Mike has done a great service to all of us, even those only semi-interested in Racing. The video he put on YouTube of the final for Sport Goodyear in Dallas is a must-see. It shows a tremendous amount of detail that might otherwise go un-noticed. Pitting, footwork, passing, shutting down, taking off, it's all there. Watch carefully the position of the pitman and flyers as they observe the safety stripes on the Racing surface.
The planes being flown are "Sport Goodyears", .15 powered, mostly ASP or Magnums, easily obtained. Most importantly, note how easy they are to start when hot.....right out of the box. Very few Fox .15s could ever do this.
The planes are not overly complex to build and operate. They all go about the same speed, not too fast for more "mature" pilots to handle, about 85 mph. Speed is regulated by fuel (10% nitro), line size (.015 cable) and venturi size. If speeds get too high, the rules are modified to keep them manageable. The goal of Sport Goodyear Racing is to have the best race possible, as evidenced by the warm handshakes all around when that happens, as it did at this contest.
Thanks Mike Greb!
