darn blue can be hidden under a cowling.  **)

I agree, the LA .40 would be a much better choice than the FP, since it's currently in production. As for the ugly blue case, the LA is available in the correct (err... natural) finish as an RC, the carb can be EBay'd for enough money to pay for a venturi and NVA.

Hang on to that carb and needle valve assembly.  The ones I sold didn't even pay for  the one venturi for control line I got from Tower.   DOC Holliday

Photos of profile Golden Age Racing Planes.  White plane is the Howard "Pete".  Green plane is the Granville Bros QED.  Profiles use a OS40FP Spec Engine.

The profile models follow the same 36" minimum wing span requirement as the full fuselage racing models.  Raced as a separate class.

Attached is a photo of some of the Air Racers at one of the Huntersville NC Contest a few years back. Several of the models were laid out using the scale outline  three views , enlarged  to meet rule requirements    . All had the same 36 inch wingspan rule .    Lots of fun .

Hey Bill, Clayton, and Wil,  Since we haven't had a great deal of success with Foxburg Racing at our two contests in Huntersville, how about adding this event. If you "have and event" don't worry about trophies or awards. I just want to fly a race, have some fun, get a little adrenaline flowing and get all sweaty and out of breath running around in a circle. There has got to be more to C/L than flying the same stunt pattern time and time again.

Golden Age racing as an event. Right now the rules seem to be in limbo with a very basic criteria and this is a good thing.
But could someone be a little more specific. As I understand the rules for this event are.

1. Aircraft form the Golden Age of Racing.
2. 36" minimum wingspan minimun chord thickness ?
3. Profile fuselage.
4. Motor of .40 displacement. Any motor ?
5. Aircraft must be scale in appearance.
6. Fuel, AMA standard mix ?
7. Appearance points

How about line size I am guessing 60' .018 diameter stranded.
Races 70 laps heats and 140 lap finals
Pitstops ?
Tank size ?
Fuel shutoff ? Safety issue ?
Minimum 3 up racing ?

Please note I am not trying to complicate this event just understand the rules.

During that time the pilot must be crouching or sitting inside the centre circle. He keeps one hand on the ground and his handle and his lines as close to the ground as defined by the F2C panel of judges until the model aircraft starts again.

Hi Scott,

There are two classes for this event: Profile and full fuselage.  Clayton Smith has the original rules (as I amsure Chuck does, too).  We will see what happens during the next couple of meetings of the MCLS as to whether or not we can add this event.  We have had it in the past!  Foxberg has not done well recently here, and our club Pres. is pondering the idea.

Originally, the Profiles were limited to box stock FP 40s.  This will probably need revisiting since they are long OOP.  Maybe the LA 40 instead (or as well), still "box stock".

Don't know about the "Full fuselage" event.  I would probably like that as well, if not better, but it is a "time investment" in a SCALE built up plane that could hinder this class.

Will keep everyone posted.

            I have a set of the large Mike Garmon  Wendel Williams racer plans if anyone needs one.  It is close
    to 60" span so would have to scale down to size.   I hope to have one of these in the air before the end of

Here are some more photos of the Howard Pete profile model and the full fuselage model.  These Golden Age Racers are flown two or three up much like rat racers using 40 engines on 60 foot lines.  No pit stops however just a flat out race.

I used old Cleveland Models three-view drawing that I rescaled on a copy machine and then fabricated parts to match the three-view.  I built it before the excellent October 1999 AMA Model Aviation plan was published.

The October 1999 Model Aviation article and excellent plans would be the thing to use now.  They are a bargain from AMA.  Or go to the AMA Website Archive ( need to be AMA Member) for October 1999 article.  Excellent article and you could print pages having plan and resize on copy machine.  All you really need for a profile build are the three views and just build it as you would any profile model.

The Wedell Williams 44 that you have already have access to plans is nice plane. but the paint job is a challenge.

Roger ---  I thought you were at our meet last year --  it's on 6n just east of Albion, Pa.
The number is 10,000 on the mailbox --  after you go through Albion you will start up a long
grade and we are the second house on the left side.  The field is in back- the meeting is at 1:00
but flying will start at 10:00 AM.

  Come to the first exit in Pa. ---   West Springfield/Cherry Hill    and exit - turn right on 6n

   Go through Albion on 6n -  on the east side you will go up a long grade

   there is a Taxidermy shop at the top and we are the next place on the north side

   Brown brick & stone house - flying in the rear......
